View Full Version : Project Kooler- H220 as the Gateway Drug to Open Loop Cooling

Hey gang,

From the title I guess you know what's coming. Satisfying my penchant to document things. The title also serves as a warning...!!! Yep, the open loop cooling bug has bitten hard over here.

For the newer additions to the forums, this is one of my favorite things to do. Bringing ideas to life. And those that know me will realize that this the most ambitious project/mod I have ever documented. I hope this will inspire others to give open loop cooling a try. At least I hope this thread has a positive influence, along with a positive ending.... :P

This won't be a very detailed build log so you won't have to worry about a tone of pics. But if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to post. I'll answer any question as well as I can.

So like okay, in the beginning there was Void. Oh wait, wrong group for that....

You might be asking why bother going the custom cooling route? Why not just buy an AIO solution like the Corsair H-100 and be done with it? The answer is simple, I've never been really satisfied with the performance of Asetek wares. Asetek is the OEM of most of the AIO kits out there. Yeah, they do work, just not as well as I think they should. Also, I've had an H-50 that went bad. It's cold plate (the cooper base that contacts the CPU) warp after 14 months of use. And I've had a H-100 that was defective out of the box. The H-100's fan controller committed Seppuku in the first 30 seconds of use, taking my prized pair of Akasa Viper 140's along for the ride. That was the last Asetek product I will ever buy. Shortly after that fiasco, Swiftech introduced the H220. Although it wasn't the first, the H220 is an AIO that can be expanded. Meaning you can add additional components to the cooling loop. The primary reason I went the Swiftech route was it's better cooling performance compared to Asetek fare and it runs much quieter then any of the H's I have owned.

To be honest, I never thought I'd ever go open loop as it can put a big strain on the ol' checkbook. Yet, after two months of researching, planning, saving up & selling stuff on eBay, here I am posting away on my first attempt at it. Hence the title of this thread. Okay enough with boring you, time for a few pics.

So here is all the crap, err I mean hardware that I need to do this.

Misc: Monsoon G 1/4 Stop Plug/LED fitting -Orange w/Orange LED
Compression Fittings: Monsoon Free Center 3/8" ID x 5/8" OD - Orange ( x1 6-Pack + x2 singles)

The System

MB: EVGA X58 FTW3 (Hot X58 chipset - 1 big reason to go open loop)
CPU: Core i7 920
CPU Cooler: Swiftech H220
RAM: (x6) 2GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600 - Black
PSU: Corsair TX850M
GPU: 5870 (From another system)
SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 120GB
HDD: 5 units (500~1,000GB) totaling 3.25TB
Case: Cooler Master Cosmos II
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST

Of course no project of mine is, well, is a project unless I mod something!

I needed a away to mount the Phobya rez as I didn't like the mounting clamps that came with it. So while trolling the Net for ideas, I happened upon a solution by Koolance (Link (http://koolance.com/bkt-tk140f-reservoir-bracket-140mm-60mm-od)). Sweet mounting idea. So how did I make mine? Simple, I used the top cover of an old Bestec PSU I had in my junk box. And after hours of drawing up, laying out, Dremeling, drilling, more Dremeling, filing and sanding......

One naked bottom mount rez bracket...

It cleaned up really well......
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3595745/Project%20Kooler/Bracket_Finished-Small.jpg

The project "To-Do" list looks something like this:
*Uninstall all partz'es in my case.
*Drain and flush H220. 1st flush: 10% Vinegar / 90% Distilled Water. 2nd flush: 5% Vinegar / 95% Distilled Water. 3rd flush: Straight Distilled.
*Flush new rad, rez, GPU & NB blocks, tubing.
*Fix 3-Pin fan Header on MB. Pulled loose when I forgot about side mounted case fan while removing case side panel (Duh...!!! that was stupid....)
*Thorough cleaning of Cosmos II case, inside and out.
*Begin installing the new bits. :D

Okay folks, it's time to get started. So I won't be on much for the next day or so. And of course my credit output will have a corresponding drop.

Thanks for reading through all this. See ya when I see ya.

F$, I can't decide if I'm more jealous that you're building a sweeter rig than mine . . . or if I'm more jealous that you have the TIME to do this project!!! :)) ;) Awesome start, looks like you've got everything covered so will be looking forward to the updates and pics along the way! :)

Thx Jed.

