Less than 50 minutes until the start! Eat your dinner, grab some beers and let's show the world what this team can accomplish together!

Look like we jumped into the early lead, but P3D is still dropping bunkers into a clear second place.

[H] looks like they are doing the same, but they are fading in the overall.......

    Too soon to tell though.

OCN was third in Swimming but TC's bunkers passed them, but they are putting out twice what TC is at this point.

Right now,4:00am PST, we are solidly in first place by at least 2x in both.

    Re: BOINC Pentathlon 2018

    Day 1 - 05 May 2018

Like the thirsty in the desert, the hungry in front of the buffet or Sebastian Vettel in the starting line-up, all experience the same in that moment before the start. At last, the time has come. However, in an instant, intense concentration is required but also intense enjoyment second by second.

At last the time has come, the 9th BOINC Pentathlon has started. The organisers, just to be cruel, didn’t allow the teams any warm up period. Both disciplines, Marathon and Swimming which will drain our crunchers’ energy the most, are featuring at the start of the programme. That requires early clever resource management.

Last year, Planet 3DNow! (P3D) won at Swimming ahead of Gridcoin and SETI.USA (SUSA). SUSA won the Marathon ahead of P3D and Gridcoin. Let’s wait and see if P3D and SUSA will be able to repeat their successes from the previous year.

    Swimming – Universe@Home
As is usual, the first few hours are shaped by bunker explosions which generate large displacements of earth. Punctually, right at the start, SUSA torched their whole arsenal and thus placed themselves at the very top. The green water rats from P3D are currently trying to not only match the pace but are succeeding in catching up.

Behind them, Team China are holding on to #3, however, only just ahead of Overclock.net (OCN) at #4. [H]ard|OCP have just pushed up to #5 past BOINC.Italy (#6) and Chinese Dream (#7). Two teams from China at the Pentathlon in the Top10? I don’t believe we’ve seen that before. However, currently creeping up are CNT (#8), returnees BOINC@Poland (#9), RKN (#10) and SG (#11) with a mind to change all that. Rank 11 for SG is already a near catastrophe which calls for a fast intake of antihistamines to ward off allergy.to water

With #12, TAAT might not altogether be dissatisfied in the end, but it’s far too early for such sentiments. Also afraid of water is the rooster of L'Alliance Francophone (AF) who can’t be satisfied with #13. At #14, BOINC@AUSTRALIA started well off the blocks whilst Meisterkuehler.de (MK) at #15 continue to sit back. Following behind by a slim margin are USA (#16), Crunching@EVGA (#17), Ukraine (#18) and BOINCstats at #19.

Rank 20 is currently contested by LITOMYSL and SETIKAH@KOREA (SETIKAH). Nevertheless, just behind, we find tight duels where we can’t make anything out with the naked eye to confirm who has managed to get the tip of their finger in front. At #22, UK BOINC Team and AMD Users are tousling and at #24 there is a fight between Das Kartell and Rookie LTT Forums. Whilst BOINC@Pfalz (#26) are still looking undecided, the duel for #27 betweenTeam2ch and BOINC@MIXI is in full flight. The last team in the water are U.S. Army at #29 which doesn’t surprise us at all since it’s not the Navy.

    Marathon - NumberFields@home
The Marathon leads the teams to NumberFields@home, a premiere for the project and thus also for our teams. Just as they did at Swimming, SUSA moved like their house was on fire and immediately placed themselves at the top of the field. It looks like their tactic is to gain as much distance as possible and then to try and manage that. It seemed to work last year but what about this year?

[H]ard|OCP (#3) just allowed P3D (#2) to overtake them but despite that, both teams appear to gain ground towards the front of the field Team China are currently unable to keep up with the tempo of the top trio but it’s still enough to keep SG (#5) behind them. Though the German sleepy heads have managed to push past OCN (#6), TAAT (#7) and AF (#8) in the last few hours, it doesn’t yet look convincing what the blue-yellows are delivering today.

