View Full Version : my budget crunching pc build

after pricing some stuff up this is what i went with

brand new amd fx 8320 135$'s
the mobo was supposed to be a asrock 880gmh
http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/880GMHU3S3/?cat=CPU
but i accidently ordered an asrock 880gm 42$'s
http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/880GM-LE%20FX/?cat=CPU

the 8320 isnt officially supported by this board but apprently it works with this board ill know for sure when it arrives on tuesday
in the event it doesnt work im going to buy an http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/980DE3U3S3/ for 62$'s or i may spend a lil more and go for a mobo with multiple pcie x16 slots

corsair liquid cpu cooler new ebay 39$'s
antec 750w psu 109$'s

the rest of the parts were basically free since i had them laying around
i.e atx case, drives, burners etc and already have 6gb of ram

the plan is to fill the pci slots with 2 zotac gt430 i already have and stick a ati hd 7790 in the pcie slot , i still need to purchase an hd 7790
the mobo i ordered also has hd4250 onboard so i may be able to get that crunching as well
the fx8320 will be pushed to just over 4.0ghz

should be a nice upgrade over my amd a8-3800 pc or my other p4 2.8ghz machines

if i end up not using the first mobo i ordered i will prolly buy an fx 8120 and build a second cruncher out of it

if u guys have any suggestions on different mobo's incase the first one comes in and my cpu wont work with it or videocards im all ears ,
the reason i chose those asrock boards are because they had ide controllers which cut back on my cost for optical drives

Ouch. You could have had an eVGA 750W PS for less, with a 10 year warranty and 80Plus Gold certified. :)

FourOh first brought it up here in this thread:

http://www.setiusa.us/showthread.php?5124-Collatz-PSU-Discussion/page2

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438017

And there was a $25 rebate on it until today... But still about your same price without it, and up until this Rebate started, it had a $20 rebate before that. So it'll probably come up on rebate again by the time you know you want it. Just keep an eye on it. EVGA is a good brand for GPU's, so I'll guess having a 10 year warranty implies they have faith in their PS line as well. :)

So, you have your license key but not the install disk? If so, I can help. I can upload an ISO image of Win7 Ult x64 to Copy[dot]com and PM the link to you. It will probably take some time for you to DL the image. If your interested let me know.

Microsoft has gotten a bit freer about those DVD images. Last I looked, Microsoft hosts their own image downloads. About 2 months ago I grabbed Win7 Pro from them directly at least. Simple Google search should steer you to it if needed.

dave c
06-16-14, 10:20 PM
something has to be wrong , ive got all 8 cores running now at a stable 54*c , but in order to do it i had to drop the cpu to 3.1ghz and drop voltage slightly
im about to pull the coller off my a8 cpu and see if it will fit and if it makes a difference

Just something to note. It is possible that the pre-applied thermal paste needed to settle a bit. Also, most companies that make coolers for CPUs and GPUs with pre-applied TIM, tend to apply too much of the stuff. Because of this, and because many of the pre-applied TIMs are of inferior quality, I always remove it, clean the cold plate with 90% isopropyl alcohol and apply my favorite Arctic Silver 5 TIM.

B4 you do that...
*Did you enable the audio chip in BIOS -->> BIOS Menu > Advanced <<--? Looking at the user manual - page 46 (ftp://66.226.78.21/manual/880GM-LE%20FX.pdf) for that MB, it looks like HDMI Audio is disabled by default.

Onboard HDMI HD Audio [Disabled]

*Have you updated the audio device driver(s) (http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/880GM-LE%20FX/?cat=Download)?

yes i did , ive tried even disabling the front jack since i dont have one , the volume control says there is music playing via the green level indicator in windows 7 but no matter what jack i plug into i get no sound.
windows/realtek even pop up a notice when i change jacks , and windows media player will stop playing the song if unplug all the jacks

even downloaded the driver from asrocks site and tried that, windows update also says its the most current driver

the gigabyte board is nice tons of room for gpu power , just wish it had more then a single pci slot , and as a bonus it also supports the amd fx9xxx if i ever decide to upgrade when the price comes down on those, if i get that board i can no longer call this a budget build though

Hmmm, I'm at a loss as to the problem. Sorry.

my boss wants the board i currently have so ill give it to him and stick an fx6300 or fx8120 in it.
so now im currently looking for a new mobo , if i give up wanting 6 pcie slots , i can get a board with 4pciex16 2 pci and 2pcie x1's for about half the cost

im deffinatly open to suggestions for mobos at this point , deffinatly want one of the better boards for stable ocing though , id be thrilled if i could get something that would be stable at 5.2-5.4ghz

Wouldn't we all! :D

i got close with this one 4.8ghz is stable 4.9-5.0ghz starts to crash after a few hours i need to bump the voltage more but cant on this board without risk of frying it , supposedly the 990fx boards will go pretty dang far and stay stable

funyn thing is my a8 machine is easier to oc , its stock speed is 2.7ghz and its been stable as a rock at 3.6ghz clock with a 4ghz boost @ stock voltage

You might find something worthy in that price range but...

I have found that under a certain price point, for full tower cases, lots of little corners get skipped by manufactures. Things like properly deburring the cut/stampted edges of sheet metal, which will lead to very nasty cuts on hands and arms. Not healthy either. Other things include incomplete or total lack of small hardware, misaligned screw holes, shoddy paint, etc...

Your $60~$70 mark is almost in the ballpark.

There still may be hope. Stores like Microcenter (if you have one near you) will once in a while low ball the price on their "Open Box Display Units" due to missing parts, scratches, dings, etc. Of course you have to visit them at the right time which is almost never announced. Anyhoot, this may be a way to find a good deal on a full tower case.

i think im going to hold off until i can get it , my current case is working fine for now , i think im going to lap the fx8320 and see if i can get it to run slightly cooler , did a few practice runs on some t6400 core duos since its been a while ( ill post up some pics later) im going to delid one of the core duos and compare it to one that is lapped only and see how much difference there is .

Dave, you might want to reconsider delidding any Intel CPU prior to Ivy Bridge. Before Ivy, all Intel CPUs had their IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader) soldered to to cores. Trying to delid such a CPU will result in destroying the cores.

As to the Air 540, It's a very interesting case. Enjoy.

the lid on the 6400 shouldnt be soldered , atleast from what i have read, i can see the glue all the way around it,if it does turn out to be soldered its no big deal, i have a stack of these cpus and only 1 machine that can run them.thats why i practiced lapping on those first before i grabbed my fx cpu. i know the lid is soldered to my fx for sure

edit

that girl is hotttttttttttt

lapped the fx today( and the heatsink) , actually just a few mins ago and got the box back up and running , between lapping and using artic silver 5 its running about 5*c cooler then before hell the fan hasnt even gone into high speed mode yet , still on the stock amd cooler. ill give it a few hours and then fire up the last 2 cores with work and see what it does. going to see if i can get the core duo machines back up and running as well later tonight

no thats all done from lapping i went all the way up to 3600 grit , took a long time but i was bored and needed something to do

on a side note it barley helped on my fx machine between the lapping and arctic silver 5 im still running at 48*c with it over clocked and running wot , prolly going to switch up to some water cooling
