Nice post and nice crunching on NFS, I have a UOTD for today at Numberfields that is factorization also, is there any difference between the several projects of number theory? Because they are so many, what is different the search, the method or any other thing?
Maybe you don't know either but I think someone inside the projects should know.
First reading, that project has nothing to do with factorization.
Factorization is to factor a integer into two or more prime factors. Example: 15 is equal to 3 x 5, correct? 3 and 5 are one digit integers, prime numbers, only divisible by 1 or by themselves.
:) See it was easy. So in spite of what is being told that the projects do the same work and are duplicating the crunching to do exactly the same, that is not true. The work is very different and the conclusions are different tools to use in difference sciences.
No work is lost, they are not opening new projects to do the same work, no matter what it seems to us we don't have the enough knowledge to distinguish, what for us are small differences are completely different projects from the inside point of view.
A question of perspective. Thanks Carlos that was very useful.:o
The only two math projects that I am aware of doing double work was GIMPS vs Mersenne@home, the latter is closed (it was a waste of energy due to lack of knowledge by crunchers side), and probably now http://oproject.goldbach.pl/index.php vs http://www.ieeta.pt/~tos/goldbach.html. In contact with our fellow Tomás Oliveira he can't tell me for sure if there's double work on the goldbach conjecture because the former project doesn't publish very well the results. So he has lots of doubts.
John P. Myers is down, next is theflux.
The original BOINC Goldbach project? It never actually did any real work. It was all UPPERCASE.
No idea. But there is this one that that many of us have credit in (the one I referenced):
http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=proj&proj=gol
3 and 5 are prime, but being 1 digit isn't part of it. 6 is a 1 digit composite number (divisable by 3 and 2), but 11 is a 2 digit number which can't be factored, hence prime. Prime Grid would be looking for some very large prime numbers.
As to the question asked, different math projects would be, testing different theories and the like. So no, they aren't all the same....
You didn't understand what I said. First I was giving a easy example to be understood and then I said breaking a composite integer into prime factors, 11 is already a prime factor that is actually proven as a prime. Prime factor is difference than only saying prime.
Take a look at the latest result: 3,637- factors
Quote:
The composite cofactor of 3,637- was the product of 85-digit and 127-digit prime numbers:
85-digit prime factor:
24362371790048691036429470508868735523952360071637 25889114267732351631395223998169289
127-digit prime factor:
12956206377215132913440461501990192401304695432213 25214558795515080650922339897532747195922323001636 473409360593989593377975691
Thanks go to M. Vang for performing the postprocessing. The factors have been reported to the Cunningham project and have been recorded on Page 125.
In a simple way:
Primegrid looks for primes of the form N = k*b^n +/- 1, so they use a primality proving program called LLR.
NFS@Home, for the Cunningham Project (example), seeks to factor the numbers b^n +- 1 for b = 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, up to high powers n, by finding PRP's. A PRP is a probable prime number, a number that nobody knows how to prove or disprove its primality. A PRP could probably be proven prime using either Primo or a distributed version of ECPP.
Anyway, I posted a list of references where you can study this matter.
Uh oh. Mumps remembered he had done work on this project and is laying it down this month. No chance of catching him now.
Passed theflux, next is darksheik.
Nice job, Carlos. Keep up the good work. :)
Within two days darksheik is history. Then Dean Loros to be stomped.
I'm slowly going up the stats with only one little tiny machine...la la la la la
Let's see if you can get me. BTW, looking at your computers you are not maximizing your credit output. For the machines you have more than 1GB per thread/core you should run the lasievef application that gives you 65 points per wu in contrast with lasieved and lasievee applications that give you 36 e 44 points, respectively. So go to here:
http://escatter11.fullerton.edu/nfs/...subset=project
and set up your NFS@Home preferences like this (see bold):
lasieved - app for RSALS subproject, uses less than 0.5 GB memory: no
lasievee - work nearly always available, uses up to 0.5 GB memory: no
lasievef - used for huge factorizations, uses up to 1 GB memory: yes
lasieve5f - used for huge factorizations, uses up to 1 GB memory: no
For the machines with less than 1GB per thread you can create a different profile or you can run 3 instances lasievef application. Note that running 3 instances of lasievef application (195 points) gives you more credit than running 4 instances of lasieved application (144 points).
:-t I don't think it's a question of if Fire$torm will catch you but when.:-ss
And I'm just curious...why did you choose NFS as your sole project? If you're concerned about maximizing credits, there are other projects with better credit/hour ratios.
Tyler O. nice to see you posting. I wouldn't let Carlos answer to that because he doesn't know the answer to that question.
The true is Portuguese are stubborn and a bit crazy as the damn Duke.
Sorry Carlos I couldn't resist ...
Very Crazy and Stubborn Duke.
He will never catch me.
I like math related projects but even more when integer factorization is concerned. The math here is very difficulty and beautiful at the same time. The algorithms are amazing. The factorization of integers from the Cunningham project started in 1925, it is one of the oldest continuously ongoing projects in computational number theory. I am joining fun, knowledge and better credit/hour ratio with NFS@Home.
I don't run 100 % Boinc, I also do some factorization backstage work (ecm, post-processing) for different factorization projects like CGW, Oddperfect, Lucas and Fibonacci, etc.
BTW, did you see the smoke when I passed you? lol
I will get you both buddies