CNT (#9) have just catapulted past Chinese Dream (#10) and will now try and close the gap towards the top. USA (#11) and RKN (#12) are following behind. Both have managed to separate a little from Crunching@EVGA (#13) and BOINC.Italy (#14). MK, #15 need to thaw out as don’t look satisfactory at the moment. Ukraine (#16) have already got MK in their sights but must beware not to get caught out by AMD Users (#17).

Das Kartell at #18 are making good progress, followed by BOINCstats (#19), UK BOINC Team (#20), BOINC@MIXI (#21) and BOINC@AUSTRALIA at #22. At the end of the field are a bunch who will have to decide to either head towards the top or treat this as a nice excursion. Team2ch (#23) have just pushed past BOINC@Pfalz (#24) by a whisker. Crystal Dream (#25) and BOINC@Poland (#26) follow behind. The Poles seem to concentrate on Swimming, let’s wait and see how that’ll work out for them. LITOMYSL (#27), SETIKAH@KOREA (#28) and LTT Forums (#29) are currently bringing up the rear on the Marathon track.

    Overall
It’s to be expected that the overall standings aren’t very meaningful after only 11 hours but It’s still fun to take a look. SUSA have taken their place at the top followed by P3D. Currently in the Bronze position are Team China who are thus confirming their intention for this year. [H]ard|OCP (#4) and OCN (#5) are both finding themselves behind by just a small margin. Both are beginning to struggle to keep their eye on the front runners and pushing up from behind are SG (#6) who can’t really be happy with their current performance.

Both moving along at #7 are Chinese Dream and CNT, only just ahead of TAAT (#9) and BOINC.Italy (#10). In addition, AF at #11 will not be able to take a satisfied bite out of the baguette and it’s also best not to tangle with RKN (#12). Currently on the move in no-man’s-land are USA (#13) but we all know that that could quickly change.

There might be a quick end to the flirt at #14 between Crunching@EVGA and MK with an interruption by BOINC@Poland (#16) or Ukraine (#17). Behind follow BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#18), BOINCstats (#19), AMD Users (#20), Das Kartell (#21) and UK BOINC Team (#22). At the bottom of the field are currently LITOMYSL (#23), BOINC@MIXI (#24), SETIKAH (also #24), Team2ch (#26), BOINC@Pfalz (#27), LTT Forums (#28), Crystal Dream (#29) and U.S. Army at #30.

One thing is currently clear and that is that nothing is clear.

And once again we are drilled with questions:
    - When will SG wake up from its lethargy?
    - Are the Chinese stirring up the Pentathlon this year?
    - Can SUSA still be stopped?

Questions upon questions. Nothing is sure, except for one thing: It remains exciting at the Boinc-Pentathlon.

    Re: BOINC Pentathlon 2018

    Day 2 - 06 May 2018

On the second day, after the gun smoke has cleared, the individual power of each team is coming to the fore. It is now apparent which tempo the teams feel they can maintain over the distance, ensuring the heads in their strategy departments are smouldering.

    Marathon
SUSA’s margin grows and grows and grows and grows and grows and P3D must now decide if an attempt at Gold is still worthwhile or better to try and secure #2. However, my dear readers, the marathon is long and arduous and it’s far too early for preliminary decisions. Thus, SG have slowly but steadily crunched their way to #3 and will employ all available means to rough up the green planet.

The same goes for Team China (#5). The Chinese have made up a lot of ground so that OCP should slowly be getting concerned about keeping #4. Behind them, TAAT are holding steady at #6 although under pressure from OCN (#7). The gap behind is quite considerable. AF at #8 might have motivation problems but a glance to the rear should quickly fix that. CNT (#9), RKN (#10) and MK (#11) have decided not to make it easy for the Francophones. Especially Meisterkühler have been running their soles red hot In the last few hours.

As the Marathon will be our steady companion in the next few days, let’s take a quick look at Swimming. There’s not a dry patch to be seen which doesn’t mean that the heat hasn’t been turned up.

    Swimming
Here too, SUSA are ahead of P3D. However, the margin isn’t quite as large as at the Marathon. The little green men need to increase power or face swallowing SUSA’s wastewater. A haze over the water is obscuring the battle for #3. No, it’s not Fog – the fog of doom. The tension has reached boiling point: OCP are valiantly holding on to #3 but Team China (#4), OCN (#5) as well as SG (#6) are following in their wake. Here, no decision has yet been made, hopefully not too much water will evaporate as that would leave them swimming on dry land.

