    Re: BOINC Pentathlon 2018

    Day 4 - 08 May 2018

Whilst starting into the fourth day of the contest, our teams received glad tidings that the Sprint would commence in less than 3 days. The short notice period doesn’t give the teams much time to think and the conditions at the project Rosetta will contribute to allowing for fascinating tactical variations. It’s not possible to determine how the announcement of the 3rd discipline will impact on the races already underway. At least, not yet.

    Swimming
P3D are trying to use the water to convert Silver into Gold. They could catch up on their margin to SUSA at the top could but it will be demanding. On the other hand, the fight for Bronze is in full swing. The last place on the podium is being defended rather viciously and noisily by the snappy beak of AF’s rooster. China (#4), [H] (#5) and SG (#6) are showing considerable respect and keep well away. SG are slowly managing to reduce the distance to [H] but must do more if they are aiming for precious metal.

Not unsurprisingly, OCN have had to break it off which isn’t something to be ashamed of. They have at least managed to distance themselves further from their pursuers. They are being led by CNT (#8), RKN (#9) and BOINC@Poland (#10). TAAT (#11) are fighting tooth and nail to reduce the distance to the Poles but they are not quite succeeding in closing the gap. BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#12) and BOINC.Italy (#13) have managed to hold on to their ranks. Nevertheless, Meisterkühler (#14) put pressure on the Italians once they had pushed Chinese Dream down to #15.

A considerable interim spurt has catapulted Crunching@EVGA to #16 with the result that USA now find themselves at #17. However, the margin is still very small so that a counterattack could be successful at any time. Only at #22 do we then notice a change in the positions. AMD Users have swum past SETIKAH (#23) and Das Kartell (#24) to #22. BOINC@MIXI (#26) have shown that a good interim spurt brings results by relegating UK BOINC Team to #27.

    Marathon
Now this race has moved to the long edge, it has become a lot quieter. The positions have been taken and the time has come to try and estimate what is still possible and how large the risk is going to be when resources need to be redeployed. Using the correct strategy here will be the cause of many more position changes. SUSA are succeeding well in defending their position at the top. It won’t be easy for the green hunter of P3D (#2) to bring the American eagle out of the sky. The fight for Bronze is contested once again by [H] (#3), SG (#4) and Team China (#5). The Teutones are currently weakening, allowing the Chinese to catch up strongly.

The fight for #5 is also a three-way skirmish. TAAT are currently holding the best cards in this fight but OCN (#6) and especially CNT (#7) are catching up. AF have become the victim of the breach by the Czechs. Only at #9 and not looking as if there is any more in it. A lot of resources are tied up at Swimming, the margin already quite noticeable and now MK (#10) are closing in.

They’ve taken notice of each other in the ranks behind but there’s not much evidence of an attack. It’s at the other end of the field where we find the action. 2ch have crunched themselves to rank 22, straight past LITOMYSL (#23) and BOINCstats (#24).
Unimpressed, Crystal Dream seem to drift along in a dream at #25. However, it would be better not to dream too much as the margin to LTT Forums (#26) isn’t quite so substantial. The same applies to U.S. Army (#27) and SETIKAH (#28). BOINC@Pfalz (#29), BOINC@Poland (#30) and BOINC Confederation (#31) are completing the picture.

    Overall
The contests for Bronze especially are having a massive impact on the Overall Standings. The rankings are constantly on the move which isn’t going to change any time soon. But let’s first look at what hasn’t changed: SUSA ahead of P3D. Even [H] are able to hang on to Bronze but behind, Team China (#4) succeeded in overtaking the colourful rooster of AF (#5) and are giving it their all to close the gap to the top. We discover SG (#6) just one point behind AF and three points behind TC. Not really a good position for this traditional team in blue-yellow colours but not all is lost yet.

OCN retain #7 but will have noticed that CNT (#8) have picked up speed and set the course. TAAT (#9) have had to let the Czechs pass and will now be casting an eye over RKN (#10) and MK (#11). Rank 12 has attracted altogether 5 Teams so that the sequence can be completely different with every hour. Currently both on the same points are BOINC.Italy and Chinese Dream at #12, followed by USA (#14) and two further teams on equal points: Teams BOINC@AUSTRALIA and Crunching@EVGA at #15.

Ukraine (#17) and BOINC@Poland (#18) are still keeping each other busy and are not paying any attention to AMD Users (#19). Das Kartell and BOINCstats are sharing #20 at the moment and profit from a weak phase by LITOMYSL (#22). LTT Forums (#23) have gained a little ground but it remains to be seen if that will be enough to make further progress. Especially UK BOINC Team (#24) and BOINC@MIXI (#25) should not be disregarded. The same goes for 2ch who at #26 aren’t persuading us that they are fulfilling their potential. The field is rounded off by SETIKAH@KOREA (#27), Crystal Dream (#28), U.S. Army & BOINC@Pfalz (#29) and BOINC Confederation (#31).

Three-way contests over three-way contests. And of course 3 questions:
    - Will CNT advance further in the Overall Standings?
    - Will SG manage to cut loose from their undeserving Rank 6?
    - How good are the sharpshooters of P3D?

As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

    Re: BOINC Pentathlon 2018

    Day 5 - 09 May 2018

With a good 36h to go before the start of the Sprint, the uninitiated might believe that an expectant calm has befallen the Pentathlon. But that’s far from reality. There’s frenzied action at both Swimming and the Marathon. At Swimming, the teams are moving into position for the end spurt and are already mentally practising their attack moves. It wouldn’t be the first time that the outcome was thus played out.

    Marathon
Step by step is how the Marathon advances. Even though the margins seem large, we’ve not yet covered half the distance. However, it’ll be a mammoth task to snatch Gold away from the boys and girls of SUSA which only P3D could set out to achieve. It remains to be seen if they will rise to the challenge or place their bets on other disciplines. The Americans are maintaining their lead and I won’t need to consult my crystal ball to know that they are busily filling their bunkers for the Sprint. Mind you, that might also present a new chance.

It’s quite impressive to see how [H] manage to hold on to rank 3. The speed of the Green Planet is almost keeping pace and they’re thus leaving their astonished rivals behind. The Chinese Dragon has now pushed up to #4 ahead of TC. They passed SG (#5) who now need to ask themselves: what’s still feasible?

