My problem is, except for my 4-core desktop [Phenom 9650 @2.3 GHz], my other cores belong to very over heating prone laptops and very slow/old single core machines. The laptops [one loaned out] have OK cores but tend to over heat to the point they shut themselves down. Even with external fans to help the air flow, they still overheat every day or two. I do not want to burn them out. The desktops are slow P4 or P3 type of machines that do very little towards my daily credits. So only my 4-core desktop is running, with several extra internal fans and an eight inch whole in the side of the case where a fan [now dead] was located. I run 64-bit Ubuntu on that quad, and keep it lower than 90% CPU usage to help with the heat and help me do my other work at the same time.

Lol, I'd say you've got some great work out of those old machines. The laptops can be cooled a bit by making sure the bottom has more space for air as the battery heats up a lot. I've heard that putting a small baking pan underneath acts as a good heat sink since baking pans conduct well.

Is the Nvidia giving more credits than ATI? Do you find more projects for Nvidia than ATI? I would like to find an up-to-date list of GPUs that would work, since my current list is well over a year old and most of the cards are no longer made.

Here is the team's gpu compatibility list on the forum Home page.

http://www.setiusa.us/content.php?119-BOINC-GPU-Compatibility-List

Until I get more good/powerful cores or a GPU card, I will be CPU-only crunching on this default desktop.

I am still hosting a 2-core team machine, which is under my desk, since I have free utilities in my handicapped housing. So if I do get any better machines, I do not have to worry about power. Heat, on the other hand, is a real problem over the past month. Sometimes I can barely keep the place cooler than 90 degrees [outside temps have been on-and-off records] even with an air conditioner going full blast. Can run more cores in the winter, since I can turn down the heat and let the desktops heat the place.

I hear you, it's hard to go all out in the summer. It's great to crunch, but you may want to pull back some. Health comes first.

-> Krackedpress: Very impressive crunching there!! Are you actually still running one of the original "SETI.USA Cluster pcīs"???

Yes, it is under my desk that I am sitting at right now.

Every so often I make sure the vents are clear of cat hair and I use canned air to clean off/out the CPU fan and heat sink, plus any dust bunnies in there that are hiding from my cat.

That XP64Box [dual core Pentium D @ 3.4GHz running XP Pro 64-bit] has been running "The Riesel Problem", FreeHal, and WUProp@home, for as long as I can remember. I do not even remember when I received it from one of the team members. A year ago? More? Having free electricity, except the yearly air conditioner fee, works out great when you have several desktops/laptops, 3 printers, router and hubs, plus all the normal electronics people have in a 1 bedroom place.

Right now that cluster machine has crunched 1,050,000 credits, with the cluster "user" at 1,865,000 credits. That machine does about 2,500 daily running that PG project. My 4-core does about 14,000 daily running PPS Sieve, so that dual core might do 5K-7K. I do not remember the password to switch projects, but it is running an account manager [Bam?] so if I did change projects, it would affect other cluster machines. I do not know if "the cluster people" are running Riesel for a reason [like a past contest]. If so, I would not want to be the person to switch projects on them.

I hear you, it's hard to go all out in the summer. It's great to crunch, but you may want to pull back some. Health comes first.

No baking pan, since it could hold the heat and reflect it back to the laptop. I had my laptops on 1" high foam blocks only under its feet pads and had a 6 inch fan blowing from back to front. The dual core DELL still kept being hot to the touch at the side of the touch pad square. The old HP single core AMD64 seemed to keep a cool case, but it kept crashing and I find the heat vents pumping out really hot air. That old HP is being borrowed by a friend who laptop died. The DELL is my Windows computer, for those times I need to run a Windows package, or testing out some newer free Windows software. I prefer Ubuntu now and that is what is running on my desktop that I am typing this on.

Being disabled [wheelchair most times when outside my apartment] and having meds that make heat and cold worse, keeping me in a proper temp range and air quality for my breathing issues [my cat as ashma as well], it can be a problem when it is too hot or too could outside to go to the places you need to be at. Actually I tell people that since I no longer am able to do much physical volunteering, my computer does it for me through BOINC.

