    hello to all

hi guys my name is dave
used to crunch a few years ago and just got back into it again

ive got 2 computers crunching now and im going to set up some older machines i have as dedicated crunchers, ill be looking for some advice on how to get the most out of the older machines

one is a pentium 2 600mhz machine the other is a amd athlon 750mhz , and i have some other older p4 machines i can setup as dedicated crunchers

the machines i have setup now are

    GenuineIntel
    Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz [Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 1]
    (1 processors)
    4gb ram
which seems to be really slow

and this one which is the fastest
    AuthenticAMD
AMD A8-3800 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics [Family 18 Model 1 Stepping 0]
    (4 processors)
AMD AMD Radeon HD 6520G/6530D/6550D/6620G (SuperSumo) (256MB) driver: 1.4.1848 OpenCL: 1.2
    6gb of ram

unfortunatly i cannot leave these machines as dedicated crunchers but they do crunch about 8-16 hours a day

Well hello Dave and welcome back.

No worries on the dedicated crunching. Do what you can, when you can. Any and all work is much appreciated.

    Have a great weekend.

i dont mind setting up a bunch of dedicated computers as i have a whole walkin closet full of older machines and hardware, wifes been yelling at me to do something with all of them lol

the older machines im setting up on my network here at work are just going to be used for file storage , basically doing nothing so since they will be already setup i figured i could actually put them to use crunching 24/7

You will probably have to do some R&D o find projects where those slower machines can finish WUs before the deadlines, especially if only running part time. If you can't find any, let me know and I'll add some CPU tasks for the micro Collatz apps. If an android phone can do one in 3 hours, those PCs should be able to also. Chance are the mini Collatz app should work, but it might need a couple days to complete.

Nice to have you in the forum, Dave. Since you have some slow machines, you might want a boost from ZTAC01. Just follow the simple check list for free crunching in the link, below.

    Re: hello to all

thanks guys ive decided not to use the slower machines for crunching , my 2.8ghz machine does very lil in a day so those slower machines wont do much.
im going to re purpose one of them into a firewall/router for work and the other for file hosting

my p4 2.8 machine im going to make the dedicated cruncher and pick up 2 of those 50$ zotac pci cards
my amd machine at work i figured out if i limited it to 3 cores it can also crunch all day so that machine has been humming along for a few days now and doesnt slow down any work i may need to do on it

anyways im looking at purchasing a new mb/cpu combo for a home computer i do play a bunch of games and the amd computer i have at work will play just about all of them on full typically one tick below ultra on the settings

so ive been browsing ebay and came across this
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-A8-6600K...item1c3c3f6489
im thinking that would give me the lil bit more i need for my games and video editing then my work pc

what do u guys think about that combo , i would deffinatly add more ram to it im thinking 8gb total
is it a good deal or over priced ? anyone have any other suggestions for a combo like that in the 150-200$ range that would give me a boost over my current amd powered machine

    thanks alot dave
