In the past i did a little bit of distributed computing including F@H. But that was prior to BOINC and the integration of all the projects. Anyways I thought I could put some idle CPU and GPU time to use. I don't have a dedicated folding/crunching rig yet but I might have to build one some day. In the mean time I need to get caught up on all the technologies and methodology.

Right now I have an intel i5-3570k which has its own HD 4000 gpu that I currently do not use, I use a gtx 560 (non-ti) for my gpu. Is it possible to use the on die gpu as well as my discrete gpu to crunch at the same time? I know little about the HD 4000 graphics, I've never used it. Thank you for our time and if someone could please point me to where I could get this kind of info in the future.

Welcome!

Yep, I have a machine that is crunching on the GPU card, and also on the HD 4000.

Check out our BOINC FAQ. Here is a link there for the Intel HD graphics, under GPU crunching, and how to get it to crunch. Also the projects that have apps for it.

I'll give some more details to help with responses.

The computer:

CPU: i5-3570k mildly overclocked, never touched on board graphics
MEM: 8gb DDR3, could probably use some tweaking
GPU: gtx-560 GPU: 850mhz (336 cores), mem 1gb @ 2052mhz of GDDR5 on 256bit BUS (TDP 150w?)
MOBO: Asus sabertooth z77
Storage: Primary/OS 100gb sata3 SSD and 1TB 7200rpm HD.
Temperatures: CPU cores range from ~48-55C and GPU at ~70C on current tasks.

At the moment my boinc projects are seti and wuprop both on team SETI.USA When I was just doing the SETI project my computer would run 5 tasks at once, 4 on the CPU and 1 on the GPU "Running (.0584 CPUs + 1 Nvidia gpu)". Now that I've added WUProp i have a 6th task running but it says "Running (non-cpu intensive). Just mentioning this for reference.

I want to see what this machine can do but I'm also not looking at increasing my power bill too much. I can see my current CPU package draws ~60w according to Open Hardware Monitor which is a pleasant surprise. I know my GPU will put that number to shame, though. As you can tell i like hardware and I think it'd be cool to do some good with this geek affliction but unfortunately my affliction currently has a small budget and I would like to make as much do with what I got. Thank you for your time.

Collatz for the GPU.

Collatz for the GPU.

Ditto. Collatz will run great on your HD 4000. Einstein and Seti will also run, if you prefer astronomy to math, but for less credits.

Welcome to the team! :)

In the future, you can ask questions under either http://www.setiusa.us/forumdisplay.php?163-Hardware-Tech-Discussion, or the specific project you are crunching - or thinking about crunching.

BTW, BOINC FAQ is at http://www.setiusa.us/faq.php?faq=boinc_crunching_faq. If you don't understand something, just ask.

D'oh! Forgot to put in the link. Thanks for catching that.

here's a screen shot of my current tasks.

AFAIK still not using on die GPU.
BOINC manager version: 7.2.39(x64)
The onlything in the bios i can find (z77 chipset BTW) was an option to use dual monitors 1 from HD4000 and the other from discrete. I turned that option on but don't see any differences (not performance but no new devices). While in windows i never see anything regarding another display adapter besides my gtx 560, no matter where I look.

In project preferences: currently I think i have all projects in their default states of what and where to run except collatz, i think i turned off the cpu applications, i didn't know any better but I wanted to get this rig going before i spent 18hrs on 1 task...

If you guys want me to snap more screenshots just say where to point the camera. Ty for your time!

Welcome and glad to have you here (sorry I can't answer the tech questions).