Thanks for the reminder.
I have not run Cosmology@home for several months now.
So I just selected it to run.

I am at 13,020 credits. This is one of my lowest credit project.

Maybe I will run it till I break 20K or 30K?

What is the badge order, with numbers, for PG?

I have 20,000 and 2,000,000 badges for Sieve and the 10,000 for LLR projects. 12 projects badges total

305 304

Is there a badge for 200,000 for Sieve and 100,000 for LLR, or will I have to wait for the 1 million and 2 million marks?

I wonder if it is worth switching PG projects to push sole of the others past the 200,000 mark. It would be if there was a badge at that level.

321 Sieve is nearest to 200,000 with 190,323 credits, with TRP Sieve at about 125K.

That has been going on for years now. He has a split CPID, and can't fix it. So his credits keep bouncing between his two CPIDs.

There are badges available for every PG sub-project. The minimums needed for bronze are 10k for LLR and 20k for sieve. Sieve pays better, so the requirements for each badge are double the amount required for LLR.

I just had a vision of heat sink compound between a laptop and a frying pan. Of course, that much heat sink compound would probably cost as much as a cheap GPU.

If you were to put the laptop on top of an overturned pot, it would draw the heat away from the laptop. It would be especially effective if it was one of those pots with the really thick bottom. Of course, the pot would also probably cost as much as a cheap GPU.

With a little effort you can find a crunch-able nvidia card on ebay for $50 or less including shipping. Otherwise, you could find someone on the team that has one collecting dust and get it even cheaper. The 9800GT I was using, I paid a former teammate $35 for. Before that, I had a 9600GT given to me and even personally delivered to my mail box for free. (I hope Top Viking is doing better somewhere)

That link stated:
bronze: 20,000
silver: 200,000
gold: 1,000.000
amethyst: 2,000,000 ("pink" -- there is no sapphire)
ruby: 4,000,000 (red)

The big thing was I never saw silver or gold show up on my PG account page. I do not remembered seeing anything but Bronze and then the "pink" of amethyst.

So I had to ask the question about badges and their color.

by-the-by
This system seems to use the British English spelling for "colour" instead of the American English version of "color". I have been dealing with American English, British English, and Oxford English, for a support thread for LibreOffice [ International Site --> LibreOffice.org -or- North American Community DVD Project Site -->LibreOffice-NA.US ] and there was a big thing about using the proper spelling for the localized language. "localised" [B.E.] is correct spelling for this system and "localized" [O.E. and A.E.] for USA and "proper" "Queen's English".

The PG Sieve projects I need credits for to get the next level badge seems to no be listed on PG front page in the list of projects and how many WUs are available.

321 Sieve is at 190K, so I need 10K to go to the next stated level. But, it is not listed in PG project list that has [will have] any WUs.

TRP Sieve needs 75K. CW Sieve needs 88K.

Below is a clip of my PG project list image on August 7th 9am, Eastern time. It seems that the URL for "http://stats.free-dc.org/pgridtag.php?id=43364&theme=1" is not a proper URL. Even a ".jpeg" instead of ".jpg" is not a proper URL.

Not sure what you mean by it not being a proper url? And it generates a .png not a jpg.

Not sure what you mean by it not being a proper url? And it generates a .png not a jpg.

When I click on the "Insert Image" icon, then add the URL for an image that ends with ".jpeg", an error message pops up with a not-proper/not-valid URL. When I rename the image online to end with ".jpg", then the system will use it.

When I use the URL of "http://stats.free-dc.org/pgridtag.php?id=43364&theme=1" for my non-static PG project/credits list, I get the same not-valid URL message.

That image file works fine on my "www.lungstrom.com" page that shows it and the non-static "http://www.boincstats.com/signature/user_13245.gif" image for the total credits of each project I crunch.

