Quake-Catcher Network Seismic Monitoring (QCN)
New boards, new thread...
The Quake Catcher Network (QCN) is a research project that uses Internet-connected computers to do research, education, and outreach in seismology, a collaborative initiative for developing the world's largest, low-cost strong-motion seismic network by utilizing sensors in and attached to internet-connected computers.

Re: Quake-Catcher Network Seismic Monitoring (QCN)
If this project ever figures out how to access the sensors in my Sony Vaio or Dell inspiron then I will jump on this project.
Re: Quake-Catcher Network Seismic Monitoring (QCN)
How are points accreted? is it worth the $50 for the dingle?

1 WU/machine/day=50 Cobbles/day=18250 Cobbles/year...
Worth $50 for a sensor, dunno, you will have to decide.
I'm guessing if one is interested in the project and it's science $50 isn't too much, might be a little steep if one is only interested in the credit though...
Re: Quake-Catcher Network Seismic Monitoring (QCN)
I think when my washing machine is going, it will set off the sensor.:)
Re: Quake-Catcher Network Seismic Monitoring (QCN)
I don't live in a seismic area, there would never be any good data come from my house. More likely hurricane winds blowing my house.

And is it tax deductible?
Re: Quake-Catcher Network Seismic Monitoring (QCN)
Actually, if you qualify as an educational institution (like Maxwell, maybe) you can get a sensor for free.
And I live in the Midwest, so even less earthquake prone. But even we recorded the effects of the recent earthquake up in Quebec. Having the sensors spread out helps confirm the actual strength and depth of the earthquake. So no matter where you're located, it can help with the science if you run the WU's.
Just need to get lucky like I did and fall into a few old IBM Thinkpad laptops that are actually supported without the sensor. :)