Whilst TAAT continue to maintain a great #6, CNT (#8) are starting to breathe down the neck of Team OCN (#7). There’s now more certainty of a forthcoming change of places. AF (#9) and MK (#10) complete the Top10. AMD Users who zoomed past three teams can now be found at #13. Even though Crunching@EVGA (#14) were able to hold position, BOINC.Italy (#15) are steadily moving closer. There’s evidence of a drama at #16. AMD Users’ profit became Chinese Dream’s deficit. Has the dream of a good ranking already evaporated? At the current tempo they’ve got to be afraid of BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#17) and Ukraine (#18) who continue to spur each other on.

Even the tussle between UK BOINC Team and Das Kartell over #19 has not yet been decided. Behind them, slowly getting into their stride, are 2ch who have pushed to #21 past LITOMYSL (#22) and BOINC@MIXI (#23). The change of position at #27 had already been forecast as U.S. Army put SETIKAH in their place. Now the Koreans have to look out as BOINC@Poland (#29) have nearly caught up and are set to overtake.

    Swimming
For the moment, SUSA continue to lead the field. You’ll wonder why I am cautious. Isn’t the advantage ample? That is true, at least that’s what it used to be. P3D (#2) have made a massive leap in the last few hours and have more than halved the deficit. That promises an exciting final tomorrow. The outcome at Bronze will most likely be decided by Rooster and Dragon. Will the Rooster peck out the Dragon’s eyes or will there be grilled Rooster? We will see. AF are currently at #3 and TC (#4) are not coming any closer at the moment.

Duel or three-way fight? That’s the question at #5. [H] continue to contest their position valiantly ahead of SG (#6) but the Germans treasure every point and will not give up. OCN (#7) have lost the connection but aren’t so far behind that they can’t come back. On the other hand, BOINC@Poland have moved up to #8 and are thus holding the best cards in this four-way fight for one of the places in the Top10. Whilst RKN hold on to #9, CNT (#11) are clearly losing ground and had to let TAAT (#10) overtake them.

BOINC@AUSTRALIA continue securely at #12 as neither MK (#13) nor BOINC.Italy (#14) can match the Australian’s pace. There’s one disaster after another for Chinese Dream (#16). They’ve already collapsed at the Marathon and must now let Crunching@EVGA (#15) overtake them. And there’s more danger behind as USA (#17) are fast approaching. LTT Forums (#18) continue to forge ahead. That might almost be the end of the line as the gap to the front is already considerably large and not much time remaining.

You couldn’t fit a piece of paper between Ukraine (#19) and BOINCstats (#20) at the moment and even LITOMYSL (#21) aren’t too far away and could still attack. More about Swimming tomorrow at the dawn of the remaining few hours.

    Overall
SUSA ahead of P3D ahead of [H] ahead of TC ahead of AF is currently the accustomed ranking lineup. SG at #6 have lost a bit of ground and must also brace themselves slowly for OCN (#7). A bad day at Swimming led to TAAT (#8) also losing points but as CNT (#9) behind them are also weakening, nothing happened. What brings misery to one, brings joy to another. RKN (#10), MK (#11), BOINC@AUSTRALIA and USA (#12) have managed to advance a little and don’t want to write off the Top10.

Crunching@EVGA (#14), BOINC.Italy (#14) and Chinese Dream (#16) will all be licking their wounds. This Trio managed to lose points and slide backwards. That could be the chance for BOINC@Poland (#17) and AMD Users (#18). Both have been busily collecting points and are thus moving in closer to the unhappy trio. There won’t be time to express their commiserations. Rank 19 has been taken by Ukraine.

LTT Forums are swimming at #20, past Das Kartell (#21) and LITOMYSL (#22). BOINCstats (#23) remain in fighting distance. When can we expect an attack? Though no improvement in ranks, points were claimed by UK BOINC Team (#24) and 2ch (#25) who were thus able to move away from BOINC@MIXI (#26). Then follow SETIKAH@KOREA (#27), Crystal Dream (#28) and U.S. Army (#29). The Army have to share their rank with BOINC Confederation who succeeded in pushing BOINC@Pfalz to the back.

And once again no answers, just more questions:
    - Are P3D reaching out for Gold at Swimming?
    - Are SUSA squandering their chances at the Marathon?
    - Can [H] hold on to Bronze in the Overall Standings?

As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

    Re: BOINC Pentathlon 2018

    Day 6 - 10 May 2018

Rookies are beginning to discover what makes the Pentathlon so challenging. Two disciplines are currently active and tomorrow the teams must not only get out of the start blocks at the Sprint as quickly as possible but also proceed with the Finale at Swimming. Three disciplines on the same day, that will be a challenge to the scribes. In addition, the tacticians in the teams will have noticed that the City Run and the Cross-Country have been announced. There’s a lot to think about. But for now, the first decision of this year’s Pentathlon is approaching.

    Swimming
In the last few days, P3D have managed to move ever closer to SUSA, once, for 1h, even the Germans moved past. But then the empire struck back. SUSA are currently leading in front of P3D. This clarifies that the first decision of the Pentathlon will be decided on the finish line. Both teams are not allowing the other any leeway at all.

The battle over Bronze continues to be fought intensively by Dragon and Rooster. Team China are currently at #3 and managed to really press AF (#4). Will the singed Francophones retaliate? Behind, SG managed to pass [H] onto #5. However, the margin doesn’t yet deserve to be described as such. Here too, the next 33h will remain exciting.

OCN at #7 can feel quite secure. Only an insane final sprint would allow BOINC@Poland (#8), RKN (#9), TAAT (#10) or CNT (#11) to pass. But that should not yet be dismissed, my dear readers. Everything’s possible at the Pentathlon. The Czechs have thus always been game for such surprises.

It’s the same here as at the Marathon where BOINC@AUSTRALIA are happiest in no-man’s-land, #12 appears well fortified. MK (#13), BOINC.Italy (#14) and Crunching@EVGA (#15) aren’t out of reach but I’ve got my doubts. At the very least, Chinese Dream have found their pace in the water, have for now secured #16 and are keeping USA (#17) at a distance. On the other hand, the next team LTT Forums (#18) find themselves in mid-table obscurity.

