    Different GPU models

Any knowledge or thoughts about whether 2 different GPU models made by the same company differ only by the ROM they are flashed with? Is it possible a GPU model that comes in a 4GB and 8GB model are actually identical hardware with the same amount of physical memory but one ROM is programmed use only 4GB and the other ROM is programmed to use 8GB?

I would believe that to be a reasonable assumption. When I worked for HP (back when they made electronic test instrumentation) we had oscilloscope models that had single shot bandwidths between 500MHz and 2GHz. Within a "family" all of the models had the same guts inside but each model was programmed for a different maximum sample rate. The customer had the ability to purchase what best met their requirements. If you wanted to soar with eagles you had to pay the price.
