View Full Version : The LGA 1156 here to stay? 1155 & 1366 Dead? AMD Bulldozer too little too late?

Was looking over these Intel chips.

LGA 1155 Lynnfield/Clarksdale
LGA 1366 Bloomfield/Gulftown
LGA 1156 Sandy Bridge

With the release of Sandy Bridge, Is it the end of the line for the 1155 and 1366? When looking to build a new system is the LGA 1156 the way to go or is the 1156 the replacement for the 1155 and Intel plans a replacement for the 1366 (1367?)

AMD's Bulldozer looks like a March/April (Which is about my time line for a new system) release. Even if it does not exceed the Mid/high Intel processors it should start a price war which will benefit us all.

What do you think?

What do you think?

I think it's a sad day for EVGA since their Super Record 2 was built around the dual 1366 CPU's.

On the other hand as you say, this could start some prices wars that will drive the very expensive 1366 hex core CPU's down into the everyone can afford one range.

Moore's Law states that technology doubles every 18 to 24 months... I'm starting to think it's every 6 months.

The core I7-990X is still due out at the end of Feb on the 1366 platform (3.47GHz, 6 cores) which will drive the price down for the other hex cores on it's own. And possibly a 995x too, but i can't find anything definite on that one. After that....yeah seems to be pretty much the end of the line for 1366.

The only 1155s i can find with more than 2 cores that haven't been released yet are labeled as 'server processors' and will come out about a week before the i7-990x. So it appears for the time being, and for quite awhile, we'll get more performance by sticking with 1366 until 1155 catches up.

(socket 1155 replaces 1156, btw. you had it backwards)

as for replacing socket 1366, that'll be socket 2011 (socket R) expected out in Q3 this year and will support 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes and 4 memory channels.

And yeah, i really expected AMD's bulldozer to have been released at some point during my absence but they're still dragging their feet. sad. hopefully they're price it accordingly since it'll be a slow performer compared to other offerings from Intel by the time they get around to it.