BOINCstats (#19) were able to push past Ukraine (#20) and are trying to make more space. LITOMYSL (#21) and AMD Users (#22) aren’t too far behind. Both teams are still capable and surely have the determination to enter into the battle for the Top20. Rank 23 continues to be fought over by Das Kartell, SETIKAH (#24) and 2ch (#25). BOINC@MIXI have consolidated rank 26 ahead of BOINC Confederation (#27). There’s intense action between UK BOINC Team (#28) and Crystal Dream (#29) whereby the Brits are shortly going to have to concede a rank. The end of the field is made up of BOINC@Pfalz (#30), U.S. Army (#31) and SETI.Bitola (#32).

    Marathon
Here, the situation has calmed down. Although SUSA’s advantage over P3D has shrunk, it’s not significant. Let’s call it controlled shrinkage. [H] continue to secure #3, TC (#4) and SG (#5) can only glance wistfully in their direction. In addition, the field behind has sorted itself out. TAAT (#6), OCN (#7), CNT (#8), AF (#9) and MK (#10) aren’t currently showing any ambition.

The exception is BOINC.Italy who break through the monotony. The Italians snatched #14 from Crunching@EVGA. Further along, the drama involving Chinese Dream continues. Rang 16 should soon be history because the Chinese have trouble staying on their feet. They are even moving along the track on all fours. On the other hand, BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#17) have smelled blood. Hungry, they descend on their victim like an Australian saltwater crocodile and thus even the pizza-filled Italians could find themselves on the menu.

There are three lots of musical chairs to be found. Whilst Das Kartell and UK BOINC Team are disagreeing over #19, LITOMYSL and BOINC@MIXI are quarrelling over 22. Also LTT Forums and Crystel Dream are figuring out a plan for #25.

    Overall
There won’t most likely be any significant changes until after the start of the Sprint but even so, no sign of boredom here. SUSA lead ahead of P3D which, however, could change at any moment when the Green Planet succeed in making the Americans swallow water at Swimming We can now find TC at #3. They managed the jump onto the podium as a result of their improvement in Swimming and a slight weakening of [H] (#4).

That’s still too far away for SG (#5). There’s got to be a better show in the next disciplines. Another reason is that AF (#6) continue to move closer. There are no changes further along: OCN (#7), TAAT (#8), CNT (#9), RKN (#10) and MK (#11) are holding position.

In the group fighting over #12, BOINC.Italy have glided into top position, scarcely ahead of the teams on equal points from BOINC@AUSTRALIA and USA (#13) as well as Crunching@EVGA (#15) and Chinese Dream (#16) who are lying in wait. Even BOINC@Poland can still enter the fray if they want. AMD Users and Ukraine follow on at #18 and #19.

Das Kartell have managed to secure #20 and have thus relegated LTT Forums (#21) and BOINCstats (#22). LITOMYSL could potentially still intervene but it’s currently not clear if that’s something they want to do. 2ch and UK BOINC Team are sharing #24, clearly ahead of BOINC@MIXI (#26), SETIKAH (#27), Crystal Dream (#28), BOINC Confederation & USA (#29) and BOINC@Pfalz (#31).

What has this day brought us?
    - Are P3D playing with SUSA at Swimming?
    - Are SUSA playing with P3D at Swimming?
    - Are AF retaliating at Swimming?

As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

    Re: BOINC Pentathlon 2018

    Day 7 - 11 May 2018

What a day! Start and Finish all on the same day. And straight away, everything is well mixed up again. Due to the action at Swimming as well as at the Sprint and the resulting consequences in the Overall Standings, I’ll leave the Marathon to one side today as that’s moving along nice and quiet at the moment. As expected, the teams have naturally moved their focus elsewhere because in the next few hours the decision is expected at:

    Swimming
Claiming victory in the end spurt? We are expecting a great Finale. The spectators have jumped up from their seats. Anybody not on their feet needs to seek medical attention. Just now, SUSA once again regained the lead after P3D (#2) had earlier managed to overtake the Americans. What power can both teams still unleash?

The fight over Bronze is no less exciting. The last time AF (#3) managed to stand on the podium in a discipline was in 2015 and they seem highly motivated. TC (#4) must lick their scales as they were unable to counter the angry attack of the last few hours und had to relinquish the Bronze rank. However, I’m certain that the fire breathing dragon from the Far East has not yet set off all its fireworks.

SG (#5) continue to put distance between [H] (#6) but the margin isn’t yet substantial enough to ward off a potential last minute bunker attack. We’ve just seen TAAT launch such an attack. They shot past OCN (#8) and CNT (#9) with a mighty push and thus claimed #7. If there’s enough juice in the tank, they could potentially still attack Rank 5! That almost put the spurt of the Czechs in the shade but not so fast. Here too the powerful interim spurt has led to considerable improvement.

Losers of the last few hours are BOINC@Poland (#10) und RKN (#11) which doesn’t mean that both are giving up. There’s no obvious danger behind. The margin is comfortable and BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#12) aren’t making a move to attack. Rank 13 seems to be the maximum that Meisterkühler could potentially reach. They still call this rank their own, but Crunching@EVGA (#14) have already begun to lay claim to it. Even BOINC.Italy (#15) are still a contender despite just having had to forfeit a place.

Chinese Dream (#16) and USA (#17) appear content with their rankings, also LTT Forums who are looking smart at #18. But behind, #19 is far from spoken for. Ukraine (#19), LTOMYSL (#20), BOINCstats (#21) and even AMD Users (#22) are all making a powerful play for it. Rank 23 has not yet been fortified by Das Kartell as SETIKAH (#24) keep coming to take a closer look. Advice to the two is not to let 2ch (#25) out of their sight.

BOINC@MIXI have good chances to bring in #26. On the other hand, BOINC Confederation (#27) have found themselves under immense pressure. Crystal Dream (#28) are powering forwards and have moved past UK BOINC Team (#29). BOINC@Pfalz (#30), U.S. Army (#31) and SETI.Bitola (#32) appear content at the end of the field.

    Sprint
It’s not much of a surprise to see SUSA (#1) be the first to get out of the start blocks. Behind, TC have settled at #2 but only just ahead of P3D (#3). SG got away much better than usual. Rank 4 is a good starting position to allow them to stay in the fight for the medals. TAAT (#5) are running along just a fraction behind the Germans and are currently able to keep OCN (#6), CNT (#7) and [H] (#8) behind them.