Will RKN (#7) be able to enter the fray? Going by my experience I rather doubt it but in the Pentathlon, nothing is impossible. The Germans are at least able to keep their distance to BOINC@Poland (#8) which the Poles are failing to do with TAAT (#9) and CNT (#10). It’s red alert east of the river Oder.

AF (#11) are not keeping up the pace but are also not put under enough pressure by BOINC.Italy (#12), Chinese Dream (#13), MK (#14) and BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#15). USA at #16 are keeping Crunching@EVGA (#17) at bay whereby there’s hardly any pressure from Ukraine (#18), BOINCstats (#19) and LITOMYSL (#20). The Czechs have got LTT Forums (#21) and Das Kartell (#22) breathing down their neck. It’s not yet clear to what extend SETIKAH (#23) and AMD Users (#24) will be able to muscle in. However, we shouldn’t dismiss that possibility.

    Overall
There are some noticeable changes in the overall standings. Even though SUSA and P3D are leading the field, there are quite a few skirmishes behind them. OCP are holding on to #3 and with a glance in their rearview mirror can’t miss the angry looking boys and girls from SG who are slowly making up ground.

Team China (#5) have pushed past OCN (#6) and will now try and light the fire under the German eagle’s bottom. Whilst TAAT hold on to #7, RKN (#8) and CNT (#9) are involved in a little skirmish in which AF (also at #9) decided to meddle. MK were able to improve their rank to #11 and have thereby overtaken Chinese Dream (#12) and BOINC.Italy (#13) and at the same time kept USA (#14) at a distance.

Crunching@EVGA (#15) are continuing to buzz about in Neverland and able to enjoy the show in front and behind. BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#16) are currently engaged in a duel with BOINC@Poland (#17), one point difference is hardly anything at all. Are Ukraine (#18) willing and able to step in? At the moment there doesn’t appear to be much danger to the rear as AMD Users (#19) and the duo of Das Kartell and BOINCstats at #20, LITOMYSL (#22) and UK BOINC Team (#23) are already trailing quite a bit behind.

BOINC@MIXI (#24) are trying to keep LTT Forums (#25) off their back and will be keeping a watchful eye out for 2ch (#26). At the end of the field, BOINC@Pfalz (#27), Crystal Dream (also at #27), USArmy (#28) and BOINC Confederation (#29) have all managed to collect some points.

And where do we go from here? Questions over questions:
    - At Swimming, will Team China take over #3?
    - At the Marathon, can P3D put SUSA under pressure?
    - And when will AF put aside their cheese and wine and start crunching?

It remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

    Re: BOINC Pentathlon 2018

    Day 3 - 07 May 2018

The third day of the competition is under way with one or two warning lights flashing in the last few hours. Everybody is counting, calculating and speculating diligently. How best to distribute the computing power? Await the next discipline or hope for a chance in either Marathon or Swimming? The decisions now taken will be captured in the result on 19 May 18.

    Marathon
The logic is in the nature of the long distance race like the Marathon which makes sudden twists and turns rarer the longer the race endures. This is being demonstrated right at this moment but with the announcement of further projects the situation will get really interesting. That’s when resources will be reallocated und thus open up new chances for the brave amongst the competitors. SUSA continue to lead the field and attempt to control their margin. P3D are keeping at Silver and have made up some ground. That’s when there could be danger from [H] (#3). They’ve caught up in the last few hours and are actually the fastest in the field.

It’s not only SG (#4) who will hope that this is only a momentary flicker. Team China (#5) too have surely not written off a medal just yet. The teams following behind will most likely not feature when the medals are being distributed but that’s far from sure. TAAT (#6) are currently weakening which allows OCN (#7) and AF (#8) constant nibbles at the margin. CNT can be found at only #9 but the Czechs have shown in the past that they are game for surprise attacks.

