I am giving away my 1st 8 core cruncher. It's a 1st gen Mac Pro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_Pro#First_generation_.28tower.29). It's been a rock solid daily driver, and then 24/7 cruncher.
The catch: You have to pay shipping. It's heavy, so you are probably looking at ~$75. And you have to agree to use it to crunch for the team, not just sell it off for profit.
Specs:
MacPro2,1 w/ Optional dual 3.0 GHz Quad-core Xeon "Clovertown" (X5365). Each CPU is 4 cores, no HT, Core2 based.
20gb*: 4x 4gb FB-DIMMs + 4x 1gb FB-DIMMs
2x 1.5tb HDs
GPU: Radeon X1900 XT that came with it. Works fine, but does not crunch, currently sitting on a shelf.
GPU: 8800 GT, the fastest crunching GPU that will work with this model, without doing unsupported hacks. It is that weird, mutant, better-than-a-true-8800 GT card I have posted about in the past (http://www.setiusa.us/showthread.php?5211-My-quot-8800-GT-quot-s&highlight=8800).
OS: OSX 10.6.8, AKA snow leopard.**
*When booting, it sometimes shows 20gb, sometimes 16gb. So either one of the 4gb FB-DIMMs is flakey, or one of the slots is flakey. I have never taken the time to diagnose the root-cause.
**Wikipedia says the highest version of OSX officially supported is 10.7, AKA Lion. But I don't have a Lion installation DVD to upgrade it. I think you can get one for $20. On the wiki page linked above, there is a way to get it all the way up to Mavericks if you want. Never tried that myself.
