Re: What are you listening to?

    Dido - Thank You (Acoustic)

My tea's gone cold, I'm wondering why
I got out of bed at all
The morning rain clouds up my window
And I can't see at all

And even if I could it'd all be gray
But your picture on my wall
It reminds me that it's not so bad
    It's not so bad

I drank too much last night, got bills to pay
My head just feels in pain
I missed the bus and there'll be hell today
    I'm late for work again

And even if I'm there, they'll all imply
That I might not last the day
And then you call me and it's not so bad
    It's not so bad

And I want to thank you
For giving me the best day of my life
And, oh oh, just to be with you
Is having the best day of my life

Push the door, I'm home at last
And I'm soaking through and through
And then you handed me a towel
And all I see is you

And even if my house falls down now
    I wouldn't have a clue
    Because you're near me

And I want to thank you
For giving me the best day of my life
And, oh, just to be with you
Is having the best day of my life

And I want to thank you
For giving me the best day of my life
And, oh, just to be with you
Is having the best day of my life

Besides the songs that got airplay,

    Tom Sawyer
    Working Man
    The Spirit of Radio
    Limelight
    Freewill
    Subdivisions
    Closer to the Heart

some of my other favorites are:

    Superconductor
    Red Barchetta
    The Trees
    Second Nature
    Prime Mover
    Mission
    Losing It
    The Pass
    Presto

But most of all, I really like 2112.

1976, one song, one side of a vinyl LP, 20+ minutes.
Similar to the oppression of the individual in Ayn Rand's novella Anthem, the images in 2112 have stuck with me for nearly 40 years.
I've always felt this song needed a mini video, much like Michael Jackson's Thriller.
But RUSH was not that main stream, and the song came out well before music videos.
It is very rarely performed in its entirety in concert, only the well known parts that were edited for radio.

Here is the audio in its entirety, without a concept or performing video.

    "2112"

"I lie awake, staring out at the bleakness of Megadon.
City and sky become one, merging into a single plane,
a vast sea of unbroken grey. The Twin Moons,
just two pale orbs as they trace their way across the steely sky.
I used to think I had a pretty good life here,
just plugging into my machine for the day,
then watching Templevision or reading a Temple Paper in the evening."

"My friend Jon always said it was nicer here than
under the atmospheric domes of the Outer Planets.
We have had peace since 2062, when the surviving planets
were banded together under the Red Star of the Solar Federation.
The less fortunate gave us a few new moons.
"I believed what I was told. I thought it was a good life,
I thought I was happy. Then I found something that changed it all..."

    -- Anonymous, 2112

    I. Overture
    (Instrumental)

"And the meek shall inherit the earth."

    II. The Temples of Syrinx

... "The massive grey walls of the Temples rise from the
heart of every Federation city. I have always been awed
by them, to think that every single facet of every life is
regulated and directed from within! Our books, our music,
our work and play are all looked after by the benevolent
    wisdom of the priests"...

    We've taken care of everything
The words you hear the songs you sing
The pictures that give pleasure to your eyes
It's one for all and all for one
    We work together common sons
Never need to wonder how or why

We are the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx
Our great computers fill the hallowed halls
We are the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx
All the gifts of life are held within our walls

Look around this world we made
    Equality our stock in trade
Come and join the Brotherhood of Man
Oh what a nice contented world
    Let the banners be unfurled
Hold the Red Star proudly high in hand

We are the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx
Our great computers fill the hallowed halls.
We are the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx
All the gifts of life are held within our walls.

    III. Discovery

... "Behind my beloved waterfall, in the little room that was
hidden beneath the cave, I found it. I brushed away the
dust of the years, and picked it up, holding it reverently in
my hands. I had no idea what it might be, but it was
    beautiful" ...
... "I learned to lay my fingers across the wires, and to turn
the keys to make them sound differently. As I struck the
wires with my other hand, I produced my first harmonious
sounds, and soon my own music! How different it could
be from the music of the Temples! I can't wait to tell the
    priests about it!" ...

What can this strange device be?
When I touch it, it gives forth a sound
It's got wires that vibrate and give music
What can this thing be that I found?