MK have got their work cut out to retain Rank 10 as RKN (#11), USA (#12) and Chinese Dreams (#13) are catching up with mighty dynamic strides. Crunching@EVGA (#14) are apparently not interested and prefer to play with BOINC.Italy (#15). AMD Users appear to have taken a look and decided to join them as they are visibly catching up. Ukraine can still be found at #17 but BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#18) have made up ground. The next few hours will show if they’ve got the stamina. Das Kartell had to let the Australians pass and are currently holding on to #19.

The Top20 is completed by UK BOINC Team, clearly ahead of MIXI (#21), LITOMYSL (#22), BOINCstats (#23), 2ch (#24) and Crystal Dream (#25). An unexpected turn of events shows the U.S. Army at #26 currently running out of steam. Or can we expect a covert attack? LTT Forums (#27) must hope that that’s not going to happen as they’ve slowly managed to get into attack position. BOINC@Pfalz, BOINC@Poland, SETIKAH and BOINC Confederation are closing the field from #28 - #31.

    Swimming
A powerful wave raged through the water in the past few hours. SUSA (#1) and P3D (#2) barely noticed the effect but the teams behind were forced to swallow quite a bit of water. The cause of all this must be due to a Gallic magic potion. This catapulted AF to #3 which hit [H] (#4), Team China (#5) and SG (#6) between the eyes. We’ve now got to wait and see if AF can maintain enough supplies or if all vats have been emptied.

OCN can now be found at #7, still in the wake of SG. Can they hold position? At least their advantage over RKN (#8) and BOINC@Poland (#9) is clearly visible. The duo are close but the Poles are just beginning to build momentum. A glance at the Overall Standings also shows that they are apparently putting all their bets on Swimming. CNT and TAAT are having a bit of a tiff over #10 and don’t need to hurry as AUSTRALIA (#12) and Italy (#13) are some distance away. The Australians have just put on a quick burst of speed and thus not only overtaken the Italians but also Chinese Dream (#14) and MK (#15).

The next changes are onwards from #20. LTT Forums have crunched to that rank and in so doing, kicked LITOMYSL out of the Top20. Behind, SETIKAH have pushed up to #22, past Das Kartell. In the meantime, 2ch continue to try and separate from UK BOINC Team to secure #25.

    Overall
There’s currently no change on the podium. SUSA ahead of P3D and [H]. Even though all is calm and placid here, the broth continues to boil in the ranks behind and if not careful could burn the fingers of the first three.

With their surprise torpedo launch in Swimming, AF advanced to #4 and did not just catch SG (#5) napping. Team China (#6) continue to keep pace with both and hope to benefit from the slipstream. Further on, OCN (#7) are giving it everything not to be left behind but that won’t be easy. TAAT appear secure at #8 but the duel between RKN and CNT at #9 is not only exciting but could result in mobilising hidden resources.

The best team outside of the Top10 are MK at #11. However, the temperature is slowly rising in the Cool team as Chinese Dream (#12) are creeping up. BOINC.Italy (#13) are already victims of the small dragon who doesn’t yet appear to have satisfied its hunger. On the other hand, the Italians must share #13 with USA and it won’t take long to decide who has the upper hand. BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#15) succeeded in separating from Crunching@EVGA (#16); let’s wait and see when both are once again drawn to each other.

BOINC@Poland at #17 must step up a notch if they are to improve their ranking. The Poles are demonstrating an exciting tactic by investing all in Swimming at the moment. Neighbours from Ukraine (#18) are moving along without haste but not improving their standing. Behind them we find AMD Users at #19. BOINCstats and Das Kartell continue to fight over #20. Whilst LITOMYSL (#22) are trying everything to enable a jump into the Top20, UK BOINC Team (#23) and LTT Forums (#24) will find that a bit more difficult. At #25 we currently see BOINC@MIXI followed by 2ch (#26), SETIKAH (#27), Crystal Dream (#28), U.S. Army and BOINC@Pfalz (#29) as well as BOINC Confederation (#30).

You will already have asked yourselves:

    - Can AF rake in precious metal once again?
    - Are [H]ard|OCP going to retaliate at Swimming?
    - When will SG attack at the Marathon?

You see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.
