dell dimension 3000 cheap dual core cpu upgrade?

the couple dell desktops i have are all the same either having a celeron 2.5 ghz cpu or a regular p4 2.8ghz cpu
whats the chance i could put some of the socket 478 1.6- 3.06 ghz dual core cpus in them?

heres what cpu-z pulls from the machine i use daily
    ModelDell 0R8060
    BIOS Dell Computer Corporation - A02 - 11/08/2004
    CPU Socket Socket 478 mPGA
North Bridge Intel i865P/PE/G/i848P rev A2
    South Bridge Intel 82801EB (ICH5) rev 02

iirc as long as i stay under 533mhz bus speed it should work just fine

i can get those dual core cpus off ebay for 3-10 bucks each
worthwhile for as cheap as it is?

First thing you need to do is make sure the Dell BIOS supports the chip, regardless of if it's the same socket or not. Highly unlikely it will, but there's always that chance. Check the specs for your model system at the Dell website.

Here's some info that should cover that board, or at least that chipset, and it looks like on a P4 is its capabilities... http://download.intel.com/design/chi...s/25252304.pdf

browsing threw that real fast it looks like it will work , and for 3 bucks im not going to complian if it doesnt so im just going to buy one of those cheap dual core cpu's and stick it in and see what happens.
i hope it works as this computer is being retired to crunching duty only soon as i get my new computer up and running , cpu crunching on this computer is dredfully slow

then again now that im done buying up all the parts i need for my car maybe i just just buy 1-2 amd fx8350 or amd a8 6600 combos to stick in those towers for cheap
the wife might not be to happy about that though

lmfao , that wont work soon as im done with the camaro i have to put her toyota in the garage and install a supercharger , dam toyota wont do 40mph going over the mountians here , its actually kind of dangerous as going that slow ur liable to get run the hell over by a big truck.

so the next project is adapting an eaton m62 supercharger to the toyotas lil 1.5L 4cyl in hopes it will maintian the 65mph speed limit on the mountian roads around here

well forget going with the dual core t6400 in the dells
for some reason the amd machine at work fried so my boss brought a machine from his house and it has the same cpu i was looking to upgrade my dells to well the 2.8 p4 is faster to complete a wu , the only difference is the dual core can do 2 at once
so for 165$'s im just going to update the dells with some fx 6300 6 core cpu's

If you haven't already, you might also want to consider adding a GPU or two, especially the PCI variety which work in most desktops. If the Dell has a standard sized power supply unit (PSU) you might need to upgrade it as well but even an low end GPU could double your output and a ~$100 GPU could probably triple or quadruple it. The PCI boards can do the same w/o a PSU updatge but they are a little harder to find. Then again, the recent Pentathlon has shown us that CPU power is still king.
