WD combined a 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD into a single unit designed for laptops/notebooks. You're probably thinking what i was thinking - that this has been done before, nothing special. But it is special. This is not yet another hybrid drive where the SSD part caches commonly used data. It's not a hybrid drive at all, but a true full SSD and a full HDD in a single 9.5mm unit. As for speed, it doesn't out-perform a plain SSD, but no plain SSD will get you over 1TB of storage either, especially for only $300.

The WD Black2 Dual Drive gets my Editor's Choice for innovation taken to the extreme. It took some serious work to properly execute the combination of these storage technologies into a small and mobile package, and WD has pulled it off very well indeed.
