Pretty good price on these. I picked up one yesterday to upgrade my MAME machine. Thinking about getting another to split off some stats tasks but can't quite justify that yet.

I have 2 Z600s. More room inside and the cooling solution is better than the T5500s. I like'em.. especially at that price.
Tempting! The only downside is the memory is 6x4gb, which is only 1gb/thread. And it has only 6 slots, so the DIMMs would have to be replaced to increase the RAM. It looks like it needs PC3-10600 DDR3-1333 ECC, which costs about $100 on ebay for 6x8gb.
Well heck. I thought that was too good of deal. It was just a 2 CPU upgrade kit. Not a full system.
These CPU coolers work great for the CPU on the motherboard, better than the Z600. I need to see if they'll fit on the riser CPU and still keep a fan on riser RAM.
Not very familiar with the two chassis. What are the pros/cons of the Dell T5500 vs HP Z600?
I've got a T5500 and a T7500 - the 7500 has a 2xdual hexcore procs and 48Gb Ram. I like them as they are well put together and really very quiet under full load. I'm certainly hoping the HP one is similar.

I just realized the ebay item I linked to was only a 2 CPU upgrade kit, not a complete system. Thought that price was too good to be true. Sorry.
BTW, I still have some RAM available for these systems. 9x 4GB DIMMS I think.
The Z600/Z800 have both CPUs mounted on the motherboard and each CPU uses the same type of CPU cooler, which is proprietary. Another heatsink may fit but the fan has a special plug and I'm not sure whether it will boot if it's not plugged in.Quote:

I went digging around on google for images of the guts of both. I have to say, the layout of the Z600 looks less cramped.

I think the mobo for each model has two PCIe 2.0 16x speed slots but I'm not sure you you'll never fit two GPUs in them. Not sure what's the max length GPU that will fit. Best I recall, both systems have just one 6 pin PCIe power connector. I have a 750Ti w/6 pin PCIe power in a Z600 and 960 in a T3500 (same basic chassis as T5500) but I power both GPUs with a separate PSU to hopefully make the PSUs last as long as possible.Quote:

If it's running WIndows, check the Power Options. It may be running Power Saver mode. If so, that's it. Set it to High Performance
If that's not it, run a monitor to show what the core temps are while BOINC is running. See what core temps and power use are. BTW, I do have the case fans set to like 75% in the BIOS and the case cover must be on to get proper air flow.
yeah, I just hooked a monitor up again and it was set for power saving, so I switched that to high performance. I'll see how it runs today. I'll probably switch it to linux at some point anyway.
It's certainly a little bit louder than my T7500 which I can barely hear even under load.

Thanks. How much bigger than the 5500 is the 7500? Is it significant? Any more room inside for GPUs (length-wise)?

Has anyone rolled a T7500 from Win 7 to Win 10?

Here is the way it works, per Paul Thurrott on windows weekly : You have a win 7 or win 8/8.1 machine. Once you update (free) to win10, that machine is assigned a win10 license/entitlement forever. Then you use the roll back feature to win7 (or 8/8.1) within 30 days. Then if you ever want to go back to win10, even after the July 30 deadline, you can.
So I am going to go through this process for all my win7 machines prior to july 30, and then roll back.

Heh. Unplugging the network would make it difficult to run BOINC. ;) But the way I describe leaves you with win7/8/8.1 as long as you like, while also giving the option to upgrade to win10 for free after the deadline. Just keeping the free upgrade option alive, after it expires.
If you do a free "upgrade" from win7/8.1 to win10, you do not receive an activation (product) key, and no amount of digging will uncover one. M$ determines your computer is allowed to use Win10 by memorizing it's hardware configuration and storing this information on their servers, then creating some sort of secret key code from that. If you change your hardware, you're done. If only you had a product key...but wait! M$ will gladly give you a product key for your "free" "upgrade" for the low price of $100 :)

You are correct zombie67, the keying on the CPU 8-pin is indeed different than that of a PCIe 8-pin, so you can't plug one in to the other by mistake.
The next gen of referbs are offered by the same company. T5600 and T7600. Just about the same price, but with better (Sandy Bridge) 8 core CPUs. I just bought this:

Does anyone have a T5600 or Z620 that could offer any advice or FYI about them? One thing I noticed is on the Z600, a 2nd CPU only required another heatsink/fan while the T5500 required a riser card. Now the Z620 requires a riser for a 2nd CPU but the T5600 doesn't. Am I seeing that correctly?