We are not surprised to see RKN at Rank 9, followed by BOINC.Italy who have had a great start. Swimming must be taking it out of AF as only #11 on the scoreboard for them. Behind, the margins are wafer-thin. For that reason we anticipate many place changes in the next few hours. Nevertheless, LTT Forums can currently be happy with #12 followed by Crunching@EVGA (#13), USA (#14), MK (#15), BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#16) and UK BOINC Team (#17).

Further along, a (really) very small gap is opening up. SETIKAH (#18) are leading this part of the field followed by BOINC@Poland (#19), AMD Users (#20), 2ch (#21), BOINCstats (#22) and Chinese Dream (#23). Behind, the gaps are miniscule: BOINC Confederation (#24) only just ahead of Ukraine (#25). BOINC@MIXI (#26) and Crystal Dream (#27) are separated by only a cell.
As you can see, there’s still a lot of variation to come. Time’s short and margins are small. All ingredients for a fascinating Sprint are right here.

    Overall
The Overall Standings have been modified with the start of the Sprint. Though SUSA continue to lead ahead of P3D and TC were able to consolidate #3, there’s been a lot of activity behind them. SG now lay claim to #4, a paper-thin margin away from [H]. TAAT have improved and moved up to #6, past AF (#7). OCN (#8) are gaining lots of points through the Sprint and are thus putting pressure on AF. CNT (#9), RKN (#10), MK (#11) and BOINC.Italy (#12) were able to hold on to their rankings for the time being. The Italians gained points and managed to break loose from Crunching@EVGA (#13), USA (#14) and BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#15).

Even LTT Forums (#16) leapt forward on account of the Sprint and are thus able to profit from the current Sprint weakness of BOINC@Poland (#17), AMD Users (#18), Chinese Dream (#19) and Ukraine (#20). The good interim Sprint result also benefits UK BOINC Team (#21) who together with 2ch (#22) and SETIKAH (#23) sprinted further ahead. Boincstats are holding on to #24 which is a result of the short track weakness of Das Kartell (#25), LITOMYSL (#26) und BOINC@MIXI (#27). At #28 we find BOINC Confederation ahead of Crystal Dream (#29), U.S. Army (#30) and BOINC@Pfalz (#31).

Do you know what you need to do today? Find the answers!
    - Who will win at Swimming?
    - Will AF at long last be able to claim a medal?
    - What can we still expect at the Sprint?

As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

    Re: BOINC Pentathlon 2018

    Day 8 - 12 May 2018

It has been accomplished. The first individual medals have been distributed. However, our heroes from Swimming won’t have much time for celebrations. Out of the pool and onwards it goes. Tomorrow, the terrain will be rocky with the start of the Cross Country and then, the day after tomorrow, we begin the City Run. Also, don’t forget, there’s the decision at the Sprint tomorrow.

    Swimming
SUSA win Gold and did not get torched in the end. Although P3D tried indeed everything, they were unable to get the better of the concentrated might of the Americans and thus burst their dream of victory. However, the Green Planet can be content with Silver. Team China managed to secure #3 with an end spurt and thus Bronze and thereby triumphed over AF in the final phase. Congratulations to all medal winners.

AF have achieved their best individual ranking since 2015. It might be a huge disappointment to them but nevertheless, it constitutes a great achievement. They won’t really be satisfied at SG. Rank 5 was the result and at that with a considerable deficit which will have caused a few grumbling stomachs. [H] crossed the finish line at Rank 6 and at the same time raked in the best standing since 2015 and as a consequence kept TAAT behind them at #7. This, by the way, was the best individual ranking for TAAT since 2010.

OCN claimed #8 and in the end, were not caught unawares by CNT (#9). However, BOINC@Poland (#11) did get a surprise as they were caught out by RKN (#10). BOINC@AUSTRALIA crossed the finish line at #12 with an easy crawl followed by Meisterkühler at #13. We then witnessed a real photo finish behind. Only 667 credits decided in favour of BOINC.Italy who thus claimed #14 and managed to leave Crunching@EVGA (#15) behind them. Just as well that the race ended when it did.

At their premiere, Chinese Dream swam over the finish line at #16 and kept USA #17 and LTT Forums (#18) behind them. There was a right old skirmish in the water over #19. LITOMYSL managed to triumph in the end, followed by Ukraine (#20), BOINCstats (#21) and AMD Users (#22). Das Kartell secured #23 as a result of SETIKAH (#24) not having enough power for the end spurt.

2ch touched at #25 ahead of BOINC@MIXI (#26) and BOINC Confederation (#27). That team had to tremble at the end as Crystal Dream (#28) came threateningly close. However, the victim of Crystal Dream’s end spurt were UK BOINC Team (#29) where the British lacked power to turn the tide. Rank 30 went to BOINC@Pfalz ahead of U.S. Army (#31) and SETI.Bitola (#32).

    Sprint
The pattern is the same, a quick start and then monitoring the advantage. That’s how SUSA operate this year and very successfully at that. P3D (#2) are toiling away but are unable to keep up. [H] (#3), SG (#4) and TC (#5) don’t grant any favours in their fight for Bronze and it remains completely open who might in the end come out on top.

At #6 there is a fight between CNT and TAAT (#7), here too, the standings could potentially change with the start of every new hour. Fantastic progress is made by USA at #8 who should remain vigilant as OCN (#9) are lying in wait. Behind, AF (#10) and RKN (#11) are keeping each other busy and forgetting to check on their surroundings. At first glance it’s not so serious as LTT Forums (#12), BOINC.Italy (#13) and Chinese Dream (#14) are also engaged with each other.

Just as they did at the Marathon, BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#15) are slowly gaining ground at the Sprint and thus increase the distance to MK (#16). Behind, margins are really tight. Only around 75k separate Crunching@EVGA (#17), UK BOINC Team (#18), 2ch (#19), AMD Users (#20), BOINC@Poland (#21) and SETIKAH (#22). Changes here cannot be prevented.

    Marathon
On the long track, SUSA continue to be attracted by the glitter of gold. Although P3D continue to make up ground, it won’t be enough. [H] are steadfastly holding on to #3 and continue to keep TC (#4) at a distance. SG (#5) are in acute danger of losing touch with the Chinese and must react if they want to bring in Rank 4.

