You know you've Boinc'ed too much
Just thought I would share the amusement;
Seems I've been thinking about chrunching too much, it's invaded my dreams...or I guess you can say nightmares. Last night dreampt that one of the WU's spawned a sub project while being chrunched which promptly chrunched on it's own and was submitted to a challenge for credit, where the validation promptly FAILED! Damn you dream wingman!

hahahahahahaha.
MORE BEER! :o)
I've not yet dreamed about this hobby but do think about it waaaaay too much. :p

Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
I knew I BOINC too much when I walked into Best Buy today to buy a battery backup for the Silver Hammer only to find out that they don't actually sell one that's big enough...

Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
Well as for me...my moms pc was dying and I gave her one of my systems..a Dell 490 dual quad completely setup for MW and have had to call her to walk thru some Boinc stuff on the phone before, She is in her 70's and tells her friends she is doing scientific stuff on her pc 24/7. My mom keeps an eye on it to make sure its always running. Never forget the email she sent me saying the 5 Boinc icons on the thingy at the bottom right corner of the screen...whats wrong lol..awwh mom just restart it and everythings gonna be fine!! :p

Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
I can tell when certain projects are running based on how my computer is "acting" at the time.
-
Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
I know there's a problem when it gets too quiet. If the fans slow down, it's not crunching...

...when 50% of your "friends" are on SETI.USA! :D:cool:
EDIT: ...when your home page is Free-DC.ORG!
...when your electric bill doubles and you didn't add any lights to your house!
...when you talk about crunching something like it's a "good thing". :D

Done that on several road trips!

Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
You are having multiple 20amp 110v lines brought into your command center to balance the load...
Your computer room is warm.... In winter.. with the heat off...*-:)
Your electric bill makes you cry

This is a foreign concept to me. Why would you even need to take it? My computers run just fine on their own whether I'm in the same state with them or not. Which leads me to my entry.
You know when you take the time to learn scripting so you can administer it remotely and set it to start/stop projects on its own.
I wrote a script to keep all tasks suspended except (No. of cores)+1. After a task completes it resumes another one. That way I don't get 10 tasks partially completed. It's good for challenges to make sure as many tasks get completed on time as possible rather than wasting time on tasks that won't complete.

I take the lappy because I like having a computer with me when I travel to keep up with email, do work, etc...

Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
Heat drops by 3 degrees in office, you know the GPU ran out of work.
When you think about how to maximize crunching power for every person that asks you a computer question.
Christmas list is all PSU's, GPU's, cases and motherboards.:)

Work, say no more. That's something I don't take with me.

One word: daisychain.

Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
When you go to Best Buy to purchase a new camera, you end up trying to convince the camera salesman that he needs install BOINC, connect to PG and join the SETI.USA team as soon as he gets off from work.
and later when you get home and read the section of the manual about the camera's "computer connection outlet" (do 3rd graders translate these things?) and you wonder whether it can crunch.

1) Did he join?
2) No, not 3rd graders but rather foreign 6th graders and Translated by 3rd graders :P

WHO can afford the FUEL for that thing??? I remember when my Dad had a single Mercury BlackMax 250 outboard on our Whaler and on "cruise" it burned 16GPH. I can't imagine what that sucker above burns per hour! :-o

That picture was forwarded to me with the following "internet" story. No telling if it's true, and I usually assume it's not.

2,000 HP Outboard Inflatable ...
Here's the latest drug runner toy from B.C ...
This thing belted across the English Bay channel 3 times
per week, and was just a blur on the Radar of the
British Columbia Coast Guard.
They were so astonished by the speed of the
unknown craft that they brought in a special high-
speed Helicopter to chase it.
Drugs were found on board. Of course, you'd have to be on
drugs to push the throttle down on this thing!!

Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
Those boats are more common then you think. the coast guard around here run light boats with 4 300's (mod's) on them. I can deffently see the 4 video cards though! :-|

Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
You know you've BOINC'ed too much when you watch an episode of Eureka and get really excited because they are talking about using sleeping humans as a distributed computing system...

Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
...when you read license plates that start "H##..." and your immediate thought is of a new model water cooler for the CPU.
...when you buy a video card because you don't want to lose all production when you have to RMA your other video cards.

Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
When you are all but unemployed yet spend your entire tax return on upgrades so you can crunch more.

(Yeah, I'm gonna be THAT GUY....but it's tax time, and it needs to be said at least once.)
You gave an interest free loan to the government? They (we) would not do the same for you.
-
Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
So it is better to owe the government at the end of the year? Not sure I understand that logic. No matter how you file it will all end up the same. They will either charge you the taxes at the end of the year or you will get "some" back. I would rather get a check from them then have to write one. Yes, they get a free "loan" for the year but my tiny amount of taxes probably does not buy an F-15.

It's not the difference to the government that matters. It is the lost interest (at worst), or lost investment gains (better) that you could have made on that money had it been in your pocket for a year, rather than theirs (ours).
Edit: Think about it this way: You could kept all the same cash you eventually ended up with anyway, PLUS a GPU paid for with the interest/gains you earned on your own money.
-
Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
Ok, I could see your point if your are owing/getting 10s of thousands of dollars, but I personally would not see much "return" on a $700 annual investment and as I stated before, my $700 is not going to get the government a whole lot either. Even if I invested that $700 and made a whole...lets say.....$28 then guess what....they tax me on that! And I still have to pay them them the $700 at the end of the year plus the tax on the $28. I am guessing that you make way more money then I do.

Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
You know you've BOINC'ed too much when you have 230k credits randomly show up on a project you haven't crunched in a couple months...
-
Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
Instead of your Social Security Number, you have your Cross Project ID memorized.

Been there done that. I have a Best Buy one block from my home. I find myself there during challenges. I never get anything, cause they are too expensive and not good performance equipment. Now if there was a New Egg one block from my house...

Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
When you get depressed because your RAC will drop by 15K because someone turned off the computers that were crunching in your cubicle -- even though you quit working there 45 days earlier!
-
Re: You know you've Boinc'ed too much
That's easy:
When your throwing breakers.
Your utility bill doubles.
You don't use your primary computer because you don't want to lose credits.
You check your machines when your on vacation.
You buy upgrades only so you can crunch more.
You leave the AC on 24/7.
The word farm has a totally different meaning.
You start eyeballing machines at work.
You bought a calculator just for figuring credits.
And last - you know your crunching to much when everybody around you doesn't understand what the hell your doing.
Patrick

I don't even bother to try. Every time my wife asks me what I'm doing, "Nothing".
Obviously, she doesn't understand why I have a playstation running 24 hours a day that I can't play games with and can't watch netflix with. In fact, it's not even hooked up to a monitor, just power and ethernet.
If she knew what boinc'ing was that's how she would know.
