World Community Grid: Announcing the Africa Rainfall Project

What if your computer could run weather simulations that could help farmers in Africa successfully grow their crops? We're excited to announce the Africa Rainfall Project, our first project in partnership with The Weather Company.

Re: World Community Grid: Announcing the Africa Rainfall Project

Until now, I have been able to keep most of my threads supplied with Africa tasks using an updater. But over the past day or so, everything has dried up. Is anyone else seeing this? I want to make sure that they stopped sending work, opposed to something going wrong on my end.

Edit: It's not just me. They have a problem and are working on it.

Check this out. The dude already has a 50 year badge! I've been banging on it pretty hard, with 10-15 machines, and a aggressive updater. Even so, just now hitting 7 years.

WUs are getting a little thin here. Seeing "Tasks are committed to other platforms" on all my Linux machines. Windows machine (1) is still getting a few. I'm struggling to get to 5 years. With a 20 year goal this is going to take a while. The guy/girl that got the 50 year badge? Amazing!

So is using a Linux machine still possible here? I'm trying to switch to this but it looks like I'm not going to get any work.

Yes, all three OSs are supported for the Africa Rainfall Project. But work is extremely scarce. They dole out small amounts at random times all day long. So use an updater script. Set it as close to 121 seconds as possible, without going under.

Keep my cache high or low?

Re: World Community Grid: Announcing the Africa Rainfall Project

I kept something like 1+1 day. But I selected only the one sub-project at WCG. Allow work from other sub-projects was un-checked. Then I selected a completely different project at zero resource share, to keep any idle threads busy. This way WCG was always asking for work, and never filled up on something else.

Just some thoughts: check your event log to make sure that when BOINC contacts the project

    1) It is actually asking for work every time (make sure that your cache of all tasks is not full)
    2) It is asking specifically for Africa Rainfall Project
    3) It is not getting a "request too soon since last request" message
    4) It is asking every 121+ seconds without going under
