Ok I would love some more info on these but I don't want the "losing a laptop" hijacked from it. If no ones noticed its a OCD thing. Mostly because in 2 years from now when someone wants to find data on something they won't have to read 100 useless comments wha'll trying to solve an issue.

Ok now that that is out, What remote programs dose the team use? maybe we can find a "best" for future users? Please Post what you use and what you Do/ or Don't like about it?

I'm a TeamViewer (http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx) fan myself. I'm able to use it to control machines remotely, I can VPN in to run proxy server software, and my computers work. And I'm able to talk my grandmother through using it, so it's easy...

To reiterate I use UltraVNC. (http://uvnc.com/) Dynamic IP addressing is not a concern of mine since all my systems are on my local network. I have used TEamViewer but it was a hassle to use as it kept timing out while I was servicing my sister's Toshiba Laptop.

For the sake of completeness since I mentioned the free DynDns service, I will go through the process of creating an account with them and test it. I will report the results in a day or two.

I use Teamviewer to take care of my kids computers since it is easier then trying to explain how to fix a problem. Take over there confuser and fix it myself.

Same here. Ultravnc and fixed IPs.

I wrote an article for one of the last Team Newsletters. From work I use Putty to connect to my Linux computers by ssh.

Besides that, "Select Computer" from the boinc manager of a working GUI.

LogMeIn (www.logmein.com (http://www.logmein.com))

Web based. No conflict with GPOU crunching. Free version supports multiple PCs so unless you need remote file copy, the free version is all you need.

I've been using RealVNC. I don't have any problems with it but it does take a little router port configuration if you want to go WAN with it, otherwise it's not been a problem.
Works well for me.

While looking for Remote Desktop software, I found that Windows 7 has something called Remote Desktop Connection. Is this safe to use over the internet? Are there better solutions such as those mentioned in this thread? It's either remote control or turn the boxes off for a couple of weeks.

I don't know about the one in Win 7 but with Team Viewer you don't have to install it. There is a run option that you can use and it then gives you the option of running it or installing. You will then be given you IP and a code that you have to give to whoever you are connecting to, I like this program just for theose reasons. Very easy to use as well and it gives you the option to upload or download item if you want to or need to.

+1

I've been using this for 6 months now and love it.

GPU BOINC crunching does not get along we'll with the built in windows app. Avoid.

Any VNC will do fine. I use ultravnc.

Do you use ultraVNC alone or as an add-on to NeoRouter?

Just by itself.

Windows Remote Desktop just took out one of my best GPU rigs. I won't be able to get to it for another week due to my traveling! Logmein is not an option for me due to firewall restrictions. I suppose if remotely install VNC then I might be able to log in through that and restart BOINC.

I want to get this sorted out a couple of days before the DiRT challenge, because that will take all my gpu rigs.

I use UltraVNC (Link (http://www.uvnc.com/)) to manages my boxes remotely but it can be a hassle trying to install using another remote program. I would suggest TeamViewer (Link (http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx)) instead. Uses port 80 (HTTP) for communication so your firewall won't be an issue.

I run my machines remotely for 6 to 8 months a year (we go south for the winter) and I use TeamViewer. I've never had a problem with it.

What I do is install BoincTasks on 1 computer (the main one I tie into remotely) and control the other machines from that 1 machine. You can not start/stop BOINC (except on the host) but you can do ALL other BOINC control on the other machines from BoincTasks.

Likewise on TeamViewer. I log into my main computer by phone and can control them all with BoincTasks.

Boinctasks sounds intriguing. I'm going to have to check that out.

Ditto on the TeamViewer suggestion. Another, albeit more complicated, solution is to use OpenVPN over TCP port 80. You would then have full access to your LAN remotely.

I had forgotten that you can configure the com port within UltraVNC.... duh

Guess TeamViewer is getting a lot of votes. May have to check that one out. For non-private uses I've relied on RAdmin with great success for over a decade. I call it the most cost effective piece of software I've ever bought at a company level.

As of the end of this month, LogMeIn will no longer be free. Prices will start at $49 for two computers. I guess it is time to switch back to Team Viewer.

I can't understand how to use Team Viewer minimized as LogMein. I also tried Google Chrome desktop remote control and I managed to add two machines (Win 7 ones) but failed for one machine with Windows 8.

I still use UltraVNC (Link (http://www.uvnc.com/)) as it will always be free.

I need a solution until LogMein turns off the service. Tomorrow I will try this one out. Thank you.
