ok guys I need you professional help :) and I know there is a lot of it here. I have an old xeon server that is getting slow. I'm wondering if it is worth keeping or not. I would like to upgrade the cpu's if that would be wroth while. The MB is a SuperMicro model X7DAL Serial # 0123456789. (cool serial number) It has 2 xeon 5120 @1.86 CPU's. CPU code names is Model 15, Stepping 6 ( just what it told me) Socket LGA771. The other problem I see is that it only has 3 gig of ram and I'm not sure how much more I could put in that MB. I would like to upgrade the CPU's to at least quads or more if possible. Your thoughts please.

You could actually speed that thing up a ton. It'll support 24GB RAM (1.8V only) DDR2 667MHz. ECC of course. It might've come with 533MHz RAM. Might want to toss that if it did. It's also capable of quad channel memory. Not sure if you're able to take advantage of that with 3GB, but maybe. Best part is you can upgrade to a pair of quad core 5400 series xeons. Many, many times faster than what you've got.

Edit: Best CPU it will support is the X5460 quad core @ 3.16GHz

Ouch. FB-DIMMs. That's a bit more unusual. It looks like the Mobo has 6 DIMM slots. Is your 3 Gig using all 6 slots? Or only 4?

I have two quad-core Xeon E5405 CPUs you can have - maybe a couple of sticks of FB-DIMM ram too. PM me if you're interested-
