Which browser are you hooked on?
Hey there.
Been a firefox user since the early days (ver 1.01) but as of lately it seems very "buggy" and even lagging at some points..I just could not take it anymore..!
Took the plunge and installed Chrome yesterday. Man, what a difference! And with the X-marks plugin one does not even have to worry about bookmarks...:p
So which browser are YOU hooked on??

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
I too have been using FireFox since ver.1. Currently running v3.5.17 with 20 active addons. But most of the addons are security related. So from time to time I do notice a slow down which is fine for me. I will probably upgrade to version 4 after its first significant revision. As for the other browsers? I will never go back to E. Can't stand that POS. Hopefully I will never go Google for any app because I do not like their MO.

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
Chrome held my interest for about 10 uses, then I dumped it. I think it's a "biased" browser that "steers" you rather than let you surf.
I'm sticking with Firefox for now. The latest revision is a lot less cluttered and very easy to get accustomed to. I don't need or want friggin' menu and tools bars all over the place and the latest Firefox has cleaned that up for me.
IE just doesn't count, but apparently, SOME sites REQUIRE its use and for that reason only that, do I still keep it around.

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
Hate IE and I have Firefox but I am getting to dislike it very much. It keeps crashing and I don't like their box that tells me they have a problem. Just reconnect. I've tried safari and chrome and don't like either one. For now I will stick with FF and hope they get the bugs out of ver 4.0.

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
I like Foxfire alot, It seems the more they upgrade the better it works for me. Probably the only program I can say has ever done that for me. I also use Chrome and IE to do different things. Also if you use Foxfire look into App: greasemonkey and http://userscripts.org/ it automates 1/2 of my web tasks. They also work in chrome. For IE I really like the http://www.ie7pro.com/ plug in. All of that is free I would never use anything that wasn't :)

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
I go back and forth between the big three, to see if any of the latest updates help. IE9 and FF4 just can't keep up with Chrome...that is in my rigs, with a SoCal dsl connection. I know it has something to do with the way they cache. So, Chrome gets the most use these days because I can see the speed difference. Here's to hoping the other guys catch up around here.

Sorry to HiJack this but it is related to the topic.... :P
If you want IE functionality in FF then try one of these,
IE Tab (FF 3.6+, 4+) (The original addon)
IE Tab 2 (FF 3.6+ & FF 4+)
I still use the older version of IE Tab 2 since I'm still using FF-3 but it works great on IE only sites like netfix.
Other Addons to consider:
BetterPrivacy
ShowIP
Flashblock
Mr Tech Toolkit
FlagFox
Download Manager Tweak
bug489729
All-In-One Sidebar
Favicon Picker 3
ImageTweak
QuickDrag
FoxyTunes
And a nice script for GreaseMonkey called BlackBox (Search Engine Anonymizer)

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
At work I use:
IE 8 - not by choice. but have to for some internal sites...hate it.
Firefox - as much as possible
At home I use:
Chromium - for my minimum Linux installs; does almost everything I need from a browser
Firefox - Only installed on the one Windows XP partition I have; use it when Chromium doesn't work with a web page or when playing some flash games as it is faster than Chromium.

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
I use Firefox for most things. It runs fast. Normally when I surf MSNBC for instance I just load all the articles I'm interested in in background tabs and read at leisure.
The only thing I use IE for is net purchases, not sure why but I don't trust FF quite as much for that.

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
Usually a FF guy...Has been for years...But all of sudden FF gives me errors, canīt show some regular visited pages properly and so on...This afternoon I canīt even log in to a danish HW page I read 3-4 times per week!!
Installed Opera 11.50...Oh, what a joy! Significant faster than even lastest FF 5.01..And I can read my pages again..

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
I have used FF for a long time but I am also getting a lot of errors and page shut downs. It is very annoying and I am going to revisit other browsers except Google. Opera may be the one I go with. I am running FF 6.03 Beta but I have had the same problem since 4.0.

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
Ah. Looks like I'll be sticking with 3.6.18 for the time being. Sorry to hear 5.x is having issues. Rushing to market never turns out well.........

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
Safari. Combined with mobileme, it keeps my bookmarks sync'd across all my macs. And that is a must-have for me. Yes, I tried xmarks with FF. Wow. Disaster. It worked fine at first. But a few weeks later, all my bookmarks got destroyed.

I am very pleased with opera so far. It has some cool features. You can share pics, music or whatever to any Opera browser on any platform...I donīt use all those advanced features. But I think itīs cool.

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
While browsing for a new browser, I ran across the Mozilla Nightly project. Downloaded and WOW, it's firefox on steroids. It is a test item but the papers I read say it is the Firefox of the future. It has versions for Intel, Mac and Linux. 32 and 64 bit.

Oh yes, it installs as a separate browser and will pick up everything from Firefox such as your shortcuts.

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
Well, since F$ told us all the negatives about Chrome, and has been extolling the virtues of FireFox (any relation to Fire$torm? :P ), I have just switched over to FF latest edition. Seems to be pretty nice so far...