PG -- - - - - -2,784,718 since July 11th, 2009
FreeHal - - - - 743,598 since July 10th, 2009
DNETC - - - - -334,064 since May 7th, 2010
. . . .
. . . .
Primaboin - - -220,000 since April 6th, 2011

Found out about all of my projects [except Seti@home] after I joined the SETI.USA team in the first days of July 2009 and went from 14K to over 5 million credits since then, mostly using CPU-only crunching, since my slow GT220 GPU card died after a few months. I crunch 27 projects on and off, not including the sub-project list like PG's PPS Sieve and 321 LLR.

I think that's a bug with the vbulletin software actually, as it's validating that it's a jpg/png/gif and isn't smart enough to realize that it's a generated png.

Just type it manually instead {img}http://stats.free-dc.org/pgridtag.php?id=43364&theme=1{/img} - replacing the {} with []. Like I've done above. If you don't want to use one of the themes you don't have to specify the theme= part as it defaults to 1.

Now I know how to get the images at their original sizes, instead of what the icon does with them.

I have done a lot of WUs for PG over the past two years. Hopefully 321 Sieve will get some more work so I can get the 200K badge. Right now I have clicked on the "Focus project" listed, plus the other projects if there is no WUs available. That project seem to be the one for the next contest, so I will see how it runs - again. I only have 47K after running 8.5K WUs for PPS LLR, so I need another 53K to get the next badge color.

Your project list shows Moo!.
I tried to run that but if always fails due to computational error and then sometimes it tells me I do not have the proper resources or system. I do not remember the exact wording for it though.

To me, though, the description of Moo! seems to be something like DNETC or some other project like that. But I could be wrong about that. So could you tell me what type of resources/system Moo! does need? Since your system[s] work, you should have the right one[s] for it.

Thanks for talking about Correlizer. I love to find new "Biomedical/Medical projects to test out and run. I just "installed" it and maybe run it till the PG contest on the 26th. I wonder how many credits I will get per WU and what the actual "average" crunch time it will take. The queue states about 40 minutes, but some PG WUs stated 200+ hours when it took well under 24 hours to crunch.

I currently have in my project list
[listed in high to low total credits order]
Poem
Rosetta
World Community Grid [medical sub-projects]
Docking
MalariaControl.net

If you have any other project names that deal with medical and biomedical crunching, I would like to know.

edit:
Just finished 2 WUs for Correlizer.
On my quad core AMD Phenom 9650 runing at 1.15GHz/2.3GHz, I did the WUs in about 28 minutes each instead of the queue's listed 40 minutes.

Just recently I saw Spinhenge@ stated in this thread, so I added it to my project list. I added Mersenne@ about the same time, but I do not remember what either one is really about [3 strokes can affect my memory that way].

QMC?
Lattice?
Leiden?

Do not know anything about them. Could someone briefly tell me/us [in non technical terms] what those projects are doing?

For Poem, Rosetta, Docking, and MalariaControl [plus some of the WCG projects], it is somewhat easy to understand what those project are trying to do. Rosetta successfully modeled a protein that could block reproduction of the Flu virus [if I remember correctly].

Some other projects are working on "Stuff" that might one day help fight cancer and Alzheimer's. Both of these have effected my family greatly. Several members died of cancer and my wife has been in a nursing facility for over 2 years with Alzheimer's. So I run these projects from time to time, though they do not give the best credits. They should give more credits so more people would crunch their WUs more.

Darn, the highest I am for any of my projects is 161, and the next is 337. Would be nice to be in the top 50 worldwide, but with 4-cores and no GPUs, that will be almost impossible. [99.444% ranking for all projects combined]

Well, for starters, you can look Here (http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=userteamcomb&team=SETI.USA) to see the list of users for our team. That second column (Project rank) is the BOINC Combined (overall, across all projects) ranking of each person. So, nobody on Team SETI.USA is even in the Worlds' Top-10.