In the end, three teams will fight it out over #6. TAAT (#6), OCN (#7) and CNT (#8) are packed together at approximately the same pace and keep a close eye on each other. The motto for AF (#9), MK (#10) and RKN (#11) appears to be to hold position. However, that won’t be quite so easy as AMD Users have kicked into gear and moved up to #12 and at the same time simply left USA (#13) standing.

Nothing new about BOINC.Italy (#14) and Crunching@EVGA (#15) fighting over #14 but now BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#16) mean business and are coming up on the outside lane. Whilst Chinese Dream (#17) are showing signs of life, Ukraine (#18) will begin to get nervous. And the reason for that is UK BOINC Team (#19) and 2ch (#20). Both teams are currently going full steam ahead.

Das Kartell (#21) are unable to keep pace with the Japanese and should quickly risk a glance to the rear as BOINC@MIXI (#22) are slowly creeping up. LITOMYSL are found at #23, followed by BOINCstats (#24), LTT Forums (#25), Crystal Dream (#26), BOINC@Poland (#27), U.S. Army (#28), SETIKAH (#29), BOINC@Pfalz (#30) and BOINC Confederation (#31).

    Overall
SUSA’s chances for Overall Victory are increasing day by day. P3D (#2) must come up with a solution or hope for some American recklessness. Rank 3 will surely be contested by [H] (#3) and TC (#4). However, SG (#5) cannot yet be dismissed as they could be back in the mix with a good result in the Cross Country.

Margins continue to be extremely tight between ranks 6 to 9. TAAT (#6) are a model of consistency and don’t make it easy for AF (#7), CNT (#8) und OCN (#9). On the other hand, RKN have entrenched themselves at #10. Behind, USA (#11) and MK (#12) don’t give each other an inch. Even so, BOINC.Italy (#13) and BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) are still in a position to have a say in the matter.

Rank 15 will be within the grasp of both Chinese Dream (#16) and Crunching@EVGA (#15) who are both currently on equal points. Behind, LTT Forums (#17) profit from their strong performance at the Sprint and the weakness in that race of BOINC@Poland (#19). AMD Users have prepared the ground for #18 at the Marathon but they are not so strong at the other disciplines. If that were to continue, it could be a chance for Ukraine (#20), UK BOINC Team (#21) and 2ch (#22).

Behind then follow LITOMYSL (#23), BOINCstats (#24), Das Kartell (#25), BOINC@MIXI (#26) and SETIKAH (#27) packed tight. Crystal Dream are busy collecting points and stand at #28 ahead of BOINC Confederation (#29), U.S. Army (#30), BOINC@Pfalz (#31) and SETI.Bitola (#32).

    - Who will get the best start at the Cross Country?
    - Can P3D still attack SUSA at the Sprint?
    - Can TAAT hold on to Rank 6 in the Overall Standings?

As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

    Re: BOINC Pentathlon 2018

Congratulations on winning our first gold medal this year! Just a reminder that Rosetta is on-going right now and ends tomorrow evening (5/13 8PM Eastern/5PM Pacific). We also have NumberFields which ends 5/18 at the same time. Primegrid begins tonight at 8PM Eastern/5PM Pacific and Asteroids begins 24 hours after that. Crunch on!

    Re: BOINC Pentathlon 2018

    Day 9 - 13 May 2018

We are now moving into the deciding phase of the Pentathlon with the start of the Cross Country. This is where important decisions are made and a graphic card weakness could in the end be a deciding factor in the Overall Standings. It’s great to see such a high number of teams, more than ever, fighting for medals in the individual disciplines even though SUSA appear dominant at the top at this time.

    Cross Country
What a great start from SUSA once again, can you believe it? As soon as the shot was fired, the Americans raced off over the uneven ground and didn’t seem bothered by rocks and shrubbery. It appears they prepared well and were kitted out perfectly. And thus their competitors don’t get to see but the tail feathers of the American Eagle.

Another team which started well are Team China but it remains to be seen how long the cleverly crunched buffer will last. At last CNT (#3) have found a discipline where they engage in a fight for a medal. SG are currently only able to sit at #4 and will now set course for the medals. You can always count on SG at GPUs. On the other hand, more often than not, this seems to be P3D’s Achilles’ heel. Maybe that’s going to change?

AF’s position at #6 cannot be taken for granted, let’s see how that develops. OCN are still holding back and are underway at #7 ahead of [H] (#8) and TAAT (#9). Rookie LTT Forums (#10) continue to cause a stir and are therefore not only surprising RKN (#11), MK (#12) and BOINC.Italy (#13). BOINC@MIXI are valiantly holding on to #14 ahead of 2ch (#15) and BOINC@Poland (#16), BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#17) and USA (#18) who are almost running abreast.

However, BOINC Confederation (#19) have lost sight of their competitors. It’s not as if they’re getting bored as UK BOINC Team (#20) and AMD Users (#21) are almost in line with them. LITOMYSL at (#22) have to invest a bit more if they’re to keep up. BOINCstats follow at #23, ahead of U.S. Army (#24) and Crunching@EVGA (#25). Also, almost running neck and neck over the terrain are BOINC@Pfalz (#26) and SETIKAH (#27) who are thus leaving Ukraine (#28) and Das Kartell (#29) behind them.

    Sprint
The decision is getting closer. Surely, quite a few bunkers will be emptied in the next few hours resulting in position changes of any magnitude. SUSA are sprinting towards the next Gold. P3D seem to have decided that Silver is enough but [H] (#3), SG (#4) and TC (#5) aren’t just eyeing up Bronze. There’s much more to come.

It is momentarily unclear what CNT (#6) are still able to do. A sudden attack from the Czechs will continue to be a danger to them. It’s looking good for TAAT (#7) as USA (#8) and OCN (#9) are trailing and have slackened in their pace. AF (#10) and RKN (#11) will most likely decide the last place in the Top10 between themselves. The group fighting behind are just beginning to determine position, currently BOINC.Italy at #12, followed by LTT Forums (#13), BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) and Chinese Dreams (#15).

