View Full Version : Powering on help!
I found a old computer of mine it is a hp. I can't get it to turn on I thought that the power button may be bad so I cut the wires going to it and jumped them off still nothing. I took a paper clip and put it in the green wire and a black wire on the power supply and the power supply comes on. Any suggestions on how to get this thing powered up?
I also installed a new mother board to see that would fix it and nothing.

Can you short the 2 pins on the motherboard the power switch plugs into with any luck?
tried shorting them with no luck. I read that the cpu could be bad so I found one on ebay for 5.00 to see it that fix's it.
replaced cpu. Any one have any ideas? It has 2.5 volt going to one of the pins on the MB that the power switch hooks up to. I have tried shorting it out, using another switch. I have tried new ram. The power supply test with I jump it with a paper clip unhooked from the MB. It just won't power on when connected to the MB. Please help!!
I'm no expert on anything but, I have several power supplies that will not power up a mb because the 5v leg is out. Some mb will run without the 5v leg but some will not. a PS tester will let you test all legs of the PS and if the 5v is out then that is probably the problem.

Chances are that if it an HP, it probably came with a 250-300W power supply. They usually didn't put in any more than they needed. So, replacing it with a cheap 400W or 500W PSU (~$20-30 on sale) would probably do the trick. If you care to give some specs, chances are people have some parts they could donate to beef it up a little.
I had a problem with an older box when I added a new card to it. It would power up and run but would shut down in a short time. It took me a while but figured out the PS was getting hot and shutting down. A larger PS fixed it.
Im gonna run to best buy and pick a power supply up. Ill keep yall updated.
So now it powers one but then does nothing! This is going to be fun I see..
after reseating everything 3 times it is on and working! yay! thanks for everyone's help!
