To dream...........
Let's pitch in and get 2!
All of my CPUs and GPUs are nitrogen cooled. After all, air is 78% nitrogen!
JPM - is AMD going to make a "dual GPU" card with this, like the 5970 and 6990 were? Or will it exceed the capabilities of the mobos if they do that for this latest one?
Rumor is they'll make one. My gut tells me they will too. How can you pass that up? lol As for exceeding motherboard capabilities, remember the 7000 series uses PCIe 3.0. Of course if your motherboard is only PCIe 2.0, which most are, you may see a performance decrease (in gaming, not crunching), though it won't be very significant. It's kind of like plugging a SATA 3 hard drive into a SATA 2 port. No big deal.
As for the PCIe wattage specs, yes the 7990 would be over 300W, which is the "limit", but both AMD and Nvidia have both already crossed this limit in the past with the HD 6990 and Nvidia GTX 590, so i don't see that being something that hold them back either. I wouldn't be too shocked if a 7990 reference card popped up at CES in the next few days :)
yeah it's looking like Nvidia won't have Kepler ready until Q2, but, regarding AMD's 7000 series, Nvidia did say “Kepler is much better than that“. No one is able to confirm if Kepler is even going to make an appearance at CES, but we'll find out tomorrow at 4pm PST at their press conference. Hopefully the CEO won't be holding up another fake card this year :p
Out of Stock already on all the 7970 Cards, no big deal though as better Cards will come out ...
Aye cant wait to have a couple of these.. gonna have to sell off my two 6950 for em hopefully i can recoup some cost once the stock on these card finally meet the demand so i dont pay and arm and a leg for one... +$600 is way to much for one
Our 5870s will finally seem long in the tooth crunching wise. There won't be a comparison. ;)
The 5870 has 2,720 GFLOPS @ 188W for a whopping 14.47 GFLOPs/WATT. An unbeatable card for years.
The new 7970 has 3,789 GFLOPS @ 250W for an even better 15.16 GFLOPS / WATT. That is a 40% performance increase in GFLOPS, without going to dual GPU card or using another PCI-e slot! I think a lot of people that are kind of dismissing this card are forgetting how many watts you had to throw at previous generation cards to get that kind of performance out of it before. Yes, it's damn expensive. Yes, there will be better cards in the future, but for right now - this is a pretty sweet card. Hopefully NVIDIA's Kepler will be "all that" and more . . . and then we'll have real GPU competition again! I also can't wait to see them come out with a dual GPU beast based on this thing:D
The other thing is that the new architecture, CGN, will be a lot more "crunching friendly" than the old VLI architecture. So, when compilers and code gets up to speed on the new stuff, we should see an even bigger jump in the new cards than their strict GFLOPS comparison suggests.
Also one other thing to note - for a project like MilkyWay that requires double precision, the new 7970 has roughly 75% higher double precision GFLOPS than our 5870s do. ;)
Had a chance to order 2 Regular XFX Editions but passed, I'll wait for the Dual Fan Model which will hopefully run cooler.
I'll try the Single Core 1'st & if I like it I'll maybe get 1 or 2 Dual Core Models. So far Newegg & AMAZON is the only place I've seen them, AMAZON is charging $40 more than Newegg so I can wait until Newegg has the Model I want at a lower price. Usually I don't get the new models until they've been out several month's anyway, price settles down by then & their in good supply.
I agree with both you there - I do want one of these, or depending on the price/performance ratio, the future dual GPU version of this - but even if I had the cash today for it, I would wait a bit. I'm sure we've all been burnt before by pulling the trigger a hair too soon.:p:o
Just a heads up, newegg has the sapphire and diamond GPUs in stock again. I just ordered one of the sapphire GPUs from there :D

HAHA to funny. Well, at least the diamond is still in stock:

i got simap running, but LHC and NRG have work atm also, so doing those as well...
Also, newegg is all sold out again :D
I ordered 2 of the XFX 7970's last night from tigerdirect.com, they had them in stock (out now) & I usually get anything I order from them the next day if I order by Noon or in 2 day's anyway. They already shipped last night so I should have them tomorrow afternoon. I decided to go ahead and get 2 now & if I like them possibly 2 later on when better models come out. I'm so anemic in the ATI Dept & needed some more ATI's & now that I waited for them to come out I may as well get a few for now anyway & wait & see what NVIDIA has to offer hopefully in the mid-year ...
Will do, I'm a little leery right now though, sometimes these New Generation Cards don't work right away at the Projects. I remember sending some back because they wouldn't run the Wu's & the Projects didn't have any Idea when they would be able to ... |-)
Check out the NVIDIA Fan Boy Review: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131452
No way can the Card be as bad as he say's, I have 580's & 590's too & they get hot, especially the 590, I've had 8800 GTX's too & their extremely slow compared to today's Cards.Quote:
Pros: Slightly faster than a nVidia 8800 GTX
Cons: Is easily destroyed by nVidia GTX 580
Other Thoughts: Well what can I say, a real disappointment, dis card get stomped by nVidia last gen, nViidia be the champ, ATI be the loser, and the card gets hot, by this I mean it is too hot to touch, why I can't pick it up without burning my hand? If I have animal in house I can't let it close to card very dangerous.
Please go nVidia it is the only true solution for gamer.
Personally I've never been a Fan of either ATI or NVIDIA, I've had plenty of both & like both & just go with what gets me the best results without Dissing either ...
Yeah, some people write reviews & don't even own the Cards ... :-@
So at Nvidia's press conference yesterday, nothing was said about Kepler. They just went on and on about Tegra 3, which is pretty impressive, but doesn't help us out :/
Ah, bummer then. OK, it looks like for the time being, the high end 7000 series from AMD will be where the best GFLOPS / Watt is, right? Can't wait to see when and what price the dual GPU version of this baby debutes at! :D