See how it sings like a sad heart
And joyously screams out its pain
Sounds that build high like a mountain
Or notes that fall gently like rain

I can't wait to share this new wonder
The people will all see its light
Let them all make their own music
The Priests praise my name on this night

    IV. Presentation

... "In the sudden silence as I finished playing, I looked up
to a circle of grim, expressionless faces. Father Brown
rose to his feet, and his somnolent voice echoed
throughout the silent Temple Hall." ...
... "Instead of the grateful joy that I expected, they were
words of quiet rejection! Instead of praise, sullen
dismissal. I watched in shock and horror as Father Brown
ground my precious instrument to splinters beneath his
    feet"...

    I know it's most unusual
    To come before you so
But I've found an ancient miracle
I thought that you should know

    Listen to my music
And hear what it can do
There's something here as strong as life
I know that it will reach you

Yes, we know it's nothing new
It's just a waste of time
We have no need for ancient ways
    The world is doing fine

    Another toy will help destroy
    The elder race of man
    Forget about your silly whim
    It doesn't fit the plan

    I can't believe you're saying
These things just can't be true
Our world could use this beauty
Just think what we might do

    Listen to my music
And hear what it can do
There's something here as strong as life
I know that it will reach you

    Don't annoy us further
We have our work to do
    Just think about the average
What use have they for you?

    Another toy will help destroy
    The elder race of man
    Forget about your silly whim
    It doesn't fit the plan

    V. Oracle: The Dream

... "I guess it was a dream, but even now it all seems so
vivid to me. Clearly yet I see the beckoning hand of the
oracle as he stood at the summit of the staircase" ...

... "I see still the incredible beauty of the sculptured cities
and the pure spirit of man revealed in the lives and works
of this world. I was overwhelmed by both wonder and
understanding as I saw a completely different way to life,
a way that had been crushed by the Federation long ago. I
saw now how meaningless life had become with the loss
    of all these things" ...

I wandered home though the silent streets
And fell into a fitful sleep
Escape to realms beyond the night
Dream can't you show me the light?

I stand atop a spiral stair
    An oracle confronts me there
He leads me on light years away
    Through astral nights, galactic days

I see the works of gifted hands
That grace this strange and wondrous land
I see the hand of man arise
With hungry mind and open eyes

They left the planet long ago
The elder race still learn and grow
Their power grows with purpose strong
To claim the home where they belong
Home, to tear the Temples down...
    Home, to change..

    VI. Soliloquy

... "I have not left this cave for days now, it has become
my last refuge in my total despair. I have only the music of
the waterfall to comfort me now. I can no longer live
under the control of the Federation, but there is no other
place to go. My last hope is that with my death I may pass
into the world of my dream, and know peace at last."

The sleep is still in my eyes
The dream is still in my head
I heave a sigh and sadly smile
And lie a while in bed
I wish that it might come to pass
Not fade like all my dreams

Just think of what my life might be
In a world like I have seen
    I don't think I can carry on
Carry on this cold and empty life
    Oh...noo!

My spirits are low in the depths of despair
    My lifeblood spills over..

    VII. Grand Finale

    (The elder race returns!)
    (The temples are torn down)
(The oppression of the Federation is lifted)

Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation
Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation
Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation
    We have assumed control.
    We have assumed control.
    We have assumed control.
I used to think RUSH was way ahead of their time.
But it was more of brilliance of the musicians they have.
There is no band that sounded that way and nobody that even tried to copy them it was so unique.

If anyone would attempt to mimic Geddy's voice they'd probably hurt themselves.
    They are true musical technicians.
    They thrive on live performances.

    I enjoy the cerebral lyrics.
You can count the love songs they perform on the fingers of an amputated hand.

    The Pass

Proud swagger out of the schoolyard
    Waiting for the world's applause
    Rebel without a conscience
    Martyr without a cause

    Static on your frequency
    Electrical storm in your veins
    Raging at unreachable glory
    Straining at invisible chains

And now you're trembling on a rocky ledge
Staring down into a heartless sea
    Can't face life on a razor's edge
Nothing's what you thought it would be

All of us get lost in the darkness
Dreamers learn to steer by the stars
All of us do time in the gutter
Dreamers turn to look at the cars
turn around and turn around and turn around
Turn around and walk the razor's edge
    Don't turn your back
And slam the door on me

It's not as if this barricade
    Blocks the only road
It's not as if you're all alone
    In wanting to explode

    Someone set a bad example
    Made surrender seem all right
The act of a noble warrior
Who lost the will to fight

And now you're trembling on a rocky ledge
Staring down into a heartless sea
Done with life on a razor's edge
Nothing's what you thought it would be

All of us get lost in the darkness
Dreamers learn to steer by the stars
All of us do time in the gutter
Dreamers turn to look at the cars
turn around and turn around and turn around
Turn around and walk the razor's edge
    Don't turn your back
And slam the door on me

    No hero in your tragedy
    No daring in your escape
    No salutes for your surrender
    Nothing noble in your fate
    Christ, what have you done?

