Does anyone have a recommendation on a non OEM fan replacement for an xfx 5970? I just lost my 2nd one in 2 months and I'm getting tired of replacing the crappy oem variety.

Sorry to hear that Al.
Looks like coolers for the HD 5970 were a very niche product. I did find one source for the Arctic Cooling Accelero XTREME 5970 ($79.99 +Shipping) ---> http://www.aerocooler.com/product_in...oducts_id=3691
An alternative to the Accelero would be a custom water cooling solution. Swiftech has some good hardware if your willing to bear the cost.
MCW82 Universal GPU waterblock (x2) - List: $56.95 / Low Price: $46.99
MCP35X 12 VDC Pump - List: $99.99 / Low Price: $84.99
MCP35X Reservoir - List: $29.95 / Low Price: $27.99
MCR220-QP Quiet Power 2X120mm Radiator - List: $53.95 / Low Price: $39.99
Akasa Viper 120x25mm PWM Fan (x2) - $12.99
Assorted Accessories: $40.00~$100.00 (Guessing here)
What's up with AMD stock fans anyway? I had 1 of 2 go bad for my 4870s, 2 of 3 go bad with my 5870s. Nervous with my 7970s...
True but WC done right would definitely extend the life of any GPU. Also those Swiftech water blocks will work on most GPUs except the 79xx series. So long term you can re-purpose them in the future. Also you can extend the water cooling to include the CPU at a future time.
Yeah, its a known problem. At least since the 4xxx cards. If you plan on keeping any ATI/AMD long term, then it would be a good idea to buy an aftermarket cooler(s) in advance of its need.

Possibly better since it seems to be OE, but not OEM.
Thanks JPM. I may order one of those for when the next one fails. I've scoured the internet and water cooling is the only thing available for the 5970. I did find an Xtreme (mentioned above) on ebay. It's listed as not working. I sent a note to the seller to find out what's broken. If it's the fans, there are replacements. It would give me another project to finish...and the list gets longer.
Any Fan you order that's supposed to be a replacement you may need to modify to get it to fit right. I ordered one from China that was supposed to be an exact replacement for my 5870 & I needed to modify the base of it quite a bit to fit right & turn freely. It has been running for 6 months or so now off & on without any problems though ...

The last one I got had to have the wire retainer modified, narrowed a bit, so it would seat correctly. It worked great for a couple of months then the rattle started. In all honesty, all of the exact replacements seem to have this same issue. I guess it's an exact replacement as long as you're willing to mod it a bit. As I'm finding out, there's not much choice here unfortunately.
