How well will this crunch?

I don't know exact numbers, but it will do DNETC and Collatz decently well, and probably PG as well. It will NOT do MW.

Like Maxwell said, it's not double-precision so it won't do Milkyway.

I tend to look at GFLOPS myself, I know there are other factor to how fast the cards are but if you simply go by GFLOPS you get this breakdown:

6870 - 2016 GFLOPS for $235
5870 - 2720 GFLOPS for $235
5850 - 2088 GFLOPS for $200 range.

In my mind the 6xxx series cards are unproven. I have read how great they will be when certain project apps are available... a bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush.

If you are dead set on the 6xxx series cards, I would at least get the 6950 since it is double-precision.

Just my 2 cents. :)

100% agreement with STM.

If you must have a 6xxx series now, it should be a 6950. Double precision, and you can soft-mod (bios) into a FULL 6970 with a simple click of a mouse. That will equal a 5870 for crunching, but will NOT beat it yet. That is a "maybe" depending on how the new code for the new architecture is written.

Now, a 5850 can be O/Ced and bios modded to same voltage as 5870 safely and easily, because they are the same exact card. 5850 just has some shaders disabled, so after it's tricked out, it will get within 8 to 10% of the 5870 for less money.

So...most bang for the buck? 5850 and next a 5870.
