View Full Version : Laziness or Necessity?

Any way PMs could be increased to 2500 and uploaded images to 256kB? or at least 192kB?

Fire$torm

I'll check on increasing upload size but the inbox count? You'll just have to start downloading your messages... :P

Look for the following at the bottom of your inbox page

Download all Private Messages as:
XML | CSV | Text

I use the text version when I feel the need to save something.

This is a storage issue, right? Is Bok out of room? If so, can I help resolve that?

John P. Myers
02-28-14, 12:13 AM
Lol 99% of the time when i search my inbox i'm looking for a link someone referenced which is easy to see because of the color difference from the rest of the text. Downloading it just converts it all to text and i can't find anything anymore :p Not every link contains the phrase "http", "www." or ".com" either, so can't search that. But fine, we'll justchalk this one to laziness :p

As for the upload size, it's really killing me. I thought 128kB was the limit. I was trying to upload an image of Precision X for EmSti of OC settings on my Titan this time. The PNG was 393kB. Changed it to JPG and dropped it to 129kB. Removed a piece of it to get it down to 127kB, tried to upload and yet again fail. I've lost count of how many posts turn out incorrectly or that i just gave up on due to this low limit.

I'm with Z. I have no problem making another donation if that gets this problem solved.

I'm at about 70% capacity on the drives in the webserver right now, so I will need to increase that in the coming months.

I have no problem increasing these limits though. I've changed PM's to be 5000. As for attachments, it should only be limited by the php settings (which are 2Mb) - unless I'm missing some limit in vBulletin. Will look again.

EDIT - oops, logged in as admin to change the settings and accidently posted as admin too - Bok

On the upload thing....

You don't need to use the server's storage for any of that. Use DropBox (5GBs to start), Copy.com (15GBs to start), Sync.com, Google Drive, etc... These solutions only require you to launch the respective app, drag the image to it's special folder and then right-click the image to grab it's URL.

Be Bok friendly and save Bok's servers....!!!!!

Be Bok friendly and save Bok's servers....!!!!!I'm aware of dropbox, etc. But the issue comes into play when you start factoring in the additional load time caused by referencing stuff on external servers. Surely you've viewed one of duke's post with multiple images and sat there drumming your fingers on your desk waiting for it to load...or just clicked "Back" before it finishes :p Some people have turned off the ability to view people's signatures for this reason as well to reduce loading time. I've done that in the past myself when i had a slower connection. I have 30Mb/s now, but many people don't and the additional wait times for them are very noticeable, as in annoying and frustrating. Plus dropbox, etc. is just another account i need to keep up with and another additional step that has to be taken just to post an image. It sounds like laziness, but it's not. It's the hatred i have towards doing things the hard way when i (we) shouldn't have to.

Oh sorry. I never experience load lag unless one of the sig image servers is having fits.

Oh btw, try using Notepad++ (Link (http://notepad-plus-plus.org/)) to read your DL'd as text messages. NP++ has a great set of search features including bookmaking lines. You can then just look through the doc for the bookmarks or use Menu > Search > Bookmark to copy/cut/delete bookmarked lines. I almost never use M$ notepad/wordpad thx to NP++

The one thing that doesn't happen, though Bok may not care, is that users almost never ever clean out their store of attachments. I mean does everyone need to keep things from like 3 years ago? That is why I avoid using the forum server for image or file hosting. IMHO it's a waste of his storage space.

John P. Myers
03-03-14, 07:56 PM
So i just tried the Dropbox thing. It would be great if it worked. It does not because the image i'm trying to display is 1024 pixels wide. So here's yet another post i cannot make.

Can you still not upload larger images? As far as i can tell the settings should allow for 2Mb (the php limit right now). I'll try to debug it as best I can if you can give me some more info on exactly what you try?

John P. Myers
03-03-14, 08:14 PM
I didn't even try to upload it at first. Just an external image link. Reduced it to 684x576 @ 151kB and i still cannot make the post, neither by uploading or referencing externally.

