lol ... Been stewing all day because I found out the XFX 7970 doesn't carry a Double Lifetime Warranty anymore like many of the 6xxx & 5xxx Cards did, this was a good selling point when it came time to resell them. It doesn't even carry a Lifetime Warranty for the Original Owner either, just a 2 Year Warranty. Was considering returning them, went to tigerdirect and checked my Order & low & behold I didn't order the XFX Model but the VisionTek 7970 Model which does carry a Lifetime Warranty unless they drop it too but for now anyway it's Lifetime for me anyway ...
Haha! That's awesome. ;) I really hope this one is as good for crunching as the specs show it should be. How long do you think it will take the coding on the software to get up to speed for the new CGN architecture? I read the whole article about it at Anandtech, and it sounds like a big step forward for AMD in the crunching arena. Glad they finally will have something to battle the CUDA force in that market. NVIDIA has needed some "real" competition there for a long time.

Moo, MW and Prime Grid don't run as is on a 7970.
Collatz appears to be running ok, WUs are completing, am awaiting validation by wingmen to see if it completed correctly.
MW and PrimeGrid PPS Sieve fall over quickly - in the first few seconds, so with luck shouldn't be too hard to find out the cause. The 7970s at least run on Collatz - await confirmation of validation - so its likely all will be well in the once there is time to focus on adjusting existing packages to keep things going until GCN can be properly brought into play.
See what the next couple of weeks brings ....
Regards
Zy
what driver version are you using... think there is a beta 12.xx if i remember corectly
Although the 7970's Zydor ran at Collatz didn't Validate they did run them quite fast 9-10 Min's ... No point in even installing the ones I'm getting if there's no place to run them ... :(
Ste\/e, it might be a lot to ask but Crunch3r is really good at optimizing apps, so maybe drop him a line and see if he can help recode an app or two. Though he is not currently a team member he did register on this forum a couple of weeks back. You can also find him at http://www.mpits.net/
I just talked to tigerdirect, if I refuse the Order it will only cost me the $8-$9 Shipping Charge to me, they were just Delivered & I refused the Shipment. Think I'd rather return them & wait until they are capable of running at all the Projects rather than just have them sitting here doing nothing, probably can get a better deal in a few weeks anyway once the initial rush to buy them dies down ... ;)
I will probably be using both the 6970 and 7970 for a while if it does end up projects don't like the new card, and just hold off on selling my 6970.
Easier to just return them and eat the $8 Shipping Charge, would have had to sell them for over $600 to get my money back on AMAZON or Newegg after they take their share of the Sale & the Shipping I would have had to pay for ... Why anybody would pay more for them when they can be had at Newegg & Tigerdirect right now is beyond me ...
Yeah, I'm thinking we do need to get in touch with Crunch3r somehow and ask him if he thinks he or someone can do some coding of the apps for the new GCN architecture. I'm sure in time it will be worth the money for the new AMD cards if they can maximize their potential.
I'm not sure but I thought that PG ATI was OpenCL. I haven't run the ATIs there in a VERY long time. POEM is OpenCL but the CPU and GPU loading really suck!
According to MW you can run the Nvidia OpenCL program on the ATIs and it works. Doing wu in about 60 seconds. Slower than a 5870 but better than collecting dust!
poem and albert work fine on the 7970, though albert is having issues with the validator, and its only validating 7970s against other 7970s... As mentioned above, yes, using the NVidia openCL app seems to be working for MW, I am completing a task in about 50 sec. I haven't tried other projects yet.
I finally picked up several VisionTek HD 7970's, trouble is the Drivers won't install for Windows XP 64-Bit, I tried the 12.1a Drivers for Win XP 64-Bit & Drivers directly from the VisionTek Site for Windows XP 64-Bit.
All that installs is the Install Manager as far as I can tell, looks like the Drivers are there but not in the System where they need to be ... Getting ready to pull the Card out for now ...
So lame...:p:mad:
Downloading some new WHQL Drivers released today, the other Drivers may not have even been for use ? but the ones from VisionTek should have been I would think ...
Nope, same as the other Drivers Installs the Drivers never actually get installed just placed in the C:\AMD Directory but not in the System Directories ... I contacted VisionTek about it but won't hear from them for a day or 2 I suspect ... I may need to go to Windows 7 anyway eventually to see the full potential of the 7970's since their a 384 Bit Card & Windows XP 64-Bit is only a 256 Nit System, I think anyway, but wanted to try them in the XP System first, may not matter for just BOINC'ing ... ???