It might be something nice for BOK to look at adding though, showing a list of aggregate Personal MM's for Team Members somewhere on the Team pages. So, adding up all the "Top-10" MM's, for example, for all current members and showing that for the team as a whole. And maybe even going so far as averaging that across the count of members. That'd show teams that are comprised of the strongest crunchers. Both overall, and as an average across all the team members. I've wondered about that myself. :)

Is that the 97th project that has reached 100K plus?

Zombie - please lest me know off the list what projects you are crunching. I have 26 projects in my list. I did not know there were that many projects. Last time I looked on the "generic" BOINC site, there were not near that many. I have only 6 that are at 100K or better. I have 6 that are less than 10K. The rest is between 10K and 50K.

I would love to see a list of all the projects that are semi-active to highly-active in having WUs for crunching. I would like to see what projects that are out there that could be something that a person, like me or any new BOINC cruncher, could use to help them find all the possible projects to crunch. Most of the projects in my list are ones that I have heard about on this [and the older] list. I crunched SETI@ as my only one till I was invited to join the team. Then I heard of other projects that were good to crunch. So I started to crunch PG and so many other higher credit projects, and the medical and science projects that I want to crunch.

SO, if there was a complete [or as complete as possible] list of the projects out there so people can see them and make their own choices on what projects they would like to crunch.

Any Link to such a list? Anyone want to create one? Let me know - please.

Is that the 97th project that has reached 100K plus?

Yep.

Zombie - please lest me know off the list what projects you are crunching. I have 26 projects in my list. I did not know there were that many projects.

The best place to look is here:

http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=userbycpid&cpid=0a7b8378436fdcaef549d87e35f26480

I am #1 with most projects with credits, so that is a pretty good list of "all" projects. Of course it doesn't show projects that never exported stats, or projects I never worked on (not many!). Look at the today and yesterday columns. That is where I am currently crunching. Ignore the RAC column, because dead projects don't decay their RAC.

Zombies page gets it very close, but better to go to this one (sorted by today) - http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=projmain&sort=today (you can easily see some other projects which have not exported today but have entries for yesterday or 2 days ago so those are active too )

This one attempts to get the status from each project but given that it uses an rpc call which is inconsistent at best it's not totally accurate - http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=boinc_status

I would like to make a list somewhere that has all the projects out there to be crunched. On the old web site there use to be a list of projects with a notice if the system was active or not. Also there was a list of projects that the membership was crunching, or something like that.

Here is the list of projects I got from Zombie's list.
Is there any projects other there NOT on this list that should be added?

I wish I had this reply before I made the reply with the big list.

Still, we should to have one master list of projects that the team crunched and projects new BOINC crunchers could used to pick and choose project from for their own crunching needs.

We did have a small list on the old web site. Do we have one on this site somewhere?

Man, that's pretty sweet. How do you go about this MM project? Do you say, pick a #, like 100K, or 10Mil, and say, "I want to be #1 in that category," or is it more like you just take the MMs as they come, whenever it's best to crunch project X?

I started with 10k in all the projects possible. Then 50k, then 100k. I'm now making sure I have 250k in all active projects. I still have a few new projects I am working on to get there. But then the hard part is holding them. You have to jump on each new project immediately. Or you could miss out if a projects shuts down quickly. And if someone else gets the MM, you can never make that up.

But for the big ones, they are just due to GPUs. Not really trying to compete there. Just helping the team in over all points.

Crap, I must have been looking at NFS or SZDG. But Free-DC is reading for Leiden 268 days now. ESL is accelerating it seems. But ahh what ever, I know it is not a project the team is too worried about. But SZDG, that is a project we will slip a spot (22 days I believe), but I have noticed due to the very low credit, it is not really part of the team goals.

Will with a quad and no GPU, this is my current standings:

12,484 out of 2,242,574 for total credits [best was 12,393 at 2011-08-06]
and
11,819 out of 2,242,574 for RAC.

I use to be around 6,700 for RAC, but I am not crunching the high credit projects currently. When I crunch PG's PPS-Sieve, then I get the better RAC - about 16K to 19K daily credits with this quad. I have over 2M for that PG project, with about 800K total for the rest of PG's projects for the 25 months of crunching PG on/off.

