CRAP CRAP CRAP The Coolers came today but I'm still dead in the water, I haven't received any of the Memory shipped on 2 different Orders. 1 Of the shipments arrived at Des Plains Illinois on the 26'th but I still haven't got it. It's shouldn't take over 4 Day's to get to me in Mid Michigan from Illinois. So I can't do anything with the Rebuild yet ...
I fired off a e-mail to Newegg & let them know what I thought of their DHL Shipping Method ...:mad:

If the shipper is DHL then you should looking for our stuff to arrive in your mailbox. For econo-shipping DHL hands off the package(s) to your local Post Office and they make final delivery. It a method that is slow for sure.

That's one of the benefits of living 2 hours away from Memphis. Most items from NewEgg are overnighters for free.

Yep :) Living here in Jackson, TN and when i lived next to trigggl in AR, everything was next day except for the rare cases they didn't have it at their memphis warehouse. Unfortunately i have to pay sales tax in TN, but not when i was in AR.

Re: Motherboard Choice ???
If I order anything before Noon from Tiger Direct down in Ohio I get it the nest day, trouble is their prices are usually a lot higher than Newegg.
If I knew it was going to take this long to get the Memory I would have run down to Micro Center & got the Corsair 16gb 12800 10-10-10-27 Memory they had on sale a few days ago for $35. Even with tax it would have been only about $38.60 which would have been $11 cheaper than I paid for the GSkill Memory from Newegg. I could have shipped the Memory from Newegg back once I did get it. Today's Saturday, so if I don't get the 1'st shipment of Memory it'll be Monday at the earliest before I do get it ...

Re: Motherboard Choice ???
I think they do not like you! I ordered memory the same day and got it yesterday, even using the 'econo-shipping' method.....
But mine came via Fedex, and not DHL.

Fedex headquarters is in Memphis, so that would explain that. They send memory usually from the West Coast I think and they use DHL from there for some reason. I think I had the same problem. In fact, I think they sent it from the West Coast to Memphis and from there it got shipped South instead of West. It got halfway to Florida before they figured it out and sent it back up to Memphis to go West. I think I got it about 3 days late.
So, I guess the rule of thumb is, unless you live on the West Coast, expect G. Skill to take twice as long as they tell you. :-w

I got both shipments of Memory an hour ago, 1 shipped 3 days before the other one but they both came the same day ... 8-}
Don't know how much time I'll get the next few days to work on the Re-build, promised the wife I'd take her to the movies this afternoon. Tomorrow & Monday it's supposed to get up into the 60's so I might go Golfing, Tuesday I have to take the wife to the Doctor, so it'll be sporadic at best working on the Re-builds ...

lol ... Yeah Right
Probably start one rebuild in the morning, I'm wondering whether I'll have to re-install Win 7 or not. I know a lot of times when you change a lot of hardware Windows makes you do a re-install of the OS. That will take longer than the Rebuild it's self ...

If your OS is not OEM you shouldn't have to do a reinstall only a reactivate.

Since, from the installed Windows point of view, it will see all new MB hardware, especially CPU, then the answer is YES. Windows may not even boot if it "sees" a different CPU then what it was installed on/with.
BTW, I could build a Win7 installer DVD image with most if not all the current Windows updates already added (aka Slipstreamed) in. Interested? Just tell me which version of Win7 to build. Note that I will not slipstream license keys into any images.

Re: Motherboard Choice ???
IDK. I've numerous hardware updates including CPUs ,mobos, the works and never had to reinstall. It should boot and ask to reactivate. If it fails to activate online I can show you how to activate by phone.

OK, but its almost never worked for me and the one or two times it did I ended up with a ton of driver issues and BSODs. Got fed up both times and Nuked the installed Windows and started from scratch.

I've had to do a complete re-install myself before. But once a simple "repair" did the trick. Windows seems to be real picky on how it decides how much trouble to cause you.

I feel better knowing it is not just me that starts from scratch and downloads 150+ updates to Windows 7 SP 1 after a major change to hardware. Could just be wishful thinking, but the boxes seem to be a lot faster after a fresh install of Windows.
Edit: are you saying you do not download 150+ updates but have them saved somewhere?

Re: Motherboard Choice ???
1 down & 9 to go, took about 7 Hr's  but I was dealing with a BIOS that was completely strange to me & a Corsair cooler that I had to pull the Motherboard 3 times to get installed right & a Fresh install of Win 7 but no SP1 yet. The next one should go a lot faster as I now know how the Corsair cooler is installed properly & I won't fiddle around for an hour or so trying to get the Hardware CD for the Motherboard to show up.
The Box would Boot up to the point of going into Win 7 but the a flash of BSOD would show up & it would reboot it's self again. No matter what I did the CD for the Hardware wouldn't come up either, some other garbage would but never the CD. After playing around for an hour or so I just threw the Win 7 CD in and did a re-install of the OS. I've never seen an improvements in time by installing SP! so for now I'll just run it the way it is.
Definitely way faster than the Q6600 that was in it when running POEM, just running at the Stock CPU Speed 3.5GHZ for now to let it break in a little but the times have dropped from around 43-44 Min's to about 25-26 Min's running just 4 with HT turned off. Not quite twice as fast but once I jack it up to about 4.2GHZ it should be twice as fast then. Doesn't seem to like running 8 in HT Mode though, very slow, seemed to run 4 just as fast in HT Mode as when not in HT Mode but when trying 8 it slowed way down. But it only has a single 570 in it, the only other Box I run in HT Mode is my i920, run 8 POEM Wu's in that but it has 2 7970's in it so can't really compare them.
The Corsair cooler H80 works good, about 50c under BOINC Load so that's okay by me, now all I need is a CD with all the SP1 Updates on it so I don't have to spend 4 Hr's downloading over the wireless network out to the garage ...

