If one had a Ati 6870 card - where would he put it??

How are the power consumptions on these things?

IIRC, that's the equivalent of a 5770, so that would probably be best on DNETC. Collatz should work too, but not sure how well.

Power should be less than the 5xxx series equivalent, though I'm not sure how much...

I read somewhere that the 6870 does is about 10% faster than the 5770 and requires less power. Its hard to get good stats because the boinc client is the one that reports the gpu type to the server and even the latest boinc clients report any of the 6xxx cards as unknown.

According to Wikipedia: Comparison of AMD graphics processing units (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units)
Power Consumption:
5770 Max TDP = 108W
6870 Max TDP = 151W

Also the 5770 uses 1W less at idle.

Processing Power:
5770 GFLOPS = 1360
6870 GFLOPS = 2016 (48% better than the 5770)

Thks for those numbers! Really helpful!

I'm a little late on jumping in on this discussion, but here goes. You should be aware that the 68XX series do not support double precision, so you'd be very limited on what ATI projects you could run. The 69XX's do have double precision. If ATI followed their old pattern, then the 68XX's would be DP, but for some reason that changed. My pair of 6970's crossfired are doing MW's in about 65 seconds, whereas my 5870's were doing them in about 81 seconds. The 6970's run hot and you need to keep your fan speeds around 60% in CCC.

a comparison between the 5870 and 6970 is a more accurate comparison, since the 6970 is actually the new 5870, not 5770.

5870:
188W
2720 SP GFLOPS
544 DP GFLOPS

6970:
250W
2703 SP GFLOPS
675 DP GFLOPS

That's a 24% increase in DP performance, while SP is less then 1% slower.
So if you get a 69xx card, please put it on something that uses DP :)

EDIT: and i just noticed this info had nothing to do with the original question lol
*sigh*