BOINCstats states than I am at 97.885% for the team for total credits. My goal it to reach 98.5% to 99%, but with only a quad, it will not happen.

KP - first, have you considered crunching DiRT with that CPU? It will pony up more than double credits for that quad core of yours than anything else right now. Think "Aqua" on its best day type credits!
Second, do you have a PCI-e slot free? I could send you an ATI GPU that should be freed up when I do some parts swapping in a few weeks. I do not need to horde the credits; I like to share the RAC, as long as the TEAM goes up! :D Anyway, shoot me a PM me if interested.

Sir?
It has been a few years since anyone called me Sir.

In July '09, I was crunching SETI, and nothing more. Then I was invited to join this team. Was at 14K then. Little over 2 years and I am over 5 million over that. People suggested projects like PG and so many others that gave better credits than SETI did.

I now run a mix of 29 projects plus all those sub-projects within them. Right now, PG PPS-Sieve gives me the best daily credits, up to 18K. If DiRT gives me more, then that would be nice.

Right now I have run the DiRT units for about 13.5 hours with 80% completed and 3.5 hours to go.

3 DiRT and 1 RNA crunching. Keeping both in the queue, for now.

DiRT's site shows 18,600 credits; 6 WUs at 3K each, and one for 600. The 600 credit ones are actually what are now in my queue [hybrid2 type] not the 3K ones.

ntlm_mixalpha --> 3000 credits
ntlm_hybrid2 --> 600 credits - 4 hour runtime maybe [1hr @ 27% completed]

My first 6 was the better credits. I do not know if the other type is worth it.

Broke 50K for DiRT after 5 days.

BOINC manager and my account page at DiRT shows 54,600, but the stat sites still have 18,600 shown. For 2 days I had all my work "pending", so my daily numbers tanked since I was running DiRT as my only project [besides WUProp and FreeHall].

I am running 4 cores of an AMD Phenom 9650 @ 2.30 GHz. The past 2 days DiRT was the only project running. I run BOINC at 90% CPU usage, so my processors will not be running 100% 24/7/365, since I cannot afford to replace it.

Could anyone tell my if running DiRT WU in about 4 hours +/- is a good number? I wonder about that with many of my projects.

I am at 5,115,795.01 credits [99.444% total credit rating] for almost all CPU work. Where I got the .01 credit is unknown to me.

I just went and checked your pc...from what I can tell that about the best place to be rigth now!!! You should be keeping a steady pace at 10-13.000 per day on that speed...Not to shabby on CPU!!

I hope to be able to not have 2 or 3 days of no reported credits like the past 2 days. It kills my daily RAC numbers. Actually PG PPS-Sieve can give me up to 18K per day, but is usually is 10K to 15K daily. It is nice that the PG Challenge is PPS-Sieve, since it is the current best for CPU credits. I do not know if it is GPU as well.

Tomorrow we all should look at doing the PG contest

It is PPS-Sieve, which was where I made 2M of my 2.8M PG credits

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that, vaio! Good luck with job hunting!

I hate job hunting. Now that I was forced to retire after my back injury and then 3 strokes, I no longer can work so no longer have the stress about keeping a job in this job market. 30%+/- are unemployed in my area. Most jobs available are in fast food or retail, and someone with college education and good work experience is over qualified to work there. Had to do that for a few years, before I got the work at a computer center and then a school district. This area use to be a big factory county, but almost every one is now closed. Only Retail work is really increasing in this area. All the good paying jobs are reducing staff or going out of the area completely. Pretty bad for the county seat.

It's not an MM; it's an MMM, a MegaloManiacMilestone.

Good Job!

Not sure if this is any sore of "official" mile stone, but I just passed 1M *total* between all my projects today :) PG will hit 1M pretty soon by itself :)

My Dell XPS 1730 laptop just blew it's dual 8800M video card.. it's under warranty, but cant be fixed till next week.. so I'll lose all the WUs it had pending :(
