On October 7, 2013 Julia and I presented a Student-Research-In-Progress poster of some preliminary data at the national meeting of The Wildlife Society in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We placed second in the undergraduate research category. The poster was entitled “Nest attendance patterns in sharp-tailed grouse in western North Dakota.” Our three main objectives were to determine if there were any apparent differences in the number of recess events per day, the duration of the recess events, and the time of day at which the recess events occurred between five Belden and 12 Blaisdell hens from the 2012 field season. Hens on both sites generally took recesses around dawn (between 6:00 and 9:00) and dusk (between 17:00 and 20:00). We found that Blaisdell hens took slightly shorter recesses compared to Belden hens. We also found that the Blaisdell hens took more recesses per day than the Belden hens. This second recess event was typically taken during the early evening. In the future we plan to extend these results to all hens over both field seasons.