Meisterkühler (#16) are always game for a last minute surprise, let’s wait and see if they can still pull something out of the hat. Just behind, 2ch (#17) and AMD Users (#18) have made good some places and thus left Crunching@EVGA (#19), UK BOINC Team (#20), BOINC@Poland (#21) and SETIKAH (#22) behind them. Ukraine are giving it everything to try and catch up with this group but #23 could be the end of the line for them.

BOINC@MIXI can now be found at #24 only just ahead of the chief statisticians of BOINCstats (#25). There’s a more pronounced gap to BOINC Confederation (#26). Here too, margins are very tight as LITOMYSL (#27) are breathing down the neck of the confederates and even the breath of Das Kartell (#28) and Crystal Dream (#29) can be felt. The field is currently concluded by: U.S. Army (#30) and BOINC@Pfalz (#31).

    Marathon
Again, just a short detour onto the long distance track today. Our valiant runners are facing many more days here whilst the other individual disciplines take place. There are many more chances to change fortunes with a change of tactics. As the margins are naturally larger due to the nature of the race, this should not be postponed indefinitely. There’s been no change in the top ranks. SUSA are clearly leading the field. However, P3D (#2) continue to nibble at the backlog. [H] can still be found at #3.

We’ve got a new #6 in the Top10. OCN managed to overtake TAAT (#7) this morning and reaped just rewards for their patient pursuit race, at least for the time being.

Lethargy appears to have descended over the teams behind. Are they in a trance? Who knows. On the other hand, BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14), Crunching@EVGA (#15) and BOINC.Italy (#16) are very perky. There’s a lot of fiery activity from #14 to #16. Who knows who will come out on top from this lively trio.

Maybe that’s why it’s so quiet as the other teams are enjoying the show. But not all. At least 2ch fail to be distracted and claim #20 ahead of Das Kartell (#21).

    Overall
If the situation remains the same, there’s not much of a chance of taking Gold off SUSA but there’s further development at Sprint and therefore, all’s not yet been decided. Realistically, only P3D (#2) could still be a danger to the Americans. To what extent TC (#3), [H] (#4) or SG (#5) could lay waste to the Green Planet remains to be seen. It cannot yet be dismissed.

CNT have pushed up to #6 past AF (#7). The Francophones were able to hang on to this rank whilst dismissing TAAT onto #8 at the same time. At this moment, TAAT have to share this rank with OCN. RKN have currently fortified #10 as MK (#11), BOINC.Italy (#12) and USA (#13) aren’t managing to crunch any closer. However, this is exactly what BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) have succeeded in doing. They’ve managed to establish the connection to the front runners through powerful kangaroo jumps at the Marathon and the Sprint.

There are also LTT Forums (#15) who have moved up in the rankings as they pulled off a very good start at the Cross Country. BOINC@Poland (#16) are moving along in the slipstream and are thus able to keep AMD Users (#17), Crunching@EVGA (#18) and Chinese Dream (#19) behind them. 2ch have worked their way up to #20 followed by BOINC@MIXI (#21) who have made a giant leap.

UK BOINC Team continue to hold on to #22 as Ukraine (#23), LITOMYSL (#24), BOINCstats (#25) had to forfeit some places. I managed to find BOINC Confederation at #26. They’ve just moved past Das Kartell (#27) and continue to put distance between SETIKAH (#28), U.S. Army (#29), Crystal Dream (#30) and BOINC@Pfalz (#31).

    - Who is still able to spoil SUSA’s victory at the Sprint?
    - Can SG claim Bronze at the Sprint?
    - Who will come off best at the City Run?

As you will see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

    Re: BOINC Pentathlon 2018

    Day 10 - 14 May 2018

What an enthralling end phase at the Sprint, there was everything to be played for. The City Run got underway with lots of action and the current situation there can only be described as prickly. The Pentathlon has moved into its torrid phase, 2 decisions have already been made but 3 are still outstanding. And they still pack a punch.

    Sprint
Gold goes to SUSA who dictated the tempo throughout and managed to cross the finish line with the original margin intact. Silver goes to P3D who were made to fear for their Silver medal right at the end. With a final strike, CNT shot past their competitors onto Bronze on the last day. Congratulations.

other teams would surely have known that they have to reckon with the Czechs at the Sprint. It’s all the more inexplicable that they had nothing to offer to counter their attack. [H] shouldn’t be reproached as there’s ‘only’ sheet metal left with #4 but still, this fourth place is their best standing ever in the Pentathlon. I would suggest that they deserve to be congratulated for it. On the other hand, SG (#5) and TC (#6) ended up under the wheels and would each have expected more. That might have consequences for the Chinese, especially as they are thus losing valuable points in the Overall Standings.

TAAT claimed another 7th place without being challenged. OCN (#8) and RKN (#9) were not quite able to keep to the pace whilst RKN’s end spurt either came too late or was just a little too weak. USA complete the Top10.
As for AF, the same as for RKN applies to them, there was a measurable end spurt but it wasn’t enough to catch the Americans and thus, they are at #11 in the standings. BOINC.Italy completed the Sprint at #12 as per usual, ahead of LTT Forums who made us take notice with a finish at #13. BOINC@AUSTRALIA were able to secure #14 in the end and did not leave Chinese Dream with a chance. In the end, Meisterkühler were left with #16. Margins were tight behind. 2ch claimed #17 ahead of AMD Users (#18), UK BOINC Team (#19) and BOINC@Poland (#20).

There was quite a bit of drama to be found behind. Crunching@EVGA (#21) ran out of breath on the last day whilst SETIKAH (#22) gave it everything. In the end it was only just enough for Crunching@EVGA. Ukraine went over the finish line at #23, followed by BOINC@MIXI (#24) and BOINCstats (#25). LITOMYSL got the better of BOINC Conferation (#27) and thus rank 26. The decision behind was decided by a photo finish. Crystal Dream claimed #28 and thus thwarted the effort from Das Kartell (#29) to regain their place. U.S. Army crossed the finish line at #30, followed by BOINC@Pfalz.

    Marathon
Once again, just a quick look at the Marathon. SUSA lead and control the advantage but P3D are closing in. It has to be said that the harvest on the Green Planet needs to improve as otherwise, it won’t be sufficient. Rightfully, [H] (#3) can continue to be hopeful of claiming Bronze but Team China pose a threat. The dragons are closing in and if the H-team don’t soon pick up the pace, it will get very difficult for them. Behind, SG (#5) and OCN (#6) appear to do nothing but maintain their positions which leads us to suspect that their focus lies elsewhere.