Well if you would like to test Win7 for 3 months before buying it, have a look at this post ---> http://www.setiusa.us/showthread.php...ll=1#post10870
I'll keep that in mind, want to try to get them to work with XP if at all possible 1'st ... Thanks
Spent the last 3-4 Hr's messing with the 7970 on Win XP 64 Bit :-B there's actually Drivers for Win XP 64-Bit on the CD that comes with the 7970. They are the only ones I've been able to get to install so far but that's about it. It takes forever to Boot up with the Drivers from the CD (5-10 Min's) & once booted up it's just stuck in 640x480 mode I think it is & the ccc won't come up to function. If I use the display properties to try and get to 1600x1200 mode the screen goes blank & I have to reboot again. I tried other latest drivers but they don't even install 12.1 WHQL was the latest, just get BSOD when using them & memory dumps after 5-6 Min's of being in Windows XP 64 Bit ... Will wait for response from VisionTek to see what they have to say before making any decisions about the Cards.
EDIT: Will put the NVIDIA Card back in for now until I hear from VisionTek or some other solution comes up as the X980E Box is just sitting there now dead in the water & not running BOINC ...
Damn. Ste\/e that just blows goats. It seems being an early adopter can be a pain.
It occurred to me that one issue with your card might have something to do with it being PCIe 3.0 compliant. Maybe WinXP doesn't understand the hardware and is freaking out. Just a thought.....
Bright Boys at VisionTek, first response to me was what Card was I talking about  I gave them the Model # thought that might be a good indication on what card it was ...
Well I got Win 7 64 Bit installed on one of my X980E Box's (Still Hate Win 7) & the 7970 Drivers that came on the CD Work, not quite sure what version of driver it is but will check later if I keep Win 7 on the Box. Can't get the Wireless USB Adapter working, downloaded what I thought were the proper drivers from the Belkin site with a Internet Connected Box but still no go after installing them on the Win 7 Box so I have no Internet Connection on the Box yet.
What I hate most about Win 7 is that it's just as bad as Linux with all the restrictions to do anything, I can't even change MSI Afterburner to unofficial mode 0 to 1 because Win 7 says I don't have permission to do that. Is there any way to give myself Complete Permission to do anything I want with or in Win 7 ???
Worse comes to worse I'll just Format the drive & reinstall Win XP & forgo using the 7970's until possibly a proper driver comes out for WIN XP, but I can't live with not being able to do what I want with a OS ...
Huh. Win7 always found way more drivers for my stuff than XP, so guess I never ran into that snag. Type in UAC into the little run box off the start menu, and click on the resulting link, and turn it off. Next thought is, are you logged in as Admin? I'm guessing that you're just logged in as a regular user name.
Here is a good link with only 2 quick steps you have to do to login as administrator and he has pictures of the screen for each step! ;)
http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-7...administrator/
That should solve as much of your permissions problems as possible!
Also, you can usually use Vista64bit and sometimes even XP64bit drivers on low demand hardware like a USB wireless, and it will work.
Okay DP that got me going anyway, I tried the Drivers for the USB Net Adapter that I use on Win XP & it worked so at least now I got it connected to the Net. Now I need to know How to adjust the settings for System Restore, it's taking up so much space I hardly have any left on the C:\ Drive ??? ... Probably be tomorrow before I get BOINC Running on it again or at least late tonight, have to go away for awhile so I won't be able to mess with it for some Hr's again ... Thanks
Right-click the "My Computer" icon either on your desktop or in the Windows Explorer folder tree (Left-hand Column) and select "Properties". This will bring up the System page of Control Panel. In the left column click "Advanced System Settings". On the pop-up windows that appears click on the tab labeled "System Protection". There you will find the settings for system restore.
To make Win7 life easier. Disable UAC completely. Click the Start Menu button (Blue Orb) and in the search box the appears just above it type UAC. Click the link "Change User Account Control Settings" that appears at the top of the list. In the pop-up window move to control slider to the bottom and then click the OK button. No more stupid Windows messages.

F$ beat me to it. ;) Let us know how you get on with it, and if you have any more questions!
Thanks for the Links F$ & the help DP, some of them I already had & some not from installing Win 7 on my Laptop last year but that was more a set it & forget it thing so I never messed with it much. Installing Win 7 on more box's will get me to be more familiar with the OS I guess so the Links will help as I mess with it ... Almost had BOINC running on it last night but for some reason it installed it in the wrong place even though I told it where to Install it so I could just take off from where I was with Win XP. I thought I did but might have messed up as I was Mentally wore out from trying to get things to work, think the only thing I need to do now is get BOINC running & Activate the OS then see what Project/Projects I can get the 7970's to run right on ...
EDIT: Need to get the 2 Win 7 Box's to Share with each other too, they Share with the XP Box's but not with each other yet, made some Sharing changes so will go start the other Win 7 Box back up again & see if that worked or not ...