All of us get lost in the darkness
Dreamers learn to steer by the stars
All of us do time in the gutter
Dreamers turn to look at the cars
turn around and turn around and turn around
Turn around and walk the razor's edge
Turn around and walk the razor's edge
Turn around and walk the razor's edge
    Don't turn your back
And slam the door on me

"Since I Fell for You" Lenny Welch

    When you just give love
    And never get love
    You'd better let love depart
    I know it so
    And yet I know
I can't get you out of my heart

    You
Made me leave my happy home
You took my love and now you're gone
    Since I fell for you

    Love
    Brings such misery and pain
I guess I'll never be the same
    Since I fell for you

    Well it's too bad
    And it's too sad
But I'm in love with you

    You love me
    Then you snub me
    But what can I do
I'm still in love with you

    Well I
Guess I'll never see the light
I get the blues most every night
    Since I fell for you

    Since I fell for you...

Re: What are you listening to?

Nice videos people, I will try one I like.

    "Come Home"

    [Verse 1]
    Hello world
    Hope you're listening
    Forgive me if I’m young
    For speaking out of turn
    There’s someone I’ve been missing
I think that they could be
    The better half of me
They’re in the wrong place trying to make it right
    But I’m tired of justifying
    So I say to you..

    [Chorus]
    Come home
    Come home
Cause I’ve been waiting for you
    For so long
    For so long
Right now there's a war between the vanities
But all I see is you and me
The fight for you is all I’ve ever known
    So come home
    Oh

    [Verse 2]
I get lost in the beauty
    Of everything I see
The world ain’t half as bad
As they paint it to be
    If all the sons,
    All the daughters
    Stopped to take it in
Well hopefully the hate subsides and the love can begin
    It might start now, yeah
Well maybe I’m just dreaming out loud
    Until then...

    [Chorus]
    Come home
    Come home
Cause I’ve been waiting for you
    For so long
    For so long
Right now there's a war between the vanities
But all I see is you and me
The fight for you is all I’ve ever known
    Ever known
    So come home
    Oh

    [Interlude]
    Everything I can’t be
    Is everything you should be
And that’s why I need you here
    Everything I can’t be
    Is everything you should be
And that’s why I need you here
    So hear this now...

    [Chorus]
    Come home
    Come home
Cause I’ve been waiting for you
    For so long
    For so long
Right now there's a war between the vanities
But all I see is you and me
The fight for you is all I’ve ever known
    Ever known
    So come home
    Come home
Friends are like diamonds and diamonds are forever

Re: What are you listening to?

I was about 14 in the early 80s when A Flock of Seagulls made their splash. So awesome! I was *so* into New Wave at the time. That and D.C. Hard Core. I was all over the place. Still am, I guess.

This is so awesome on so many levels!

    1) It's just a fun song!

    2) Jennifer Connelly in a wife-beater dancing/roller-skating!

    3) An 80's montage!

A Flock Of Seagulls - Space Age Love Song

    Lyrics
    I saw your eyes
    And you made me smile
    For a little while
    I was falling in love

    I saw your eyes
    And you touched my mind
    Although it took a while
    I was falling in love

    I saw your eyes
    And you made me cry
    And for a little while
    I was falling in love

    I was falling in love

    Falling in love
    Falling in love
    Falling in love
    Falling in love

    I love that song too.
As far as the girl, that reminds me of some of my ex girlfriends(friends) that you knew from day one, nothing was going to happen,
but, you were going to have a great time for a short while.
So what do we do ? Enjoy the good times with girls like that for a short time and don't trip.
    Huh Shandia ? right ?
To give this band some justice, here is a video of them live early 80's.
I remember smoking bowls back then and listening to this.
It's just good fun stuff !