Edit: Looking back through all attachments i've ever made, the largest by dimension that was successful was larger than the one i'm complaining about this time :p However the largest by file size i've ever attached successfully was only 81kB.

Question: For DropBox did you place the image in the "Public Folder" ?

Right. There is no limit to any dropbox file other than total file size, not to exceed 2gb for the whole (free) account.

Right. There is no limit to any dropbox file other than total file size, not to exceed 2gb for the whole (free) account.
The problem isn't Dropbox. My image links work perfectly fine on Facebook, Skype and Hangouts. But not here.

Hmmmm... Okay I've reset your forum status. your account was set to registered user and Team Member. This has caused problems for others so I reset it. Try posting a large pic now. If it still doesn't work, please PM me a screenshot of the error message you get.

JPM, try FF in safe mode ---> Win Start Button > Run > c:\<wherever-FF-folder-is-located>\firefox.exe --safe-mode
Then log into test account and try again.

Other things to look at: Firewall and Anti-Virus rules for your browsers.

Okay this is weird...

Using test account on IE8 the posted images begin to draw out but then disappear.

I've had this happen on Firefox many times. I've attached images, clicked Preview and the images shows up as expected. Click submit and the image(s) are suddenly replaced with links. For example: http://www.setiusa.us/showthread.php?6148-Cooler-Master-Glacer-240L-CPU-Water-Cooler&p=69506&viewfull=1#post69506 and this one with 2 images: http://www.setiusa.us/showthread.php?6148-Cooler-Master-Glacer-240L-CPU-Water-Cooler&p=69839&viewfull=1#post69839

That's under 100kB of course. Over 100kB i get nothing.

Correct. But only sometimes. And this occurs when using the "Insert Image" tool button.
Edit: The images those links link to are all in my attachments list.

Re-edit: If you goto those posts and click "Reply with quote" you'll see they are in fact listed as attachments in the message code, but only show up as links.

Re-re-edit: I'm in ff safemode right now. Just tried to attach a 151kB file and nothing. No errors, just nothing.

Okay, when using DropBox you have to place images into C:\Dropbox\Public\some-image-dot-jpg

For Dropbox, non-public links only take you to DropBox's on-line folder view.

Edit:

Okay, when using DropBox you have to place images into C:\Dropbox\Public\some-image-dot-jpg

For Dropbox HTTPS only takes you to DropBox's on-line folder view.

I'll look into that, but it still doesn't explain the inability to attach an image straight from my hard drive (without dropbox involved in any way) or to reference an external image, dropbox or not.

Ok. Checked things and as i said earlier Dropbox is not the problem. My settings were fine which was evident since the Dropbox link worked elsewhere. See how the image is showing up now? I used the link from your uploaded version to display it, but there's a catch: for whatever reason, your version of the file is smaller - only 77kB, whereas the original (the one i'm trying to post) is 151kB. I'm trying to tell you i cannot upload/attach/link to anything over 100kB, using my hard drive, dropbox or any other site anywhere at all.

Fire$torm

Yipeeee!

So something in the 2500K's software is broken. Possibilities include Windows, FireFox, Anti-Virus or Firewall. At least those are the ones that come to mind.

Edit: I doubt it's hardware related..... hmmmm

2nd Edit: Missed the 154K failed part. Damnit. Router maybe?

John P. Myers
03-04-14, 09:13 PM
Could be router i guess? Would be strange since i never adjust anything away from default that i recall. It can't be anti-virus because i'm not using any and it can't be firefox because chrome failed too. I doubt it's the firewall but i'll have another look. Windows is a possibility. I can't think of a single piece of hardware in the 2500K box that's the same brand as in the 3770K box, except the CPU and they're different models, so i doubt it's a hardware issue as well.

Edit: oh wait the power supplies are the same brand, but different models. Not that they'd have any effect on my ability to upload an image :p

Btw i don't guess i need to be admin anymore. It may be freaking people out who aren't following this thread lol

Yeah, You having a similar problem on the 2nd box says it's an external issue. The only other possibility would be your ISP. Big Brother is nesting at JPM's house...???? >:)