This is what I was referring to in my last post. I have all but 9~10 updates plus no SP1. Personally I will NOT install SP1 on any of my boxen because of Windows update #KB971033 and a few others. Certain updates are nothing more then M$ spyware so no go. Now if M$ was willing to do a 50/50 share of the profits generated from that spyware, that would be a different story.
Anyhoot, I can DL and slipstream SP1 and add it to Win7 for someone else if interested. Of course if you want to do it yourself then use the RTse7en lite slipstreaming tool (Link)

Okay & Thanks Mumps, I'm in the process of re-building the 2'nd Box so I'll go start the Download will I'm re-building. I suspect I'll have to re-install the OS on this Box too, all of them for that matter so I'll try & build the CD once I'm done with the re-build.
Not happy at all so far with the ASRock Motherboard, Overclocks okay or at least it say's it's overclocked but the times for the Wu's are no different, if anything they run slower. I'm just doing this re-build to see if there's a difference in the MBoards. If I get the same results with Overclocking I'm going to try & return all the Boards and get something different. I really didn't want the ASRock but for the Price figured I'd take a chance. I've had notheing but dismal results with every ASRock Board I've had when it comes to OC'ing ...

Dont forget with these new motehrboards when overclocing you have to set the max Wattage for em in two places or the board will down clock the cpu..

Re: Motherboard Choice ???
Second Box is Rebuilt but it's DOA right now, all the fans are working but nothing comes up on the screen. Tried 2 different video cards but nothing, they were a GTX480 & a HD5870, going to try a GTX570 after I eat, I read in the reviews of the motherboard it doesn't want to recognize older cards so maybe a 570 will work. The 1'st build I had a 570 in it soooooooo it's worth a try, if that doesn't work i'll try different Memory. If that doesn't work I'll swap the Motherboard tomorrow, if that works I'll have to ship the Board in it now back to Newegg & hope I get a good one back ...

I just used the Overclock Genie that comes with the Board, CoreTemp said it was still running at the Stock 3.5GHZ Speed while RealTemp said it was running at 4.2GHZ. The on board overclocking software isn't noted for it's reliability so I may have to try manually OC'ing it after I read up a little how other guys are Overclocking the Board with the 3770k ...
-
Re: Motherboard Choice ???
No CPU-Z? Like windows, i think CoreTemp only reports stock info and will not show an increase when OCd or a decrease when in power saving mode. I could be wrong though..
Nevermind...no you're right. It should show it. Hmmm...

CoreTemp will show a Overclock because I see it on the Box's I do have Overclocked. That's what was weird, CoreTemp din't show the OC but RealTemp did.
I got the 2'nd build to fire up, changed video cards & Memory but still no good so I ripped everything back out & looked at the Pin's for the CPU. Sure enough one looked like it was split in half, weird. Anywho I got another MBoard out & looked at the Pins first & they looked ok so I re-built it with the different MBoard. Still didn't fire up on the 1'st boot but the second boot it booted almost to windows then re-booted like the other one did. So I'll have to reload Win 7, probably will have to to all of them as I rebuild them ...
I tried to do a slipstream but the RT7 Lite kept locking up on me before I could do anything with it. Also the SP1 Update umps had me download wouldn't work by it's self, said It wasn't made for the Version of Win 7n I had (Win 7 Pro) ... I'll just do a Win 7 re-install in the morning ...

Well you are making progress so that is good.
The RT7 tool is finicky to be sure. A real PITA at times but it does work. One thing I've noticed, you should not be running any other programs when using the tool. I also shut down all background utils like Afterburner and such. Oh yeah, one more thing. RT7 is a lot faster if you have a second hard drive for it to do the slipstreaming on.

Re: Motherboard Choice ???
Whew, just spent about 4 Hr's Modifying my Full Tower SilverStone Case so I could mount one of the Corsair H80's to the outside of the case. Got it mounted now, will put the New parts in after I eat & install the new OS tomorrow morning ... Got the 3'rd rebuild up & running this morning so the Silverstone will be the 4'th when I get it running ...
-
Re: Motherboard Choice ???
7 Box's rebuilt & online so far, will get 2 more done probably tomorrow or Saturday at the latest. 1 Box will have to wait for parts, I sent 1 Corsair H80 DOA & 1 ASRock Motherboard DOA back today. The Motherboard will be replaced by Newegg but it'll probably be about a 2 week turn around if not longer. The Corsair H80 I ordered a new one from TigerDirect for $84 with a $15 Rebate to bring it down to $69. Hopefully nothings wrong with the Parts I have left for the 2 Box's I'll rebuild shortly. I know the Coolers are good because I tested them already, so as long as nothings wrong with the 2 Motherboards I have left I should be okay ...
-
Re: Motherboard Choice ???
Great news on the running hardware. For those H80s, that is not a bad average for used/refurbished parts. good luck on the other two systems.

Yeah, was hoping for 8 or 9 of the H80 coolers to be working ones, looks like 9 will make it. Got the 8'th Box done this morning already, should be able to get the 9'th one done this afternoon. Then I can get back to a normal life again & wait for the parts for the 10'th Box to come in ... :)

I installed SP1 on 1 of the 3770k Box's several days ago using the Windows Updater & the KB976932-X64 is what the Windows Updater installed. But if I Download the KB976932-X64.exe which I did like you said to do it won't install, something about the SP1 Service Pack I'm using isn't the right one for my OS, all I can think is that other things need to be Updated first before I try & install the SP1 Update. Not that big a deal, the Box with the SP1 Update doesn't run any faster than the ones without it ...
-
Re: Motherboard Choice ???
Whoopee, got 9 rebuilt & running in 5 days, waiting for the parts for the 10'th rebuild, not bad for a country boy ... :p
