Motherboard Choice ???
I looking to Upgrade 9 of my Box's, the other 6 don't need it because their fairly new. Anywho I've sorta narrowed it down to this:
Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231569
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116501
Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813121606 or
Motherboard: http://204.14.213.185/Product/Produc...82E16813130573
I don't need any PSU's or Case's as what I have will do just Fine, the smallest PSU I'm running right now is 750 Watt's with some 850's & up also. All the Box's I'd be redoing have ANTEC 900 Cases so I don't see replacing them either. I will have to get a few SATA Drives as the IDE's I have in a few Box's I won't have anywhere to hook them up to but that's no big Deal as small SATA Drives are fairly cheap anyway & going to SATA makes for better Air Flow to as the Cables are smaller.
The Intel Motherboard I'm sort interested in because from everything I can tell about it it would run 2 GPU's at x16 unless I'm Mistaken, the MSI Board is the one Triggl posted about & for the price is a very nice board too: Any opinions about either board ? & correct me if I'm mistaken about the Intel Board ... Thanks

Re: Motherboard Choice ???
MSI is working very well, better than others, but if you want to participate in POEM, then you do not have a choice, you have to take PCIE 3.0 (Z77).
BTW, very impressive investment! SG should be worried about. :)
-
Re: Motherboard Choice ???
Between those 2 boards, you have no choice but to get the Intel since the MSI won't support Ivy Bridge without a BIOS update which can't be done unless you have a Sandy Bridge laying around you can install first. Pain in the ass. But even if it did support IB out of the box, i'd say get the Intel anyway. It has PCIe 3.0 where the MSI only has 2.0. Intel also has 2x more SATA 6Gb connections than MSI and 10-channel sound (you never know what may come in handy). Coronicus found both boards have 1 x16 and 1 x8 PCIe slot.
As for the expense of switching to SATA drives, this may be a bit cheaper and less hassle too: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815280001 **Edit: nevermind. Won't let you boot from it :/

Therefore, all Ivy Bridge processor will not work with this motherboard right out of box without a new BIOS update.

Quoted from intel for that motherboard
Two PCI Express* 3.0 x16 connectors (one x8 electrical)
Supports ATI CrossFireX* and NVIDIA SLI*

Have to agree for the video cards with 3.0 capabilities i would go with the z77 which runs both x16 slot at x8 PCIE 3.0.. Fyi you cannot mix the 2.0 card and still have one running @ 3.0.. the link will drop to x8 PCIE 2.0 standards.
If poem is what your optimizing for then for the video cards that run at 2.0 i would sugest going with the 2011 sandy so you can have two true PCIE 2.0 x16 specially for those beast 2.0 dual gpus imo.
I know there are some motherboards with that PCIE chip that allows more PCIE lanes but i dont understand how that makes things faster when it connects to the same single PCIE lane going to the CPU.. Maybe someone can answer this one

Basically they take advantage of there not being data flowing through the lanes 100% of the time and switch packets from 1 GPU to another. There is some additional latency added to systems that use these chips though, as it takes a moment to decide which GPU the data needs to be sent to, or which it just came from. I don't know how much they've improved lately, but using these chips to change 2 x8 slots to 2 x16 slots will actually slow you down. Their best use is preventing any slots from running at x0, such as on the MSI Big Bang Marshal. Personally i think PLX makes the best PCIe switches, but i'm really only basing that on a hunch. Nvidia and Lucid also make PCIe switches.

Re: Motherboard Choice ???
WTG Ste\/e! Can't wait to see your production curve... :D
@JPM: Regarding that add-on card you posted about. They note that the card will boot using IB but only after a BIOS update. I would suggest doing the update from a SB system just to be safe.