Thanks for joining the Stomp DD (Dr Dan) and for sure I would like to have one more Mumps.
Many thanks to Mumps [MM], Carlos Pinho, Fire$torm [BlackOps], Mike029.SETI.USA [BlackOps], Duke of Buckingham SETI.USA, PJS, denim, tracy, Fogle.SETI.USA [BlackOps], Jonathan Brier, Kevin McAllister, fk&soph (our french friends) and of course to Dr Dan.
Together we are on the right pass to accomplish the best things and for sure they are all amazing.
Thank you for your help.
That's cool. Was just gonna offer some suggestions for other projects if you wanted them. So you're primarily interested in the interger factorization and not the credits, which is why you only run the NFS app that gives the most credit and not the other three. Makes sense. I guess I'm the crazy one for thinking there might have been more to it. Since you like numbers, should try calculating what people are capable of crunching and not just looking at their current output on one project before claiming that they'll never pass you. In the meantime, enjoy passing those of us not even working on the project at the moment. Congrats on the 350,000 milestone. And if you're throwin' off smoke, what's Mumps [MM]? A freakin' wildfire?! Hot damn! :-o
tyler o. the important is that you crunch something that makes you happy. The most important for me is to feel good with my crunching and know that my Electric Power money is not spend with no return to the human race.
As Factorization is an important tool on the research of molecules and in many other fields of so many sciences, I crunch it. I don't think the points count much (not for me). Points are only a measure of our crunching here in Boinc.
I would change all the points for having a nice discovery that could help other human beings to survive or to live better their lives while they are amongst ourselves. I would change all my points for children to have good water to drink, good foo to eat or only decent air to breath.
The real reason I am here is to work for a better world and meanwhile be happy while I do it.
So crunch anything you may think will serve human race and when you don't know just ask because all projects have someone to defend them and meanwhile: Don't worry, Be happy and of course keep on crunching.

Happy Duke
I'll say again, he will never pass me. lol
I am enjoying passing static members, it makes me feel good to go up in the rankings without having to add more machines to my effort. It's fun! :p
Mumps is not of my league, can't tease him. If I do so I will be smoked.
BTW, thank you for your nice words.
Take care. Carlos .
Yep, I don't stand a chance of catching you... Yet :P But note that I had 10,444 credits tallied yesterday. My CPU core will be going up a tad in the near future so.....
@tyler o.: I am running NFS mainly because I was asked to help out, so here I am. I've done quite a bit of PrimeGrid, YoYo and Primeboinca so its good to spread the love.
Peace,

Yesterday NFS@Home had a hard drive failure and Greg took the project down to allow the RAID array to rebuild more quickly but in less than 4 hours it was up again. When I got home from my swimming I though my remote machine was dead...lol
The decrease in points was due to this short down from the server side. Tomorrow or maybe today everything will be back to normal.