Well last night and much of today was kinda a waste. Didn't get nearly as far along as I had hoped. Had a major migraine headache going. So I was moving a lot slower then I normally could. Crashed at my desk just before noon. Emerged from REM around 3:30pm. But the migraine was gone so the dream time was worth it. Anyhoot, a few pics to show that I am making progress.

Bad news.

Pump failed due to my sheer stupidity. This project is currently on hold.

Friends are priceless

New combo water block/pump has been ordered. Decided on the Swiftech Apogee Drive II for two reasons. A combo unit requires less plumbing (same as the H220) and the pump is replaceable just in case I ever get stupid again. Package should arrive Monday~Tuesday.

:-bd love it! I have 2 Swiftech Apogee XTs not currently in use, but they don't have pumps on them like this one. Just a plain CPU block. They were the best in the world when i got them. Glad to see Swiftech continues to make things better and more convenient. That heatsink on the pump is a nice added touch!

Quick update.

The Swiftech ADII is a beast for it's size. :-bd

More Mods Coming
Have to redesign the rez bracket. I had to change the rez's location.
Need to drill a ~5/8" hole in the top of the case to access the rad's fillport.

The good news
Finalized the pluming layout. Cooling loop works well.
GPU temps with water block (Moowrap): 30C - Load@99%, CoreClock@925Mhz, MEMClock@1150Mhz

The Bad News
5870 is failing. Getting dancing pixels on the screen which usually means one or more VRAM chips are going bad. Oh well...

Will post again after I finish troubleshooting the GPU.

So I'm pretty sure I know what went wrong. In a word, epoxy. To be precise, Arctic Silver Premium Silver Thermal Adhesive. That is what I used to attach heatsinks to the VRAMs and Vregs. Apparently when I removed them from the VRAM chips, one or more of the chips packaging (the outer plastic that forms a chips shape) top portion had separated from the VRAM wafers inside. So in this condition, there is no material to conduct away the heat generated by the wafer(s).

The possibility of this never occurred to me. But it is the only explanation that fits the symptoms. Another lesson learned. To be honest, when I originally installed the aftermarket air cooler on that card, I had no intention of ever removing those heatsinks, hence my choice of TIM. Oh well...

Next update will be a ways off.

Thanks for following along.

Hey now! I've got some 5850's that are idle due to Litecoin difficulty issues. PM' me ok?

Thanks for the offer but I have a line on a 5870. Need to clear out some debt before I can get my grubby little hands on it.

Edit: Oh and I forgot to mention that I did a little shuffling of GPUs so in the not too distant future I'll have this computer running sans a water cooled GPU.

Update.

yesterday I finally got around to setting up a temporary solution for mounting the rez. Decided to scrap my original idea for mounting the rez. :((

For the upper bracket I gutted an old CD_ROM and modded it. Used my original upper bracket mount for the lower clamp. Finished the plumbing, filled the loop with distilled water from the rad's fill port and bled out most of the air bubbles.

I still have a minor issue with the CPU water block not making full contact. It's a clearance thing with one of the electrolytic caps that are too close to the CPU. But I'll save this problem for another day.

Anyhoot here are two pics. First is the almost original layout with the GPU water block. And plz ignore the rez miming the Leaning Tower of Pisa. No upper bracket for the rez.... Second pic is the current setup.

So, for now you've taken the GPU out of the loop?

Just curious, when you have both connected, which way does the water-flow go? CPU or GPU first?

From what I've read, it really does not matter. The coolant flow is too fast to negatively impact component temps. But to answer your question, the original plan was: Swiftech Rad > CPU > Northbridge > 120mm Rad > GPU > Rez > Swiftech Rad.

Update:

HOT DANG! It worked!

Reflow of my HD 5870. Crunching Collatz as Is I type this :D Absolutely no sign of pixelation.

So what did I do?

Took everything off the card that would come off. I preheated the oven to 385F and baked the card for 9 minutes.

Everything was fine until I tried gaming in World of Tanks a couple of hours ago. At first the GUI would just minimize to the Desktop. On the third restart of WoT the pixelation started up again. Guess this puppy is just not happy being fixed. So I tossed it into Dark Matter, my cruncher, not the Cosmic stuff. I'll run it until it breaks completely. At least this way I don't have to look at it.....

So no JPM, I'm still on track for your card.

The funny thing is, it is still running. And as far as I can tell, crunching wise it will do so for some time to come. It is odd that it functions well while crunching (high load) but fails at gaming (moderate load).