Re: Motherboard Choice ???
8-} ... Now I'm really Confused, Thanks Guy'z ... ;)
1'st off I don't have any particular Project in mind that I'm thinking of Updating the Box's for, all of them I guess. The Q6600 Quad Cores in them now I've been running for 6 Years as I got them as soon as they came out. Their just old & inefficient power wasters when compared to today's CPU's so it's time to Upgrade them, if not now then when the Haswells come out next year. From what I'm reading about the Haswells though is their not going to be much if any faster than whats being offered now, I'm sure they'll be a little faster in some areas but nothing dramatic.
I knew about the MSI Board having problems with the Ivy Bridge CPU's but should have read more I guess. Here's a MSI Board that might work & is $30 cheaper than the Intel Board http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130644

Probably won't be any more than what it's now, the Upgrades are for the CPU's mainly so my GPU Output isn't going to increase much if any ...

The free RAM that comes with that last board would help to offset costs. :-bd

Sorry Ste\/e, I was confusing the SATA add-on card with the quote JPM posted from MSI. Plz ignore my ignorance.... :P

Re: Motherboard Choice ???
It's Sandybridge & their out of stock already, somebody bought um up & will sell them on e-bay probably ...
If I go now I'll probably go with:
MSI Board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130644
INTEL 3770K CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116501
GSkill Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231569
Maybe order just enough of the Memory for 6 Box's, I would get 20 Free Dimm's of Memory with the Motherboards, so that would do the other 4 Box's @ 16gb each & I wouldn't have to bother trying to sell the excess Memory ...

Well I have to order the Memory by tomorrow Night or the Deal Expires, also don't know how long the free memory with the motherboards will last. I was hoping to maybe wait & see what other deals might come up before Christmas before ordering, probably between now & Christmas anyway one way or the other ... It'll give me time to rebuild the Box's while it's still winter yet.

There will be other mobo deals i'm sure, but probably not really any better than this one, except for the crazy ones like on that EVGA board that sold out in 20 secs :/ Next time, instead of RAM maybe they'll discount it more, or maybe a discount will just as much but won't include mail-in crap, etc. Basically you could buy that MSI or wait and buy something else of equal performance at an equal value. Only concern is it may turn out to be a brand you don't care for.

That's what I'm thinking too, I'm basically getting the Motherboards for $99 if you figure the cost of the Free Memory, I doubt I'd see the Motherboard selling for that any time soon ...

Most likely that will hold true. And sorry about not posting that super MSI deal sooner. Hadn't checked my email until after my first post of the day. Which is a bummer since it arrived in my box at 4:31am this morning.... :(

Re: Motherboard Choice ???
Review of that MSI board just posted today: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/...erboard_review
Seems pretty decent.
-
Re: Motherboard Choice ???
Thanks John, I'm still Procrastinating on the Order :rolleyes: I know I need to Upgrade the Box's but I have a hard time justifying the Cost of the Upgrades ...8-}
-
Re: Motherboard Choice ???
ehh...probably wouldn't hurt to wait til Haswell. It's only 5 more months. If you upgraded now you'd be feeling the itch again anyway. The motherboards won't be on sale but the CPUs should cost pretty much the same.
-
Re: Motherboard Choice ???
Yeah there's always something newer on the Horizon, trouble is you can wait forever waiting for the next best thing ... The Haswell CPU's kinda interest me even if the Clock Speed's won't be much if any different than the Ivy Bridge CPU's. There's some serious improvements in the on board Graphics, overclocking ability & other areas that double what the Ivy Bridge CPU's are capable of so it could be worth the wait since I've waited this long already. It's not like the Q6600's & Q6700's I have now are the slowest things going, their just not as fast as the Sandybridge & Ivybridge line of CPU's, so waiting isn't going to hurt me ...
Newegg's been having some good Deals on Ram, like 32gb 4x8 Dimm's for $109, some are listed as Quad Kits, correct me if I'm wrong but one could order a Quad Ram Kit & still use it as Dual Ram by splitting the Kit into 2 4x8 Kit's ??? it's the Motherboard that determines how the Ram runs & not the Ram it's self ???
-

That's correct. You can split them up all you want. Since Haswell also will use DDR3 you could load up on the cheap RAM now if you wanted to. Even use some of it elsewhere until after you upgrade.

