View Full Version : My House is Trying to Kill Me

Wife and I are renting a duplex until we can afford to buy a house. There are a lot of things we like about the place (fenced in yard for the dogs, fairly quiet cul-de-sac, close to work, etc.) and some things we don't. One of the problems being that a majority of the outlets in this stupid place either don't work or are looser than my mom (there's the "your mom" joke, folks) so that nothing you plug in to the outlet actually stays plugged in. I've slowly been swapping out the outlets as I have time.

Well, today, in an effort to be nice to my wife, I was trying to change the outlet in her bathroom. I did my due diligence and figured out that her bathroom is on the Master bedroom circuit, so I shut that off to change the outlet. Apparently, the complete and total f***tard who wired this place put the lights and fan on the master bedroom circuit, and the lone outlet (merely 6 inches away, mind you) on the spare bedroom circuit. I only found this out after attempting to electrocute myself changing the outlet.

Not only am I super pissed that my house is trying to kill me, but I now have to shut down the computers to change that damned outlet. I guess I can take this opportunity to move some GPUs around like I've been meaning to do...

A $4.00 outlet tester is always a grand idea before any work like that. Light from the outlet? Try the breaker panel again! :))

If he zaps himself good enough he will actually locate which breaker it's on at the same time =)) It makes it easier than flipping them one at a time :D

As it turns out, this stupid outlet is on it's own circuit. I cannot find a single other thing in the house that is controlled by the breaker I had to trip to change it out.

I mean, in our breaker box, this outlet is controlled by the breaker labeled "GFI". Of course, I find this weird, because this "GFI" circuit does not actually control any of the GFI outlets we have in this entire place. Whoever wired this house deserves a nice huge kick to the junk.

It's always good to put GFI (a.k.a. GFCI - whatever) outlets in bathrooms and kitchens (but more importantly bathrooms) because of steam. Might keep you from getting re-zapped some day :p

Is it a GFCI breaker? Unlikely, but if it is then any recep on that circuit is GFI protected.