TAAT can naturally be found at #7 ahead of Team CNT (#8) who are slowly getting into the rhythm. AF will most likely be left with #9, whilst MK (#10) shouldn’t feel too reassured. The reason for that is that AMD Users (#11) and RKN (#12) are not giving each other an inch, are spurring each other on and thus advancing in powerful strides.

There’s continued hot action at #19. 2ch (#19) and UK BOINC Team (#20) are in a clinch and can’t currently decide which of the two are the better team. On the other hand, BOINCstats (#23) have managed to get away from LITOMYSL (#24) and thus been able to secure #23.

    Cross Country
This is where we see the big numbers but don’t be deceived. It’s to be compared to the time when Germany had hyperinflation and 50 million aren’t an awful lot and advantages can melt faster than butter in the sun. SUSA lead the field and are clearly demonstrating their ambition for their third Gold. Behind is an aerial battle between Eagle and Dragon. SG (#2) have got their nose in front at this time and are keeping TC (#3) behind them. However, this can change by the hour.

CNT don’t appear to be able to follow and remain at #4 just lying in wait. P3D are faced with losing valuable points for the Overall Standings as are currently only at #5. They’ve got to make something happen! AF (#6) continue to maintain their position well but are slowly coming under pressure from OCN (#7) and TAAT (#8). [H] follow at rank 9 and are looking good in the rocky terrain. RKN are currently en route to #10 only just ahead of LTT Forums (#11). Then follow 2ch (#12), MK (#13), BOINC@MIXI (#14), BOINC.@Italy (#15), BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#16) and BOINC@Poland (#17).

USA (#18) have had to break off but maintain a little buffer to AMD Users (#19) and UK BOINC Team (#20). It’s really tight between LITOMYSL (#21) and BOINC Confederation (#22), a similar situation to the one between Crunching@EVGA (#23) and BOINCstats. U.S. Army (#25) have found a few graphic cards but need them to counter the attacks by SETIKAH (#26) and BOINC@Pfalz (#27) and even Ukraine (#28). Das Kartell can do nothing but watch (#29), the same goes for Crystal Dream (#30).

    City Run
The traditional City Run is harbouring a surprise. It’s not SUSA who lead the field. It’s P3D who had the best start. SUSA are currently trying to clear the field from behind and have just gained #2 and thus relegated SG to #3. Further along, there’s already a little gap opening up to CNT (#4), TC (#5), TAAT (#6) and OCN (#7). Whilst AF are not unexpected at #8, LITOMYSL (#9) aren’t usually found so far in front. Let’s wait and see if the Czechs can keep this up.

BOINC.Italy at #10 follow behind by a small margin ahead of USA (#11), Chinese Dream (#12) and [H] (#13). SETIKAH are also moving along well at #14 and are keeping BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#15) behind them. It’s surprising to find RKN this far behind, currently only at #16. Ukraine at #17 follow on not far behind. The next teams are MK (#18) and Crunching@EVGA (#19) who are only separated by a whisker. Also, the margin between AMD Users (#20) and Das Kartell (#21) is paper-thin. BOINC@Poland should be expected to do better than #22, whilst Crystal Dream #23 won’t be too dissatisfied.

2ch are currently running at #24, followed by LTT Forums (#25), BOINC@MIXI (#26), BOINCstats (#27), UK BOINC Team (#28) and BOINC Confederation (#29). On the other hand, there’s once again a fight between U.S. Army (#30) and BOINC@Pfalz (#31).

    Overall
We now have a list, for the first time, with points in all disciplines. And that shows that it’s unlikely that victory will be taken from SUSA. And even P3D could afford a slipup but shouldn’t become reckless. SG are currently at #3 and have just pushed TC down to #4. CNT (#5) maintain a small distance but with a surprise attack at the Cross Country could reshuffle the pack.

[H] have fallen back to #6. They are losing points, especially at the City Run but we shouldn’t overlook that this team are still fighting for Bronze at the Marathon. TAAT have naturally taken up residence at #7, where else? On the other hand, rank 6 is not too far away. However, #8 is a lot closer and currently taken over by OCN and then AF at #9. Even though RKN are a little behind in the City Run, their success at collecting points secures them #10. BOINC.Italy can be found at #11, followed by USA (#12) and MK (#13) who in turn can feel BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) breathing down their neck.

Further along you can see a bit of a gap developing which begins to divide the field. Those who wish to overcome the distance must do so in giant leaps or down their tools. Chinese Dream (#15) are leading the second half of the field, followed by LTT Forums (#16) and AMD Users (#17) on equal points. Further along, Crunching@EVGA are holding on to #18 and thus ahead of BOINC@Poland (#19) who should, however, keep an eye on 2ch (#20) and LITOMYSL (#21). Ukraine are at #22 and thus ahead of: BOINC@MIXI (#23), SETIKAH (#24) and UK BOINC Team (#25). Das Kartell (#26) are determined to hold on to their ranking which BOINCstats (#27) wants to prevent.

    - Can the Pfalz triumph over the Army at Cross Country?
    - Can SG win the City Run?
    - Will P3D recover at the Cross Country?

As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

    Re: BOINC Pentathlon 2018

    Day 11 - 15 May 2018

More than 2/3 of the Pentathlon is now behind us and we thus enter the deciding phase in this year’s event. Three disciplines are still active and the effort is written all over the teams‘ faces. SUSA are the first team who could potentially win all five races in one year which would constitute a phenomenal achievement. However, there’s still time for the other teams to put a spoke in their wheel.

    Marathon
It’s in the nature of this race that distances grow the more time passes. However, the battle at the City Run will tempt the teams into drawing off resources and only maintain the established distance here. And that can quickly go awry. There had to come a reaction from SUSA (#1) or they would otherwise have got their tail feathers singed in P3D‘s (#2) in pursuit of them.

[H] (#3) too are forced to counter-steer to prevent TC (#4) from coming any closer. That has repercussions in their performance at the City Run and possibly affects both teams. On the other hand, SG (#5) are maintaining a high tempo and the Germans are even extending their advantage over OCN (#6). The question must be asked how meaningful that is as they are right in the middle of the battle for medals at Asteriods.