Re: Motherboard Choice ???
Sigh, just ordered 10 set's on Memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231489 5 on my Newegg Account & 5 on My Wife's Account ... Didn't think I could get it any lower so rather than miss out I ordered the Ram anyway. Now to wait & see what better CPU & Mother Board Deals come out between now & Christmas ... 8->

Re: Motherboard Choice ???
lol ... The Memory order on my Wife's Account fell thru because Newegg refused it because it's the same address mine ... D'oh ... I have to wait 48 Hr's before ordering the same Item again if there's a Limit on how many you can order so I'll have to try again Saturday Morning if their still on sale ...
But I Ordered 5 3770k's this Morn only 5 because of the Limit Rule again: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116501 Fan Included & Free Shipping ...
Still mulling over my Motherboard options ... ... EDIT: Okay I broke down & got 5 of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157330 They took away the Free Memory but dropped the Price by another $20 so it was $30 Cheaper that the MSI Board. I didn't see any difference in the Boards & liked the looks of the ASRock more so went with them even though I have my reservations about ASRock Boards, will give them one more try ... :-ss ... The ASRock Board has a ATX/IDE Connector on it so it'll save me from buying new SATA Hard Drives right now anyway so that's another Bonus Savings. Should really get the SATA Drives, only need 2 but as long as the IDE's are still running I'll use them ...
I figure I saved about $350 by waiting a few days to order Half what I needed. Will maybe order more after the 48 Hr Newegg wait period or may wait until the Haswells come out to do the other 5 Box's that need Upgrading
-
Re: Motherboard Choice ???
Okay, so far I've Ordered:
3 Set's of G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) @ $99 each ... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231490
5 set's of G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) @ $49 each ... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231489
5 ASRock Z77 Extreme3 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard's @ $99 each ... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157330
5 Intel Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz CPU's @ $299 each ... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116501
The G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) just came up so I went ahead & ordered 3 Set's, enough to do all 10 Box's. Even if I only do 5 Now I can always run 32gb in them until I do more. I'm seeing if Firestorm can get 1 or more of the $229 3770k's at Micro Center, if he can I'll put an order in for me & my wife both & try to pick them up Saturday. Then all I'll need to get is 2 More 3770k's & 5 Motherboards ... :D .. All Items have Free Shipping too ... :D:D
I haven't ordered any Aftermarket CPU Coolers yet because I want to do a build with a slight Overclock & see how hot the CPU gets. If it's acceptable I'll just go with the Stock Cooler, if not I'll have to buy some Aftermarket Cooler's I guess ...

I've had a request for at least 1 Combination of Gigabyte DQ6 Motherboard, Q6600 CPU & the Memory on the Board already Corsair 4gb DDR2 800 speed:
I'm willing to let go of the same combinations for $100 Plus shipping, shipping shouldn't be over $15 anywhere in the USA. They come with Aftermarket Coolers too, some are different than others.
I also will have the same Combination only with a Q6700 and 1 Combination with a Q9450.
The Q6700 Combination I'll let go for $125 & the Q9450 Combination for $150.
I can get well over $100 for the Motherboards alone not counting probably $75 or more for the Q6600's, I got $75 for some Core 2 Duo's just last Month so I know the Q6600 will sell for that or more. The Q6700 & Q9450 I can get even more for, I just checked Amazon and the Used Q6600's are going for $89 & up.
So for a Combination Package for the Q6600 for $100 plus shipping is like Donating them almost ... ;)
Anybody that's interested can PM me, I'll leave them together as I take them out. If nobody in the Forum/Team wants them then after awhile I'll list them on Amazom on my Sellers Site & try to sell them that way ...
I'm just getting ready to head down to Detroit & try to pick up 5 of those $229 3770k's @ Micro Center, i have a reservation for 2 of them, will try to talk them into selling me 3 more as there's a limit of 1 Per Household. But they sent me a Confirmation for me &my Wife both so we'll see how it goes.

Amen to that. Mine oes a bit more like a few WTF or some ^$%*@, and then she throws a F!@# fit. lol. OK, it's not that bad but seems that way at times.
