Ditto on the TeamViewer suggestion. Another, albeit more complicated, solution is to use OpenVPN over TCP port 80. You would then have full access to your LAN remotely.
Spring 2008 Race: (1st Place)
Guess TeamViewer is getting a lot of votes. May have to check that one out. For non-private uses I've relied on RAdmin with great success for over a decade. I call it the most cost effective piece of software I've ever bought at a company level.
As of the end of this month, LogMeIn will no longer be free. Prices will start at $49 for two computers. I guess it is time to switch back to Team Viewer.

I can't understand how to use Team Viewer minimized as LogMein. I also tried Google Chrome desktop remote control and I managed to add two machines (Win 7 ones) but failed for one machine with Windows 8.
I still use UltraVNC (Link) as it will always be free.
