WCG: Team performance and personal badge graphics
Ever wonder how we are doing in WCG as a team, beyond just total points? Here you go!: http://www.seti-germany.de/wcg/team_...eam=6FG4T4VRP1
Also, want to put your badges in your sig? Here you go!: http://www.seti-germany.de/wcg/show_...cture_bild.php
Thanks to our distinguished competition at SETI.Germany for this!

My humble contribution. These are from a long time ago...too long.

Since badges are based on run time, not #of calculations, it actually behooves you to put older/slower computers on WCG...

I was just about to ask about this in the forum. :)

Which reminds me, I have a slow P4 that could be used on this to get me the rest of the way to 50k.

I personally don't like this type of basis as it doesn't take into account work done. There is no point in putting a faster pc on this project.
On the other hand, we can take advantage of this with respect to gaining badges. What if you virtualized a pc and ran many copies of WCG? The slower and more numerous tasks would make it easier to acquire badges in a shorter time span.
Do we have any documents on virtualizing a pc?
I haven't touched Linux or vmware in years, so I have some questions like...
1) Whats the best virtualization software (virtualbox, vwmare, etc).
2) Best OS to use (should be simple to setup and consume minimum resources).
3) What are the limiting factors for the number of virtual instances and cores(just memory?).
Currently, I have my slower core2 duo pc running WCG, but it can only run 2 tasks at a time.
Thoughts on this? I'm in search of badges at WCG.
Re: WCG: Team performance and personal badge graphics
The only free, multi-platform, GPL visualization software that I know of is Virtualbox.
VirtualBox platform packages include,
o VirtualBox 4.0.10 for Windows hosts x86/amd64
o VirtualBox 4.0.10 for OS X hosts x86/amd64
o VirtualBox 4.0.10 for Linux hosts
o VirtualBox 4.0.10 for Solaris hosts x86/amd64
Virtualbox online documentation
User manual: PDF or Online
End User Docs: User FAQs - HOWTOs & Tutorials - Guest OSes
Technical Docs: Including SDK Programming Guide (API reference), FAQ, Binaries overview, etc...
For an OS, the best would be Linux. I like the Ubuntu distro (version) of Linux. The regular Desktop Ubuntu that the most use is a little bloated. Fortunately there is a minimal install of Ubuntu you can get here. Out of the box, the min install might not be ready for BOINC but adding the needed files/libraries/updates is not that difficult. Also with Virtualbox, once you have a GuestOS set up just right, you can clone it.

Thank you Fire$torm :) This is what I needed.
My plan is to acquire a farm of old pc/laptops and set them working on wcg/freehal/wuprop. Perhaps by the time the summer heat dissipates.
Your virtualbox information should be stickied where others can see it. Is there a howto section of this forum?