TAAT (#7) can only hope that CNT (#8) move their focus over to the City Run as it might get pretty tight otherwise. On the other hand, AF seem to be content with #9 and don’t appear to feel any pressure from MK (#10), AMD Users (#11) and RKN (#12). The margins within this trio are tight enough to allow for improvement in ranks but also for losses. It’s beginning to get a little tight for USA at #13 as BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) are advancing fast in long strides.

Crunching@EVGA (#15) might find themselves a little too far away. Caution is advised in regards to BOINC.Italy (#16) und Chinese Dream (#17). However, it looks as if the Chinese dream bubble has burst because you couldn’t possibly describe this as running. You think you are watching it in slow motion though they do rear up now and again. Ukraine continue to float between the worlds at #18 but the Ukraine team should not get too complacent. 2ch (#19) have got the better of UK BOINC Team (#20) who have come under pressure from BOINC@MIXI (#21) who in turn have overtaken Das Kartell (#22).

BOINCstats at #23 can’t decide whether to keep in touch with those in front or behind. The current tendency seems to be to go forwards. LTT Forums (#24) and LITOMYSL (#25) have changed places and attempt to detach from Crystal Dream (#26), BOINC@Poland (#27), U.S. Army (#28), SETIKAH (#29), BOINC@Pfalz (#30) and BOINC Confederation.

    Cross Country
SUSA continue to lead the pursuit for points but SG (#2) are not giving in and setting everything in motion to keep up. TC (#3) on the other hand had to break off. Tactics or weakness? We will see. We must always consider tactics when looking at CNT (#4) even though the deficit is already becoming quite large. This year too, P3D (#5) appear to be weak in the GPU-discipline which sees them forfeit vital points in the Overall Standings.

AF are coming under pressure at #6 from [H] (#7) who have picked up their pace considerably. They have changed places with OCN (#9). TAAT continue to remain at #8. A really strong performance by LTT Forums who have clawed #10 off RKN (#11). The Rechenkraftlers can afford a calm look to the rear as the next battling teams are a few light years away.

That group of battling rivals really pack a punch. They are led by BOINC@MIXI (#12) who are in a skin-tight duel with 2ch (#13) at the moment. Close behind follow BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) and BOINC.Italy (#15) who are also packed tight together. Lying in wait and using the slipstream are MK (#16) and BOINC@Poland (#17). The spectators are witness to a fight between three teams behind. USA still at #18 are awaiting the overtaking manoevre of Crunching@EVGA (#19) who have made a mega leap and thus surprised their neighbour in the standings, AMD Users (#20).

Other casualties were UK BOINC Team (#21), LITOMYSL (#22) and BOINC Confederation (#23). Unimpressed, BOINCstats are holding on to #24. The Statiticians are quite able to do that as there’s no danger from behind. SETIKAH (#25) and Ukraine (#26) were able to improve which had as a consequence that U.S. Army (#27) and BOINC@Pfalz (#28) deteriorated. Behind them, Crystal Dream (#29) are trying to stir these two up which already gave them success with Das Kartell (#30).

    City Run
SUSA are having to put up a fight to keep their competitors at bay. Neither P3D (#2) nor SG (#3) are willing to give up. However, we shouldn’t discount CNT (#4) and TC (#5) in the fight for medals as final bunker actions can and will stir up the field.

OCN have lost quite a bit of ground, now only at #9. TAAT (#6), AF (#7) and [H] (#8) were thus able to benefit. The strong interim sprint of [H] has cost LITOMYSL (#10), BOINC.Italy (#11), USA (#12) and Chinese Dream (#13) a place. In all that commotion, SETIKAH (#14) are creeping up to the Chinese and are nearly in a position to overtake.

It’s unusual for RKN at #15 to be so far behind but that doesn’t have to be their permanent resting place. Crunching@EVGA (#16) are coming closer as well as BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#17) who aren’t that far away. Ukraine can be found at #18 ahead of the solidly frozen MK (#19), AMD Users (#20) and Das Kartell (#21). 2ch (#22) have managed to gain 2 places and have just activated their blinkers. Not attracting much attention are BOINC@Poland (#23), Crystal Dream (#24), BOINCstats (#25) and BOINC@MIXI (#26).

At this moment, LTT Forums appear to be out of breath and if not careful, #27 could soon be gone as UK BOINC Team (#28) are already on their heels. Then follow BOINC Confederation (#29), U.S. Army (#30), BOINC@Pfalz (#31) and SETI.Bitola (#32).

    Overall
SUSA are clearly in the lead and it ought not be possible to separate them from their Gold. In addition, P3D seem secure at #2 but watch out as a lot can still happen at the City Run and Cross Country. SG continue to hold on to #3 only just ahead of TC (#4) and CNT (#5) who have still got potential. Now [H] (#6) decide to get into the fray. A powerful increase in speed at the City Run and Cross Country are pushing them back into the fight for overall medals.

TAAT are once again the 7th little goat which is being pursued by the Francophone rooster (#8) in sheep’s clothing. OCN at #9 have had to concede some ground but should be able to retaliate. There don’t seem to be many chances for RKN (#10) to improve, their arrears are already quite substantial. Rechenkraftlers won’t be easy to banish from the Top 10 as BOINC.Italy (#11), USA (#12) and BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#13) would have to surpass themselves.

Only #14 for MK leaves us wondering why, especially as at Asteroids it’s not looking great. Or is that a sign?
Crunching@EVGA have crunched to #15, past Chinese Dream (#16). Super progress in the Cross Cuntry but desolate in the City Run, that‘s LTT Forums (#17). This is resulting in an increase in distance to the front and allows the following teams of AMD Users (#18), 2ch (#19) and BOINC@Poland (#20) to be hopeful. We can find LITOMYSL at #21, followed by Ukraine (#22), BOINC@MIXI (#23), SETIKAH (#24) and UK BOINC Team (#25).
BOINCstats have dug in at #26 and behind in the points are Das Kartell (#27), Crystal Dream (#28), BOINC Confederation (#29), U.S. Army (#30) and BOINC@Pfalz (#31).

    - Can we expect a bunker from MK at the City Run?
    - Can [H] reach for Bronze in the Overall Standings?
    - Will TAAT succeed to cross the finish line at #7 in all the races?

As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.
