Building another cruncher!!
Ok, before you all call me crazy. :-B
My sister needs a new computer. I told her I'll build it if she lets me crunch on it.
SHE AGREED!! \m/ Now, I only have a $400.00 budget.
This is what I have lying around.
Old case with fans,
HD,
os (Win vista),
monitor,
and I have 2 hd 5870's to put into the box.
The computer will be used by my niece for homework and internet. I'll need a PSU, MB, a processor, (hoping to go with an Amd 6 core if it fits the budget) and memory.
All help is appreciated.

Re: Building another cruncher!!
I run dual 5870s OC'd to the hilt w/ 750W. Also have 2 machines w/ 5970s running at 900 MHz on 750W. All machines supporting I7s and crunching too.

That is good to know.
Not exactly the same but close enough from what I can see.

WTG Mike! I like the way you think :-bd
For the PSU 850W sounds good as long as its a quality unit.
the math works like this: 5970 = 2x PCIe 6pin power + PCIe slot = 2x75W+75W = 225W. So two 5070s = 450W max.
AMD 1055T = 125W max.
450W+125W = 575W and subtract that from 850W leaves you with 225W for everything else.
Now if you factor in PSU power degradation, say 5% a year, after the first year the PSUs Max. output drops to 807.50W. After two years its Max. output drops to 765W.
The reason I bring this up? This power drop issue is what killed my server's ASRock board. That POS Tuniq lost enough output in just nine months to cause the failure.

Re: Building another cruncher!!
I have owned 6 Rosewill PSU's in my life (and those were the cheaper ones) and not one of them has failed. 2 of them are still running today (a 400W and a 500W) and my 550W unit is sitting in the closet as a backup (you know you have a backup too ;) ). It is ultimately up to you Mike.
P.S. What do you guys think about the other components?

Its looks a good solid setup.
I hope you don't think I was dissing your PSU suggestion?