Nope, no relation. Because if there was I'd have some serious cash and a very serious crunching farm to show for it....... :P
Admittedly, like any software, FF is not perfect. But the primary reason the world has a *cough* better IE *cough* or Chrome browser is because FF raised the bar. And raised it very high.

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
SeaMonkey most of the time, occasionally FF.

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
I only use IE8 if I have to because of all the script errors boxes that keep popping up and the "IE can not display ...." problems no matter what my setting are on. Try using IE9 but found most Websites are not setup for it yet. I use Safari 5.1 mostly I like the Top Site page that shows the site you use the most. However at times it has a hard time opening pages, says it can't find the server or the computer for that site is not responding. I also use Chrome but not as much.

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
This thread prompted me to try Chromium. I'm liking it, so far. I think I found one problem when trying to pay my Comcast bill. Other than that, no problems. I may switch permanently.

I would not lay my head on the block for it....But I seem to remember that I have read somewhere that Chrome for Linux is way more stable and fast than itĻs windows "brother"...

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
I was on FF for years, but it slowly had more and more issues and I think I was always so upgrade or modification nutty, I killed it myself. Have used Opera as my back up for the most part as the last 3 years I have mostly been a Chrome guy, but now it too has been having more and more issues, but I have not tried to tweak it or screw with it at all.
One I used to tool around on was Maxthon, but dont have it installed at the moment.

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
As more and more sites move to HTML5 and CSS3, there will be more and more issues with browsers that don't support those standards. Microsoft can't decide what they want to do. First they think XML will save the world and now they don't even support XSLT 2.0. Rumor has it that IE will get a compliance bump as Microsoft moves away from ASP.NET and towards jQuery/HTML5/CSS3.
That all being said... for work I have to support FF, IE, and Safari so I use all three but I prefer FF. IE9 is better, but still lags in HTML/CSS compliance. FF also has add-ons such as Firebug and add blocker and I can't imaging living without either.

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
@ F$ - is this a "smart" install in Windows, i.e. if I have FF 5 installed, can I just download FF 6 and it will update automatically, or will it leave a bunch of "crap" in the registry and all, in which case I should uninstall FF 5 first?

Nope. No worries. The installer is fully aware of previous installs and will uninstall the old version, install itself, import previous settings/plugins/add-ons and do a version check and alert you to any incompatibilities.
Edit: BTW, the FF6 interface is radically different in terms of menu layout & buttons then in versions 3~5. It will take a little getting used to. I installed it on Odin. The install was smooth as silk. Many of my add-ons already had updates for FF6. Since I was on Odin via VNC I couldn't tell if the browsing experience as any faster (as claimed) but it definitely wasn't slower.

Re: Which browser are you hooked on?
I am a Firefox fan. Unfortunately, I have to use IE8 for work which I don't like but that's life.
On a side note... Microsoft is going to move away from ASP.NET??? =)) That's priceless. At work we just bought a new Energy Management Software package from a company (that doesn't know what they are doing) which cost us $650,000. The reason I use IE8 at work is because this software won't talk to IE9 or Firefox or Safari which we were told it would. This EMS package uses ASP.NET. ROFLMAO It just keeps getting better all the time.
Please God, all I need is 30 more months...

That is HUGELY priceless...... Almost 3/4 of a MILLION SMACKERS for software that uses a now abandoned framework. Wonder how many Win-Devs are jumping out of Windows, literally & figuratively?

If they did that they wouldn't be able to hire all the overpriced "engineers" and would have to hire people who actually knew what they were doing. (Definition of engineer....professional procrastinator!):D:D:D
That of course would save the government money and you know they aren't going to do that.

A few years ago there was a push at the state level to start using Open Office and other GPL software. IIRC After about a year, the Feds shut the whole thing down. After all, the campaign contribution dollars MUST FLOW. (nod to Frank Herbert).

In my little corner of the Government that I work for that I like to call "Massive Dynamics", in years past we have had some intelligent and motivated employees that were allowed to develop applications that would help streamline and make some of the offices that they worked for more efficient. Once those employees moved on, there was no one to maintain the applications. It was decided that they would no longer allow that and that only outside companies would be allowed to create applications.
The other issue with individuals creating applications is that once you create something, you end up getting "married" to the thing which has nothing to do with keeping it running. Five years ago, I put together a database that allowed us to get off of the paper forms that we were using for audits in our department and it gave us the ability to search and create reports of site problems that we didn't have in the past. This database died a year ago because we have two individuals in our department that do not have an opposable thumb and refused to use it.
One major problem we had with the $650K POS that we purchased was that a particular Director that was in charge of this allowed the Software Company to write their own specifications. During the development meetings, which I attended, I brought up problems with this system that needed to be fixed or changed. I was told in so many words to STFU and mind my own business. Because of these issues, this department has wasted a ton of tax payers money and we didn't get a software package that comes anywhere close to what lower level management and others like myself who are analysis' wanted or needed to do our jobs.
I'll stop with that since I'm starting to get pissed off about the whole thing again. ~X(
