Bios Update Asus Help

I am trying to update a Asus 95vd2-mx bios because a added a newer cpu that is not supported with my current bios. I have downloaded the asus bios install tool with windows and it will not work. I have held alt + f2 with the new bios on a cd in the drive and it will not work. I have searched the net and found nothing that works. Please can someone help me out! This is driving me crazy!

Hey aux9o,

You need to perform a BIOS flash from floppy or USB stick. Never from Windows. I'll dig around for the proper tool, just hope you have a spare USB stick laying around.

Btw, are you sure the model number is 95vd2-mx and not 5vd2-mx?

Can't find anything with 95vd2-mx.

Okay the 5vd2-mx MB has a built-in utility called Asus EZ Flash utility

First: DL the latest BIOS file. I assume you have already done that.

Instructions (Remember: For your use, Floppy Disk = USB Stick)

2.1.3 ASUS EZ Flash utility

The ASUS EZ Flash feature allows you to update the BIOS without having to
go through the long process of booting from a floppy disk and using a
DOS-based utility. The EZ Flash utility is built-in the BIOS chip so it is
accessible by pressing <Alt> + <F2> during the Power-On Self Tests
(POST).

To update the BIOS using EZ Flash:
1. Visit the ASUS website (www.asus.com) to download the latest BIOS
file for the motherboard.
2. Save the BIOS file to a floppy disk, then restart the system.
3. Press <Alt> + <F2> during POST to display the following.

Insert Disk then press Enter or ESC to continue POST




4. Insert the floppy disk
that contains the BIOS
file to the floppy disk
drive then press
<Enter>. The following
screen appears.

Edit #2: Forgot to mention that you must format your USB Stick to FAT32 not NTFS. The CMOS BIOS Utility cannot read NTFS.

My ASUS P9X79 PRO will update the BIOS from Windows.

I just updated mine since you guys reminded me that I wanted to do that.

One thing to be aware of is that when you update your BIOS it will delete any saved OC setups. So before doing it you should save them to a flash drive first. Then after you install the new BIOS you can load the settings from the drive without having to go through and manually tweak everything.

Okay aux9o, glad you got it working.

@Brian: Not to be an ass but I cannot emphasize strongly enough that updating BIOS from Windows is a really bad idea. Not because it doesn't work but rather that Windows is too friggin unstable. As in buggie. If you peruse any of the MB manufacturer's forums, you will find tons of complaints from people who have bricked your MB trying to update BIOS from Windows. The convenience of Windows is not worth the risk.

@Brian: Not to be an ass but I cannot emphasize strongly enough that updating BIOS from Windows is a really bad idea. Not because it doesn't work but rather that Windows is too friggin unstable. As in buggie. If you peruse any of the MB manufacturer's forums, you will find tons of complaints from people who have bricked your MB trying to update BIOS from Windows. The convenience of Windows is not worth the risk.
Two things:

1. First, this is why I love this team - someone has an issue they're struggling to solve, and different people come together to offer suggestions. I credit at least 70-80% of my computer knowledge to things I've learned, at least in part, from team members and the forums.

2. I tend to agree with F$ - I just pseudo-bricked an HP laptop trying to do a BIOS update from Windows. The install hung, made no progress for 24 hours, and was completely bricked after a reboot. As it turns out, the motherboard was dying anyway, so it was only a short matter of time before the thing needed to be replaced, but this sped up the process. (It also means that I was able to replace the AMD quad with an i7. Woohoo!)

Don't know, I updated 6 machines last night without a problem.

I also have have never had an issue updating a bios via a Windows utility, but it wouldn't surprise me if I did at some point.
